Information Literacy Assessment For Instruction And Improvement And Demonstration Of Library Value: Comparing Locally-Grown And Commercially Created Tests, Kathy E. Clarke, Carolyn Radcliff
Libraries
This paper describes two types of fixed-choice information literacy tests, one locally created and one nationally developed. The Madison Research Essentials Skills Test (MREST) is part of a tutorial-test model for first-year library instruction at James Madison University. Students must pass the test before they can move to sophomore status. This testing process relies on a collaborative model between JMU Libraries, the General Education program, and the Center for Assessment Research Studies (CARS). On the national level, the recently-created Threshold Achievement Test for Information Literacy (TATIL) is based on the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy and in four test modules …

Adapting The Framework At Jmu Libraries And Educational Technologies: A Collaboration Between Instructional Designers And Librarian Liaisons, Liz Thompson, Malia Willey, Elaine Kaye
Libraries
At James Madison University (JMU), a small team of faculty members in Libraries & Educational Technologies (LET) collaborated to develop new information literacy student learning outcomes based on the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education. The Information Literacy Task Force was tasked with unifying the conversation around information literacy within LET and providing student learning outcomes that educators will be able to adapt into content, activities, and assessments. Instructional designers and librarians worked together to explore the framework in the diverse context of the JMU community. We will share how the unique collaboration between instructional designers and librarians …

The college campus is a complex ecosystem of services and resources. Academic library outreach efforts offered in partnership with Student Affairs units can support the whole student as they navigate this ecosystem. This presentation offers one librarian's experience collaborating with Student Affairs units such as health, counseling, and recreation centers. A mental model for this work that draws on the metaphor of organic gardening helps frame the remarks and reflections.

Fashion As Property In Traditional Culture: A Maasai Case Study, Elizabeth Oyange-Ngando
Fashion As Property In Traditional Culture: A Maasai Case Study, Elizabeth Oyange-Ngando
Libraries
Protection of traditional knowledge and cultural expressions of a community is a thorny issue of which an all-encompassing definition is evasive.1 Societal exposure to a smorgasbord of traditional culture expressed through fashion trends into the mainstream may have inadvertently given rise to a sense of entitlement for such use. A misconception that such cultural property belongs to no individual as such, but is in the interests of those with access to it and thus free to use is unfortunate, even when the initial intention of exposing such culture was for its appreciation, safeguarding and preservation.
Certain African countries have proposed …
Mindfulness Practices For Information Literacy: Encouraging Reflective Engagement With Information, Liz Chenevey
Mindfulness Practices For Information Literacy: Encouraging Reflective Engagement With Information, Liz Chenevey
Libraries
Information Literacy is an important skill required by the APA of undergraduate psychology students. The Association of College & Research Libraries partially defines Information Literacy as the set of integrated abilities encompassing the reflective discovery of information. These abilities are most often seen in research, yet many undergraduate students see research projects as a frustrating burden and another stressor in their busy semesters. Librarians can help them navigate the changing information landscape and the research process as whole, but how much reflection and synthesis do students take part in? Mindfulness practices are increasing in popularity in higher education as they …

Effective Use Of “Guest Lecturers” In Online Instruction, Emily Rogers, Howard S. Carrier
Libraries
“Guest lecturers” can share insight and experiences, especially in classes that support professional programs, but how can they be best utilized in the online teaching environment? In presenting this paper at DLA 2018, the authors seek to discuss this question, drawing upon their recent, empirical research investigating the role of guest lecturers in online library science classes.

How Undergraduate Students' Perceptions Of Academic Librarians Can Inform Innovative Teaching, Jody C. Fagan, Hillary Ostermiller, Elizabeth Price, Lara Sapp
Libraries
Student perceptions of teachers can influence the success of instruction, and library instruction is no exception. Understanding the mindset of students can help academic librarians prepare for in-person and asynchronous classes and create instructional materials. By anticipating students’ impressions, librarians can challenge false assumptions and improve interactions. This poster highlights findings from a large study of how undergraduate students at one institution perceive academic librarians.
The Discoverability Of Award-Winning Undergraduate Research In History: Implications For Academic Libraries, Jody C. Fagan, Malia Willey
The Discoverability Of Award-Winning Undergraduate Research In History: Implications For Academic Libraries, Jody C. Fagan, Malia Willey
Libraries
Making scholarly information visible to web search engines is an ongoing challenge, and undergraduate research is no exception. Using a sample of award-winning undergraduate history papers and journals, the authors searched Google, Google Scholar, Microsoft Academic, and the authors’ institutional repository to gauge the difficulty of locating these works. Given that many of these works were not easily found, results suggest that libraries and their institutions could be doing more to increase the discoverability of undergraduate research. Based on the success stories observed in this study, we offer strategies to libraries and librarians for increasing the visibility of undergraduate student …

How Accessible Are The Libraries?, K.T. L. Vaughan
Libraries
JMU's Carrier Library may be one of the most popular study and hangout spots on campus, but how accessible is it? How can we work to improve Carrier's accessibility? We developed and tested an accessibility audit instrument to identify areas of strength and need. This session will present findings and talk about how the libraries are working to redefine access and accessibility in the physical environment. Your voice is welcome to help co-construct an idea of library as third place that is accessible and inclusive for all students, faculty, and staff.

Lcsh In The Southern Levant, Steven W. Holloway
Lcsh In The Southern Levant, Steven W. Holloway
Libraries
The article demonstrates how Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) geographic headings for the Southern Levant mirror the political investment of Congress and the American public in Middle East politics over the last thirty years. The headings’ evolution as well as Library of Congress rules governing their creation is charted in detail. These LCSH headings contrast markedly with those established in other national libraries (BnF, DNB) and independent value vocabularies (TGN, GeoNames), and global opinion regarding the legal status of the occupied territories. I sketch the historical context of their formation and offer suggestions as to how libraries can “decolonize” …
