The Media’S Influence On Disordered Eating And Body Dysmorphia In Males And Females, Alexis Kotanidis, Jamie Vitrano
Molloy Multidisciplinary Undergraduate Research Conference
The media typically refers to various means of communication that reach or influence people widely. This includes television, radio, newspapers, magazines, social media platforms, websites, podcasts, and more. Essentially, it has many ways through which information is transmitted to a large audience. The media plays a significant role in shaping public opinion, especially with regard to disordered eating and body dysmorphia in both men and women. Disordered eating refers to a wide range of irregular eating behaviors that may or may not meet the criteria for a specific eating disorder diagnosis such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, or binge-eating disorder. …

The Internet is a double-edged sword because it provides easy access to information of both good and bad intentions. Censorship justifications under whoever deems something misinformation, provide little oversight on being a neutral public forum. For instance, the influence of elections by not covering a story and censoring opposing views does not promote the notion of being a neutral public forum. Artificial intelligence being applied to many technological applications have fueled the censorship machine. In some instances, artificial intelligence can generate stories to media sites (i.e., ChatGPT) with no verification of the details. From science fiction to science reality, taking …

Behind Derogatory Migrants' Terms For Venezuelan Migrants: Xenophobia And Sexism Identification With Twitter Data And Nlp, Joseph Martínez, Melissa Miller-Felton, Jose Padilla, Erika Frydenlund
Modeling, Simulation and Visualization Student Capstone Conference
The sudden arrival of many migrants can present new challenges for host communities and create negative attitudes that reflect that tension. In the case of Colombia, with the influx of over 2.5 million Venezuelan migrants, such tensions arose. Our research objective is to investigate how those sentiments arise in social media. We focused on monitoring derogatory terms for Venezuelans, specifically veneco and veneca. Using a dataset of 5.7 million tweets from Colombian users between 2015 and 2021, we determined the proportion of tweets containing those terms. We observed a high prevalence of xenophobic and defamatory language correlated with the …

Appearance-Related Messages In Youtube Workout Videos: A Content Analysis, Ha Gyoung Chung, Caroline Joo, Jennifer A. Harriger
Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium
Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, many individuals exercised in gyms or attended in-person workout classes. As the pandemic led to shutdowns, many turned to online workout programs to maintain activity levels. The purpose of this analysis was to examine the prevalence of appearance-related messages in 297 popular workout videos on YouTube. Among these videos, 64.3% of the main instructors were women. Instructors were likely to promote beauty ideals, as 100% of the instructors had features consistent with cultural beauty ideals (e.g., clear skin, white teeth, straight hair) and 90.3% had thin or athletic bodies. Additionally, 68.4% of the videos were …

The Development Of Conspiracy Theories During The Freedom Convoy, Srinjoyee Chakraborty Ms.
Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference
Conspiracy theories have been prevalent throughout history, especially during periods of fear and uncertainty as people build a narrative against political elites and blame misdeeds on their malignant nature. A case study of this phenomenon can be examined in the Canadian Freedom Convoy. The Freedom Convoy began in early 2022 as a protest against COVID-19 mandates, attracting significant political attention as an unprecedented event that eventually forced Trudeau to invoke the Emergencies Act. As political tensions and opinions arose on social media, conspiracist groups began to develop conspiracy theories about the Truck Convoy in order to attract attention from potential …

The #Tumindig social movement brought upon a collective call for change under the utilization of Philippine Twitter in standing up against the country’s social issues. Since this is a relatively new topic, there is a lack of studies regarding the #Tumindig social movement. The present study seeks to analyze and understand the different factors that greatly influence the social movement which focuses on the motivation, discourse, and impact through using the Virtual Collective Consciousness framework by Neil M. Alperstein. With these—the motivation, discourse, and impact—behind the #Tumindig may provide insights regarding how exposure to social movements online, gain support and …

The study sought to explicate the influence of female Instagram users' attributes on their dependence on aesthetic enhancers or filters. There are minimal studies involving the actual grounds of beauty enhancement usage, as most studies are concentrated on its effects. Therefore, this study aims to determine the factors that affect a late adolescent female’s tendency to use beauty filters on Instagram, what motivates them in using these beauty enhancers, and the effects of Instagram usage on the desire to enhance their physical appearance. With that said, it is hypothesized that the intensity of social media use, social media awareness, the …
The Age Of Advanced Communication: Impacts Of Superpower Disinformation On U.S. Public Diplomacy, Kaitlyn Elizabeth Early
The Age Of Advanced Communication: Impacts Of Superpower Disinformation On U.S. Public Diplomacy, Kaitlyn Elizabeth Early
Helm's School of Government Conference - American Revival: Citizenship & Virtue
The age of advanced technology is among us. Beginning in the 1430s with the invention of the printing press, innovations such as the telegraph, radio, television, and the internet have changed the channels of communication, foreign and domestic, forever. Much of the previous research dominating the field of United States foreign policy focuses upon the age of disinformation. Some research pieces surrounding the impacts of communication tools on public diplomacy are outdated as technology is constantly changing. Rather, an up-to-date, comprehensive study of the shifting public diplomacy and media strategies due to these advanced communication tools would paint a thorough …

Mitacs Female Ngos Use Of Twitter During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Riley M. Mclaughlin
Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference
This study analyzes how female-run NGOs have used Twitter during the COVID-19 pandemic. It assesses the themes they discuss, as well as the functions of the tweets collected. Using a framework by Lovejoy and Saxton (2012), tweets were coded based on whether or not they had the purpose of spreading information, building community, or encouraging action. Data from five different organizations was collected for analysis. Researchers pose questions about how organizations discuss women's concerns during the pandemics, which concerns they discuss most often, and how they use the three functions outlined above. Preliminary findings are discussed, however further analysis of …

