Recommendations To Internal Auditors Regarding The Auditing And Attestation Of Mathematical Programming Models, Jose Rincón, Greg Akai, Daryl Ono

LMU Librarian Publications & Presentations

Mathematical programming planning models increase operational efficiency and minimize operating costs, but the underlying mathematics generally is complex. Combinatorial optimization is technically sophisticated which requires a strong quantitative background to successfully implement. Most internal auditors will not have the technical training to critically assess the underlying mathematics of mathematical programming planning models, but the internal auditor can still provide insight and attestation which can increase the efficiency of mathematical programming planning models.

A Model Research Methods Training Program: Implications For The Curriculum, Kristine R. Brancolini, Marie Kennedy

LMU Librarian Publications & Presentations

The majority of academic librarians in the US are employed by their insti-tutions either on tenure track, similar to teaching faculty, or they have some form of status that requires them to conduct and share the results of research to receive annual salary increases, achieve tenure or continuing employment, and/or gain promotion or enhanced ranking. Research published during the past two decades, however, confirms that most academic librarians enter the profession perceiving themselves to be unprepared for conducting research. To address deficiencies and alleviate anxieties surrounding research, the authors created a continuing educa-tion program for novice academic librarian researchers, the …

LMU Librarian Publications & Presentations

In 2017, the William H. Hannon Library at Loyola Marymount University (LMU) used a locally hosted license of CONTENTdm for managing its digital collections. Then LMU was informed that CONTENTdm would no longer be supporting locally hosted instances of CONTENTdm. The Systems & Digital Initiatives (S&DI) department took this change as an opportunity to assess a range of digital asset management systems. After an initial assessment period and review of several product options S&DI decided to self-migrate the library’s content to Adam Matthew’s new platform, Quartex. This paper describes LMU’s assessment of digital asset management systems and the process of …

Fighting Infobesity: Creating A Healthy News Diet, Aisha Conner-Gaten, Jennifer Masunaga, Elisa Acosta

LMU Librarian Publications & Presentations

We live in a continuous news culture where the average consumer must learn how to deal with information overload. We have plenty of information, but not all of it contributes to a healthy, balanced news diet. In addition to snacking on morning news and grabbing afternoon sound bites, there’s misinformation and fake news, packaged and sold in confusing ways. How can we get the news we need to become informed and engaged? In this activity, students are tasked with (a) placing a range of media sources on a grid whose axes are reliability and type of sources, and (b) articulating …

Dialogue Is A Bridge: Mapping Information Literacy, Social Justice, And Catholic Social Teaching, Desirae S. Zingarelli-Sweet, Elisa Slater Acosta

LMU Librarian Publications & Presentations

In the spirit of what Pope Francis calls a “culture of encounter” created through dialogue, first we map points of convergence and potential friction between the ALA Core Values of Librarianship, themes of Catholic social teaching, and recent articulations in library literature of what social justice should mean for libraries. Second, we look at ways these differing sets of values can concretely inform how we think about and teach the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education to our students.

  • The attendee will leave this session with starting points for reconciling LIS values and social justice ideas with Catholic …

We’Re All In This Together. Using Systems Thinking And Data Visualization To Influence The Ordering Habits Of Liaisons, Jamie G. Hazlitt

LMU Librarian Publications & Presentations

Liaison work is a secondary role for most of the librarians at the William H. Hannon Library at Loyola Marymount University, and although each librarian takes this responsibility seriously, the task of ordering books is often one that gets put off throughout the busy Fall semester. Although the library's approval plan keeps current materials across all subject areas coming in a relatively steady stream throughout the year, over 50% of our books still come in through title-by-title liaison selection. Liaison procrastination historically resulted in a deluge of book orders - often triggered by increasingly insistent reminders from the acquisitions and …

LMU Librarian Publications & Presentations

Conducting copyright clearance and ingesting appropriate versions of faculty publications can be a labor intensive and time consuming process. At Loyola Marymount University (LMU), a medium-size, private institution, the Digital Library Program (DLP) had been conducting copyright clearance one publication at a time. This meant that it took an enormous amount of time from start to finish to review and process the list of publications on a given faculty member’s CV. In October 2016, the Digital Program Librarian learned about the automated workflow developed by librarians at University of North Texas and decided to give it a try. At this …

Journal Evaluation Tool, Shilpa Rele, Marie Kennedy, Nataly Blas

LMU Librarian Publications & Presentations

The changing mechanisms of scholarly publishing may make it difficult for you to determine where to publish the results of your research or creative works. In order to assist you in making the best decisions for your work, and to avoid journals that may not be credible, the William H. Hannon Library has developed a rubric for the evaluation of journals. Our focus during the development of this tool was specifically to address the concerns of our Loyola Marymount University faculty about Open Access journals, but this rubric may be applied more broadly to any kind of journal.
