Information – Power To The People: Students And Librarians Dialoguing About Power, Social Justice, And Information, Mandy J. Swygart-Hobaugh M.L.S., Ph.D.

This chapter provides a case study of teaching an Honors Freshman Seminar at Georgia State University. The pedagogical goals for this course were: (1) to push the boundaries of the Association of College & Research Libraries (ACRL) Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education; (2) to engage students in applying critical-theoretical and social-justice frameworks to the course topics via dialogic, problem-posing learning; and (3) to expand and challenge the students’ perceptions of librarianship by elucidating the role librarians play in social justice and democratizing efforts related to information access. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to discuss the nature of the project management concept of resource leveling, particularly how it can be utilized for grant-funded mass digitization projects where time, cost and available resources – the elements of the project scope triangle – are in tension with each other to define the scope and quality of a project.

Libraries are using Twitter for a variety of communication purposes. Some libraries use it to listen to what their customers are saying about the library. This annotated bibliography provides a selection of resources that delve into the topic of bias as it relates to library services and collections in the 21stcentury. Globalization, corporate hegemony, Internet search engines, and technologies such as virtual reference contribute to an environment where the librarian must be aware of personal and external biases in order to make appropriate decisions. The resources presented touch on ethics, neutrality, social responsibility, advocacy, selection and censorship. This broad spectrum of bias related topics will be especially helpful for librarians providing reference services and collection development in today’s library information environment.
