The Household Poverty Dimensions Infuencing Forest Dependence In Protected Area Neighboring Communities In Africa And The Mitigation Potential Of Tourism: The Case Of Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda, Ian Munanura Dec 2013

The Household Poverty Dimensions Infuencing Forest Dependence In Protected Area Neighboring Communities In Africa And The Mitigation Potential Of Tourism: The Case Of Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda, Ian Munanura

All Dissertations

Volcanoes National Park (VNP) in Rwanda is one of the important protected areas for conservation in the Albertine Rift ecoregion. It inhabits some of the most rare and endemic wildlife species including mountain gorillas. Despite such importance, it continues to be threatened by forest dependence practices of local residents such as, poaching for bush meat and the harvest of non-timber forest products. These practices have been attributed largely to high levels of poverty among park neighboring residents. It is believed that poor residents rely on forest resources to supplement their subsistence livelihoods. The relationship between poverty and forest dependence behavior …

An Examination Of Service Quality And Satisfaction In A Religious Tourism Setting, Mohamed Darfoon Aug 2013

An Examination Of Service Quality And Satisfaction In A Religious Tourism Setting, Mohamed Darfoon

All Dissertations

Since the beginning of time, people have traveled far and wide seeking to gain affirmation of their faith, and to honor the lands where their religious beliefs originated. Faith tourism, or religious tourism, is a pilgrimage that is exclusively or strongly motivated by religious reasons. The pilgrimage to Mecca, known as Hajj, is an Islamic pilgrimage where Muslims travel to Mecca in Saudi Arabia to attend one of the largest religious events in the world, with participation from about 3 million people on certain days every year. Despite its spiritual and economic importance, little attention has been paid to Hajj …

Charleston Contradictions: A Case Study Of Historic Preservation Theories And Policies, David Payne Aug 2013

Charleston Contradictions: A Case Study Of Historic Preservation Theories And Policies, David Payne

All Dissertations

The philosophy, policies, and practices of historic preservation are currently struggling with how to incorporate Modern architecture, as many of these buildings are reaching the threshold to be considered historic. Since one of the movement's original goals was to counteract Modernism, it is ironic that many of the buildings initially opposed by historic preservation are now forcing the profession to consider their designation and preservation. The potential preservation of many of these buildings raises important philosophical and practical contradictions for the profession that require further study and resolution.
This study presents the results of a case study of three Modern …

Better Safe Than Sorry: Personality-Based And Overt Predictors Of Workplace Safety, Christine Pusilo Aug 2013

Better Safe Than Sorry: Personality-Based And Overt Predictors Of Workplace Safety, Christine Pusilo

All Dissertations

The current study explores the role of selection in predicting workplace safety using an applied sample of applicants and incumbents in a grocery store chain located in the Southeastern United States. Namely, both personality-based and overt selection assessments, a distinction drawn from the integrity testing literature, were used to predict on-the-job safety performance and safety outcomes. Both types of assessments were hypothesized to predict two forms of safety performance (compliance and participation), which, in turn, were expected to predict both objective (i.e., work days missed, restricted work days, and micro-accidents) and subjective (i.e., near-miss, minor injuries, and musculoskeletal pain) safety …

Bullying Among U.S. School Children: An Examination Of Race/Ethnicity And School-Level Variables On Bullying, Weijun Wang Aug 2013

Bullying Among U.S. School Children: An Examination Of Race/Ethnicity And School-Level Variables On Bullying, Weijun Wang

All Dissertations

Bullying is unwanted aggressive behavior and a damaging experience that can violate a bullied child's civil and human rights. To understand and reduce bullying in U.S. schools, it is important to recognize students' self-reported experiences with and perceptions of bullying. This study responded to limited research on races/ethnicites and bullying among children and youth in U.S. schools, and to a relatively small focus on specific school-level variables (such as the densities of races/ethnicities in school, the school's ethnic diversity, the overall poverty level of the school, student/teacher ratio, and school locations) and several other variables of interest (such as the …

The Influence Of Contextual Factors On Community Reintegration Among Service Members Injured In The Global War On Terrorism, Brent Hawkins Aug 2013

The Influence Of Contextual Factors On Community Reintegration Among Service Members Injured In The Global War On Terrorism, Brent Hawkins

All Dissertations

Community reintegration among military service members with physical and psychological injuries sustained during combat has been an emerging issue since the beginning of the Global War on Terror (GWOT) in 2001. Injured service members from the GWOT, including Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Operation New Dawn, are much more likely to survive their injuries when compared to previous wars such as the Vietnam War and World War II (Holcomb, Stansbury, Champion, Wade, & Bellamy, 2006). Therefore, many more injured service members are receiving physical rehabilitation and mental health services to assist them in transitioning back into their homes …

