Some Factors That Effect [Sic] Statistical Power In Ancova: A Population Study, Valerie Maria Tvedt
Some Factors That Effect [Sic] Statistical Power In Ancova: A Population Study, Valerie Maria Tvedt
Theses Digitization Project
A study into the factors that affect power in an analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) design were examined. Four factors - sample size, significance level, dependent variable-covariate correlations and homogeneity of regression - were varied in a population study. Results indicate that power increased when the dependent variable-covariate correlations increased and when sample size increased. Power also increased when a less stringent alpha level was used. Homogeneity of regression did not effect power. Implications and recommendations for the applied researcher are discussed.

The Effectiveness Of Play Therapy In A School-Based Counseling Program, Aimee Marie O'Keefe
Theses Digitization Project
This research project attempted to determine whether play therapy used to treat elementary and junior high school children in a School-Based Counseling program is effective. There is conflicting evidence in the literature as to the effectiveness of therapy with children, especially play therapy. This project used a qualitative design to evaluate play therapy used in a School-Base Counseling program (SBC). Randomly selected case files from the 1998-99 academic year were analyzed using questions considering demographic information for each child, the reason the child was referred to the program, the intervention used by the therapist, and the outcomes of therapy. The …

Determining How Stressors Effect The Onset Of Substance Abuse In Runaways, Christopher Parrish Rosselli
Determining How Stressors Effect The Onset Of Substance Abuse In Runaways, Christopher Parrish Rosselli
Theses Digitization Project
In America, it is estimated that between 500,000 and two million children run away each year. A majority of these runaways become involved with illegal substance abuse. This study questions whether children experience substance abuse prior to their running away or if their substance abuse is an attempt to cope with the new stressors created by street life. Data collection will include having 50 volunteers complete a questionnaire, with consideration of race and gender. The findings suggested that no relationship exist between runaways engaging in drug use and the amount of stress experienced at home or during the runaway.

Grice's Implicature And Toulmin's Warrants: Their Arresting Similarities And The Resulting Implications For The Understanding Of Meaning In Communication, Caroline Paige Krejci
Theses Digitization Project
Paul Grice's conversational implicature is a widely studied and commonly accepted theory in the field of linguistics, and Stephen Toulmin's model of argument is perhaps even more widely studied and accepted in the field of argument. I was struck by the great similarities between the two theories, particularly the leap of logic both are dependent upon, and surprised by the fact that it didn't seem that anyone had explored the similarities. In this thesis, I explore the similarities of the processes, of Grices's implicature and Toulmin's model of argument, and how looking at the two together increases the understanding of …

Military Retirement Satisfaction And Adjustment: The Effects Of Planning, Having Transferable Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities, And Having Identified With, And Been Committed To, The Navy On A Sample Of Retired Naval Officers, Peter Edward Spiegel
Theses Digitization Project
We examined military retirement. We sought to determine if preretirement planning, having knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) that are readily transferable, and being committed to, and/or identifying with, the Navy would affect the retirement satisfaction and adjustment of a retired naval officers sample. Results indicated that both planning and transferability influenced retirement satisfaction and adjustment, while organizational commitment and identification did not. Implications of our findings, as well as a brief overview of some general retirement issues are included.