Thinking Matters Symposium
This study investigated the impacts of social media use, specifically Facebook and Instagram, on emerging adults’ perceptions of self-esteem and body satisfaction. Limited research exists regarding the influence of demographic variables, such as gender, race, and geographic location, on the relationship between social media use and negative outcome variables. The researchers utilized a cross-sectional survey design with a target population of University of Southern Maine students. Researchers hypothesize that emerging adults who spend more time on Facebook and Instagram are more likely to have lower self-esteem and body satisfaction than emerging adults who spend little to no time on Facebook …

Tackling ‘Bias’ And Fake Coverage In The Indian Media, Buroshiva Dasgupta
First Global News Literacy Conference
In India, there are a vast number of vernacular newspapers and TV channels in addition to the standard English newspapers and channels. Their strategies for covering news differ from place to place, language to language as well as their political or business “affiliations”. Unfortunately, in recent times most of the media platforms in India have moved away from their ‘objective’ standpoint. To understand or decipher fact from fiction the first method would be to go for a comparative study of the news items and then try to source out their ‘affiliations’ ! both political and business – to place the …

Says Who? Challenges Of Teaching News Literacy In A Culture Of Secrecy, Kanchan Kaur
First Global News Literacy Conference
India might be the world’s largest democracy, but it is still fraught with challenges that plague the underdeveloped world. India is quickly moving to a digital democracy—the ability to receive information in almost real time through mass media and to make one’s voice heard through social media (1) --with complex consequences. One of them has to do with a post-fact environment and non-state actors who try to influence public opinion to serve their own ends. Social media, especially WhatsApp, serves their purposes well, for instead of exposing people to diverse views, it mainly creates an echo chamber (2). Making matters …

Overcoming The Dark Side: Seeing Through The Spin Of Public Relations In The News, Samantha Stanley
First Global News Literacy Conference
In its current state, news literacy curriculum covers all the information types that consumers will see when they read, watch, listen to, and interact with news content. While current lessons do explain how press releases distribute information in the “promotion / publicity” neighborhood, there is much more nuance to the practice of PR that impacts information people read as ‘news’. In today’s climate of political spin cycles, it is more important than ever for news consumers to understand what public relations is and how its strategies influence news content. Because the practice of public relations is so often misunderstood and …

Copyright, Fair Use, And Social Media Instruction For Undergraduates, Elizabeth Kelly
Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy
Undergraduate students are increasingly expected to navigate the world of posting both original and reused content to social media. But how do students know what they should and shouldn’t share on social media? And how does this change depending on whether the student is using a personal account versus one made for school or for a job? An understanding of the ethics and legality of sharing copyrighted content is essential to the third frame, “Information Has Value,” of the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education. Much of student use of copyrighted materials for coursework is covered by Educational …

Advocacy Campaign For Women's Reproductive Health And Access On Social Media, Rachel Crist, Jules Montes, Lauren Frank
Student Research Symposium
Advocacy organizations increasingly rely on social media (e.g. Twitter hashtags) to foster issue awareness. Social media platforms can be promising communication channels to reach diverse audiences; however, it is unclear how effective these campaigns are at reaching audience members whose views do not align with the campaign. Using diffusion of innovations as a theoretical framework, this study examines the #BirthControlHelpedMe campaign to better understand the response to an advocacy campaign promoted via Twitter. Focus groups were conducted separately for men and women. The moderator led participants in a semi-structured discussion of perceptions of birth control. Participants were then shown example …

The Motivation To “Like”: Do “Likes” Cause Conformity On Social Media?, Charles D. Dolph, Daniel J. Case Jr., Devin M. Welsh
The Research and Scholarship Symposium (2013-2019)
Social media has become the norm in westernized culture in many households. Many companies ranging from small to large organizations have employed multiple forms of social media in order to promote their business. Some companies are inclined to buy “likes” from other businesses in order that their product may seem more appealing to viewers online. The question that this study aimed to address whether participants were more likely to “like” a picture if the picture has more associated “likes”, rather than if it is a good picture as deemed by a professional photographer. This would follow the traditional conformity principles, …

Twitter, the most popular micro-blogging site, having over 500 million registered users as of 2012 and creating over 340 million tweets per day, has caught the attention of socio-geographic researchers. With its availability from mobile phones, Twitter allows users to send messages with their geographic coordinates. Thus, with respect to the huge quantity and large diversity of crowds publishing tweets, massive valuable geosocial knowledge can be extracted, which can provide important implications for various applications, such as human geography, urban science, location-based services, targeted advertising, content delivery networks, and social media research. This study aims to uncover human behavior patterns, …

This study investigated the effect of exposure to Facebook relationships on mood through passive encounters with three different Facebook profiles. Undergraduate students were administered a Positive and Negative Affect Scale and then completed three conditions in a random order: looking at their own Facebook profile, the Facebook profile of a close friend, and the Facebook profile of a distant acquaintance. They took a PANAS mood scale after each condition to find the influence of each relationship on mood. Personality trait scores (as measured by the International Personality Item Pool) were examined in relationship to changes in mood.

Getting In Bed With Our Customers: How Did We Embed Our Services To Push The Library Mission At Vaal University Of Technology, Ntombizodwa G. Thomas
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
Emerging trends in technology have changed the academic libraries’ landscape and services. These changes will forever impact and influence how libraries conduct their businesses to satisfy the most important people in their lives; that is; the customers we serve, especially in academic libraries.
In the 21st century waiting for customers to come to the libraries to is no longer working and is also no longer relevant. Getting out of our comfort zones, getting close to our clients, invading their space when they least expect and getting in bed with those customers to satisfy their information needs is now a …
