Ideology, Status, And The Differential Success Of Direct Parties Before The Supreme Court, Reginald S. Sheehan, William Mishler, Donald R. Songer
Ideology, Status, And The Differential Success Of Direct Parties Before The Supreme Court, Reginald S. Sheehan, William Mishler, Donald R. Songer

A substantial literature on lower federal courts and state courts suggests that the "haves" usually come out ahead in litigation because they possess superior resources for it and they reap advantages from their repeat player status. We investigate the success of 10 categories of litigants before the Warren, Burger, and Rehnquist Courts to determine whether the resources or experience of litigants has effects on Supreme Court outcomes paralleling those found in the courts below. While different categories of litigants are found to have very different rates of success, those differences do not consistently favor litigants with greater resources. A time …

Hugh Macdiarmid: The Thorn On Scotland's Rose, University Libraries--University Of South Carolina
Rare Books & Special Collections Publications
The items listed in this catalogue were almost all taken from the G. Ross Roy Collection of the University of South Carolina's Special Libraries Division. As the reader may be aware, collecting the works of MacDiarmid is made particularly difficult because there is no bibliography, or even checklist, of his complete works. Dr. W. R. Aitken has produced a useful list of books by or edited by MacDiarmid, but much of his work is to be found only in the periodicals and books to which he contributed. While particular attention was paid to works entirely by MacDiarmid in the selection …

Walt Whitman - A Centenary Exhibition, University Libraries--University Of South Carolina
Rare Books & Special Collections Publications
This catalog accompanied the exhibit, Walt Whitman: A Centenary Exhibition. When Walt Whitman published his first edition of Leaves of Grass, he believed he was embarking on a personal literary journey of national significance. Setting out to define the American experience, Whitman consciously hoped to answer Ralph Waldo Emerson's 1843 essay, The Poet, which called for a truly original national poet, one who would sing of the new country in a new voice. Displayed are many Whitman-authored items including multiple editions of Leaves of Grass, including the first, , Memoranda During the War, as well as …

The Waccamaw-Richmond Hill Waterfront Project 1991: Laurel Hill Barge No. 2., Lynn Harris
The Waccamaw-Richmond Hill Waterfront Project 1991: Laurel Hill Barge No. 2., Lynn Harris
Research Manuscript Series
The purpose of this multi-year project is to conduct historical and archaeological research in the waterfront area of the three Georgetown area plantation sites – Richmond Hill, Laurel Hill and Wachesaw. This season of work was devoted to recording a large barge located in proximity to Laurel Hill. The primary goal was to document architectural features which would reflect the carpentry techniques used by the builders and the possible function of the vessel. Limited surface artifact sampling was conducted to provide some insights into activities and date ranges associated with the local riverine area. This project was also intended as …
