In spring 2015, liaison librarians at the University of Vermont’s Bailey/Howe and Dana Medical Libraries migrated their online research guides to the LibGuides v2 platform, moving more than 600 guides to a new site. In 2013, the White House Office of Science & Technology Policy (OSTP) issued a memorandum that requires all granting agencies to develop a plan to make both the data and published articles of federally-funded research publicly available, free of charge. Jeff's interest in learning more about bookbinding came about because of a recent donation from the David Richardson estate to the Special Collections Dept. Jeff knew there were some interesting examples of bindings in this donated collection, and he wanted to better understand what we now owned. In this presentation, he showed examples of books from the “hand-press era,” i.e. from the beginning of printing in the 15th century to 1800, when printing presses were powered by hand.

Since 2001, Michele (a library circulation supervisor in her day job) has conducted a summer breeding-bird survey of Grasshopper Sparrows at Camp Johnson in Colchester, VT. Named Grasshopper Sparrows because their breeding call sounds like a grasshopper, this little brown bird is endemic to certain types of scrubby grasslands which are becoming more scarce in the Northeast. The Grasshopper Sparrow is also declining and the species is not on the list of Vermont Endangered Birds. The poster presents the process undertaken to create a DVD documentary of still and moving images, reflecting the history of a small community from the volunteer creator perspective. Sample visual elements include illustrations the DVD menu of five selections; footage of three moving image clips and two still photo collections.

The challenges, opportunities, rewards are presented, as well as a section on practical ‘how-we-done-it’ and ‘how we-mighta-done-it-differently’. For example, one of the biggest challenges was identifying home movies that included town events, in addition in being in good shape for digital transfer.

Objectives: To evaluate the perceived benefits of access to library-licensed mobile clinical decision support resources in clinical medical education.

Methods: A cohort of medical students was surveyed midway through the clerkship year. Dana Medical Library offered instruction on clinical mobile resources at the beginning of the year. Students were offered a subject guide and assistance with authentication. Assessment methods included web analytics measuring the utility of the subject guide and a survey. Survey questions gathered data on access to mobile devices, relevance of instruction, use of library-licensed mobile resources, and benefits and barriers to their use in the clinical setting. …

This poster represents my ongoing study of clinical questions asked at a residents' educational conference and the resources used to answer them. Most of these queries can be answered using medical knowledge resources available through the library. After nine years of collecting data, these questions and their answering resources were longitudinally analyzed.

This poster incorporates updates to data presented at MLA '10. In addition, it was an accepted poster at the recent 2013 international federated conference, OneHEALTH: Information In An Interdependent World, the 2013 Annual Meeting and Exhibition of the Medical Library Association (MLA '13), held in Boston, MA.

After implementing the discovery tool Primo (eventually renamed CATQuest), the UVM Libraries conducted a usability test to understand how our users approach using this tool without instruction, to discover patterns in searching behavior, and to uncover how compatible Primo is with user search behavior. This presentation will demonstrate the design and implementation of the usability study, as well as reveal some surprising results.

This project is a work-in-progress exploring collaborative preservation opportunities for libraries and current digital-content creators in Vermont. Legacy retention partnerships are waning with the print industry, and new independent creators are discovering the need to self-archive, develop new alliances, or risk eventual loss of their work. The Dana Medical Library mounted a webpage of health-sciences information sources for mobile apps in early 2011, followed later by a lending system for iPads. We offered workshops on "Mobile Apps" and promoted them at orientations, usually including a few words while teaching other topics.

We will review the successes and challenges of introducing this new technology, and offer some perspectives for the future in managing mobile apps.

The Wilbur Collection of Vermontiana contains hundreds of unique broadsides that document community activities and concerns from the 1770s through the 20th century. Until recently, only a very small percentage of the rich broadside collection was catalogued. Two years ago, Special Collections and the Resource Description and Analysis departments joined forces to make all of the Vermont broadsides accessible to researchers. Many academic libraries now routinely share information about their collections, programs, and services through these modalities, but how do we evaluate our efforts, in a medium that remains inherently experimental? This paper will look at both qualitative and quantitative evaluative measures that can be used together to assess the efficacy of social media marketing campaigns and will provide conference-goers with sample rubrics for assessing the use of Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube.

Salary surveys are an important tool for the library community and the administrators and boards responsible for the oversight of libraries. However, such assessments must be constructed and analyzed with great care. The Vermont Library Association Personnel Committee has conducted three salary surveys over the past several years, one focusing on academic libraries and two on public libraries. Significant issues have included confidentiality, participation rate, definitions, length and difficulty of questions, collection of data, and representativeness. Suggestions and lessons learned will be shared.

The Long Trail Collection, created by the University of Vermont Center for Digital Initiatives (CDI), is a collection of over 900 digitized lantern slides that document the creation of the nation’s oldest long-distance hiking trail. The presentation detailed the effort to create a mobile iPhone interface for the collection, allowing Long Trail hikers the ability to “take the collection with them” as they hiked. Challenges to creating a mobile presence as well as implications for other digital collections were also discussed.