Essays In Energy Economics: An Inquiry Into Renewable Portfolio Standards, Laura Lamontagne Aug 2013

Essays In Energy Economics: An Inquiry Into Renewable Portfolio Standards, Laura Lamontagne

All Dissertations

In an attempt to motivate the transition away from fossil fuels, reduce carbon emissions and diversify electricity supply, twenty-nine states and the District of Columbia have adopted a Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS). An RPS is a form of regulation that requires increased electricity production from renewable energy sources. These standards vary by state but generally require a minimum percentage of electricity generation to come from renewable technologies by a predetermined date.
In the first chapter I examine the effect of the adoption of an RPS on electricity rates, making use of the increased availability of data since several policies' adoption. …

Banking Crises And The Volume Of Trade, Yifei Mu Jul 2013

Banking Crises And The Volume Of Trade, Yifei Mu

All Dissertations

This dissertation consists of three chapters. The first two chapters investigate the correlation between banking crises and bilateral trade flows. In the first chapter, we focus on how banking crises may impact the bilateral trade flows over time. We attempt to disentangle the financial shocks' impacts on trade flow by factors that are related to exporters and importers. The second chapter assesses how banking crises impact the extensive and intensive margin of the trade. The third chapter attempts to use frontier model to analyze the bidding behaviors and collusion in the different submarkets of low-price, sealed-bid construction procurement.
Since 2007 …

Schulz's Religion: Exploring Faith In The Mainstream Media Through The Peanuts Franchise, Stephen James Lind May 2013

Schulz's Religion: Exploring Faith In The Mainstream Media Through The Peanuts Franchise, Stephen James Lind

All Dissertations

This dissertation is an exploration of various theoretical and cultural issues surrounding depictions of religion and spirituality in mainstream entertainment media properties. Such portrayals cultivate particular cultural norms that dictate the conditions of public and private discourse on religion, and in this study, these issues are approached through a mixed-method study guided by the Peanuts franchise. The Peanuts franchise is a provocatively rich launching point for analysis of dominant media cultures, given its colossal success in the secular mainstream entertainment industry and its explicit references to and even affirmations of Christian theology. Throughout the study, the references to religion manifested …

Integrating Spatial Modeling Into Recreational Planning In Parks And Protected Areas, John Beeco May 2013

Integrating Spatial Modeling Into Recreational Planning In Parks And Protected Areas, John Beeco

All Dissertations

Understanding the utility of space in natural area resources is of growing importance as recreation in these areas increases and availability of land remains stagnant. Space utility is of particular importance to multiple use forests which may have multiple recreation demands, minimum acceptable levels of biophysical impacts, sensitive ecological areas, and/or timber harvesting and mineral extraction strategies for the generation of revenue. In order to holistically consider space and protected area management, three factors must be better understood: a) methods and spatial analysis tools that can help with managerial and planning decisions, b) how space affects the relationship between use …

Influencing Factors On Creative Tourists' Revisiting Intentions: The Roles Of Motivation, Experience And Perceived Value, Lan-Lan Chang May 2013

Influencing Factors On Creative Tourists' Revisiting Intentions: The Roles Of Motivation, Experience And Perceived Value, Lan-Lan Chang

All Dissertations

As Richards (2008) asserted, creative tourism is a new form of tourism that has the potential to change tourism development and make a significant contribution in differentiating and changing the tourism experience. Reviewing current literature, despite increased attention being given to the conception of creative tourism, there has been little empirical work focused on the tourists' consumption psychology of creative tourism. Thus, this study attempts to reveal tourists' intention to revisit creative tourism attractions by applying the theory of planned behavior, to explore the role of tourists' motivation, experience and perceived value on the influence of their intention to revisit …

Picture Superiority Effect In Prospective Memory: Examining The Influence Of Age And Attention Load, Nicole Fink May 2013

Picture Superiority Effect In Prospective Memory: Examining The Influence Of Age And Attention Load, Nicole Fink

All Dissertations

The picture superiority effect (i.e. better memory for pictures than words) is well established in retrospective memory, but the examination of the picture superiority effect in prospective memory has been underrepresented in the literature. Understanding if pictures lead to better prospective memory than words has the theoretical benefit of increasing our understanding of what particular factors lead to spontaneous retrieval and the practical benefit of informing the design of memory aids. Additionally, I examine if there are differences in ongoing task and prospective memory task performance between age groups (old and young) and under different loads of attention (non-divided and …

Essays On Health Trends And Health Care Efficiency, Richard Gearhart May 2013

Essays On Health Trends And Health Care Efficiency, Richard Gearhart

All Dissertations

This dissertation encompasses three papers. The first paper explores health outcomes in the United States, measured by the obesity rate and the prevalence of Type 2 diabetes, which have been worsening over calendar time. I extend the model by Grossman (1972a, 1972b) to derive how the demand for preventive and reactive medical care is changing over calendar time and the impacts these changes will have on the health of an individual. Assuming that reactive medical technology's effectiveness in curing individuals of illness has increased over time, I find results that are consistent with observed health trends in America. Based on …

