Working Towards A Racially Inclusive Studio, Dee Payton, Justine Dombrowski, Tian Qing Yen

Undergraduate Studio Assistant Research

Writing Centers and Studios have the potential to be more than just an inclusive space—they can be spaces that actively foster advocacy and racial justice. This module examines how racial inequality manifests on a systemic and interpersonal level within learning spaces. Interactive scenarios examine and challenge what race, racism, and microaggressions mean in the context of learning spaces, and promote reflection on inclusive practices in peer tutoring.

Three Centuries Of Synchronous Forest Defoliator Outbreaks In Western North America, Aquila Flower Oct 2016

Three Centuries Of Synchronous Forest Defoliator Outbreaks In Western North America, Aquila Flower

Environmental Studies Faculty and Staff Publications

Insect outbreaks often occur synchronously across large spatial scales, but the long-term temporal stability of the phenomenon and the mechanisms behind it are not well understood. In this study, I use a widespread lepidopteran defoliator native to western North America--the western spruce budworm--as a case study to explore patterns of and potential causes for synchronous population fluctuations. Analyses of synchrony are typically severely limited by the short historical records available for many species. To overcome this limitation, I compiled multi-century dendrochronological reconstructions of western spruce budworm outbreaks from across much of the species' range. This allowed me to analyze synchrony …

Klipsun Magazine, 2016 - Fall, Ashe Lambe Oct 2016

Klipsun Magazine, 2016 - Fall, Ashe Lambe

Klipsun Magazine

Picture, if you will, a child with matted hair and a sunken lower jaw. Clutched in that child’s hands is a notebook, tattered and filled with sweeping drawings of dragons and the scrawlings of a dreamer.

If you asked that child to write about the real world, a scoff would have followed. “Why would I write about that? It’s boring! ”

As a 10-year-old, I was convinced of this mentality. I had tried writing about myself and I had tried writing about others. Nothing ever stuck. It’s hard to write about others without taking the time to walk in their …

Women Of Color In Speculative Fiction: An Annotated Bibliography Of Authors, Rebecca M. Marrall Oct 2016

Women Of Color In Speculative Fiction: An Annotated Bibliography Of Authors, Rebecca M. Marrall

A Collection of Open Access Books and Monographs

Women of Color in Speculative Fiction: An Annotated Bibliography is tertiary electronic resource which focuses upon authors who are women of color (i.e., non-Caucasian) and who write speculative fiction for adult and young adult audiences. Examples of these authors include Octavia Butler, N. K. Jemisin, Daina Chaviano, Jewelle Gomez, and Malinda Lo. For some background, “speculative fiction” is an umbrella term for science fiction, fantasy, and some horror, all of which have literary and popular merit (Urbanski 2007). Historically, this field has been dominated by male authors of largely Caucasian descent; women and/or people of color have not been equitably …

For Your Enrichment: Assistance Animals In The Library: How One Academic Library Developed Best Practices, Rebecca M. Marrall Oct 2016

For Your Enrichment: Assistance Animals In The Library: How One Academic Library Developed Best Practices, Rebecca M. Marrall

Western Libraries Faculty and Staff Publications

Effectively addressing concerns about assistance animals in any library setting is often problematic due to a lack of awareness about assistance animals in general, which then leads to uncertainty on how to proceed in these situations. Library personnel, regardless of library type, are often unaware of legal definitions of assistance animals. When compelled to respond to a patron complaint about “a dog in the library,” many library professionals are uncertain about which questions they may legally ask a patron who is accompanied by an animal. This uncertainty then creates concern about how to act in these situations, and thus, many …

Environmental Impact Assessment Fever Creek Bridge Replacement, Analissa Merrill, Gus Landefeld, Kyle Easton, Shiloh Britt, Novella Randall Oct 2016

Environmental Impact Assessment Fever Creek Bridge Replacement, Analissa Merrill, Gus Landefeld, Kyle Easton, Shiloh Britt, Novella Randall

College of the Environment Graduate and Undergraduate Publications

The purpose of replacing the Fever Creek pedestrian bridge is to provide a safe, reliable, and environmentally responsible bridge running east to west between Superior Street and Michigan Street. Currently there is no pedestrian bridge connecting the trail that comes from the E Illinois Street Right of Way (ROW) and crosses Fever Creek. The former bridge was removed primarily due to public safety concerns, as it saw heavy use by elementary school children who would walk from their homes in the Roosevelt and Alabama Hill neighborhoods. This document will examine the impacts of reconstructing the bridge and consider two different …

Investigating The Framing Effect In Social And Behavioral Science Research: Potential Influences On Behavior, Cognition And Emotion, Joseph E. Trimble, Phd, Kamran Hughes, Joshua Thompson

Psychology Faculty and Staff Publications

The framing effect has far-reaching implications for our understanding of social psychology and intergroup behavior. In recent decades, the effect garnered considerable attention in the fields of psychology, political science, and communication studies. Whether the effect is demonstrated by repetitious news stories or in voting behavior, framing matters. It matters for both theoretical and pragmatic reasons. We will make connections between framing and politics as a way of illustrating the real world applicability of this effect. The practical relevance of the framing effect is why effectively researching it is so crucial. The purpose of this paper is to propose ways …
