Arc welding has been widely explored for additive manufacturing of large metal components over the last three decades due to its lower capital cost, an unlimited build envelope, and higher deposition rates. Although significant improvements have been made, an arc welding process has yet to be incorporated in a commercially available additive manufacturing system. The next step in exploiting "true" arc-welding-based additive manufacturing is to develop the automation software required to produce CAD-to-part capability. The use of high-strength steels in the manufacture of energy pipelines, coupled with the transition to larger pipe diameters and greater wall thicknesses, has led to an increased potential for cracking including hydrogen assisted cracking of energy pipelines due to higher constraint induced stresses. In the present study, a modified version of the Welding Institute of Canada (MWIC) restraint test was used to simulate the constraint conditions of full-scale girth welds on energy pipelines, allowing the influence of welding process parameters on crack formation to be assessed. Thermal simulations of heat affected zone (HAZ) have been widely used. This is an economic expedite process for phase transformation evaluations in steels when subjected to weld thermal cycles as well as to draw continuous cooling transformation (CCT) diagrams. Pulsed tandem gas metal arc welding (PT-GMAW) has the potential to increase productivity and minimize distortion in the fabrication of naval surface ship panels. In this study, the PT-GMAW process was used in pulse-pulse mode to butt joint weld 5-mm DH36,8-mm HSLA65, 9.5-mm 350WT, and 11-mm HSLA65 steel plate with ER70S-6 wire in order to assess its suitability as a replacement for submerged arc welding (SAW) and gas metal arc welding (GMAW) in panel lines of Australian naval shipyards. This paper is presenting accurate FEM model of bead-on-plate welds of 316L stainless steels through thermo-mechanical analysis. The model was composed using ANSYS Parametric Design Language (APDL) program. In thermal analysis, mixed mode of volumetric thermal load was used to represent moving heat source. Growing weld bead was accommodated in both the thermal and mechanical models using birth and death technique. Melting phenomenon was modelled by low stiffness and zero plastic strain of melting elements. Results from thermal analysis and subsequent mechanical analysis have been validated. High strength quenched and tempered (Q&T) steels offer obvious economic benefits originating from their advantageous strength to price and weight ratios. These steels are usually welded using ferritic consumables and for this combination the risk of hydrogen assisted cold cracking (HACC) is high. The use of austenitic stainless steel (ASS) consumables has great potential to significantly improve this issue. Additive manufacturing (also known as rapid prototyping, shape metal deposition or near net manufacture ) is becoming an important option for low volume production of complex parts. Much of the recent effort has been devoted to laser based processes using powder feedstock and 3D printing techniques; these techniques are well suited to producing smaller complex structures in a wide range of materials. In this study, the feasibility of hybrid laser-gas metal arc welding process for replacement of conventional flux-cored arc welding procedure for welding high strength quenched and tempered steel was investigated. Experimental work focused on optimisation of process parameters to produce joint with desired properties. Hardness of the weld heat affected zone produced by both processes has been measured. Productivity and cost effectiveness of both processes were compared. It was concluded that hybrid laser-gas metal arc welding process is suitable for welding high strength quenched and tempered steel.

The objective of this study is to determine an optimal welding procedure that can be implemented to repair damaged Nickel Aluminium Bronze (NAB) components. NAB is commonly used in marine applications where components are subject to a constant corrosive environment and high stresses. Research into ideal NAB microstructure for a marine application, was performed in order to gain a baseline for experimental analysis of potential welding procedures. Efficient joining of Magnesium-base bulk metallic glass can be achieved via bonding through resistance welding using rapid heating rates. Bonding of Mg-base metallic glasses (as well as regular magnesium alloys) is a process hindered by the ease of oxide formation in these materials. In this work, resistance welding of Mg65Cu25Y10 metallic glass sheets was investigated up to 627 K , below the liquidus temperature; and also within the supercooled liquid region (443-483 K) of the metallic glass; during processing times of a few seconds, creating strong joins -even when processed in air. The study comprised of the investigation into the sensitization characteristics of AISI 409 titanium stabilized ferritic stainless steel during low heat input welding. AISI 409 is a fully ferritic stainless steel used in catalytic converters and tubing for automotive exhaust systems due to the supposition that sensitization does not occur during low heat input welding. Two plates of 2 and 4 mm were tested for sensitization during low heat input welding. High strength, thermo-mechanically treated steels often require very careful control of welding procedures to ensure freedom from hydrogen assisted cold cracking (HACC) in the weld metal and heat affected zone (HAZ) whilst avoiding undue loss of heat affected zone strength. Weld induced distortion correction is a major cost within the shipbuilding industry. This paper investigates the use of an active cooling process known as Dynamically Controlled - Low Stress No Distortion (DC-LSND) Welding on DH-36 steel. Thermal profiles are obtained and distortion measurements are also achieved. Results show that the application of a localised cryogenic cooling source trailing the welding arc can significantly reduce weld induced distortion using the GMAW process. The effect of forced cooling on the weld microstructure is also observed.