Factors Influencing Volunteering Among The Elderly In The Czech Republic, Michaela Kabelkova May 2013

Factors Influencing Volunteering Among The Elderly In The Czech Republic, Michaela Kabelkova

All Dissertations

Using data from a convenience sample of 274 respondents, 55 years and older and living in the Czech Republic, the author carried out an exploratory research study to shed more light on volunteering among Czech senior citizens. Volunteering is currently promoted by the government of the Czech Republic, but as yet, remains an under-researched topic. The investigation of presumed low volunteer rates among Czech senior citizens was framed by two theories--social capital theory and socio-structural resources theory--and additionally by country specific factors that take into account geographical structure and historical development. The socio-structural resources were represented by variables related to …

Valuation Of Timberland Under Price Uncertainty, Wallace Campbell May 2013

Valuation Of Timberland Under Price Uncertainty, Wallace Campbell

All Dissertations

In the first essay, a critical examination of three commonly used stochastic price processes is presented. Each process is described and rejected as a possible model of lumber futures prices. A mean reverting generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity (GARCH) model, developed by Bollerslev (1986), is proposed as a stochastic process for lumber futures prices. The essay provides the steps that should be taken to ensure that a proper price process is used in each application.
In the second essay, a flexible harvesting strategy known as the reservation price strategy is presented. When the current price is below the reservation price, the …

Public Participation In Brownfield Redevelopment: The Role Of Public Participation In State Administered Voluntary Cleanup Programs, Erik Simon May 2013

Public Participation In Brownfield Redevelopment: The Role Of Public Participation In State Administered Voluntary Cleanup Programs, Erik Simon

All Dissertations

One of the key redevelopment tools for brownfield sites in the United States is the use of state administered Voluntary Cleanup Programs (VCP). These programs offer development entities the opportunity to cleanup and/or remediate the effected site in exchange for protection from liabilities. Public participation is a common component of such programs and each state has differing levels of policies and activities. This research investigates the different levels of public participation through state administered VCPs and seeks to understand how those different levels can affect cleanup and/or remediation plans for respective brownfield sites. The results show that there is a …

Functional Morphology And Performance Of Ecological Systems With Extreme Pressures: Waterfall Climbing And Predator-Prey Interaction In Amphidromous Gobioid Fishes, Takashi Maie May 2013

Functional Morphology And Performance Of Ecological Systems With Extreme Pressures: Waterfall Climbing And Predator-Prey Interaction In Amphidromous Gobioid Fishes, Takashi Maie

All Dissertations

Understanding the functional capacity and performance of organisms provides a strong foundation for recognizing the forces that are responsible for their form, and how they might adapt to variable or changing environmental conditions. Amphidromous stream goby fishes live in a habitat subject to two potentially extreme selective pressures: (1) predation on juvenile fish returning to freshwater from the ocean, and (2) the demand to climb waterfalls to reach adult breeding habitats. Recognizing these selection pressures, I present studies evaluating (1) the mechanisms underlying the functional capacity for adhesive performance, and (2) the risk that predation imposes on amphidromous gobies. Specifically, …

Growth Beyond The Debt Thresholds, Sine Kontbay May 2013

Growth Beyond The Debt Thresholds, Sine Kontbay

All Dissertations

This empirical study has two objectives both of which are directly related to nonlinear effects of debt on growth: The main objective is to assess the levels of public debt-to-GDP and total external debt-to-GDP ratios above which economic growth is impaired. The second objective is to examine the debt overhang effects on the sources of growth. A large panel data set of developed and developing countries over the period of 1970-2009 is employed to estimate the threshold levels for public and total external debt. The dynamic panel threshold method developed by Kremer et. al (2010) is applied to debt-growth nexus …

The Mentoring-Burnout Relationship And Predictors Of Nurse Mentoring Behavior, Meline Schaffer Jan 2013

The Mentoring-Burnout Relationship And Predictors Of Nurse Mentoring Behavior, Meline Schaffer

All Dissertations

Employee burnout can be costly for organizations as well as employees as it contributes to turnover intentions, lost productivity and negative health outcomes (Aiken & Paice, 2003; Maslach & Leiter, 2008; Shaufeli & Bakker, 2004). The nursing profession appears to be particularly influenced by this stress-related phenomenon and is the targeted population in the current study (Shaufeli & Enzman, 1998). Using the Job Demands-Resources model, mentoring was examined as a factor that may impact burnout among experienced nurses. While positive mentoring experiences could serve as a resource that buffers against burnout, negative mentoring experiences may be a job demand that …
