This qualitative study explored the processes of finding community and developing one’s own intersectional racial and gender identity through the social media (SM) experiences of 8 Black gender expansive (GE) adults located around the United States. LGBTQ+ people's experiences of heterosexism, which are common in the healthcare system, are linked to poor health outcomes. There are no measures of LGBTQ+ people’s experiences in healthcare settings which could be used by healthcare systems and providers to improve the quality of their care for this vulnerable population. The Daily Heterosexist Experiences Questionnaire (DHEQ), developed using the minority stress model, measures the general stressful life experiences of LGBTQ+ people. This project aimed to adapt the DHEQ for use in healthcare settings.

Transgender individuals report higher levels of elevated symptoms of depression and anxiety due to psychological distress caused by pervasive transphobic discrimination and prejudice that persist in pathologizing and stigmatizing their lived experiences. An important first step would be to develop, implement, and assess transaffirmative interventions that address the mental health issues that this population is particularly susceptible to, such as depression. This interactive workshop will provide an introduction to building inclusive library instruction for transgender and gender non-conforming students. Participants will ground themselves in an understanding of how their core values relate to trans* liberation and learn strategies for translating those values to the classroom. Through the lens of Jackson and Hardiman’s Social Identity Development Model (1997), participants will explore how sitting with discomfort and accountability increases capacity for trans* allyship.

Social networking sites (SNS) allow for rapid information sharing in online spaces. Research in the general public suggests that extended SNS use corresponds with poor mental health outcomes such as depression and anxiety. Research regarding SNS use in LGBT populations seems to promote interpersonal connectedness. While such studies tend to include gender non-conforming persons (GNC), this group often represents a minimal proportion of participants. This study sought to explore SNS and mental health in persons identifying as GNC. This highly interactive workshop will provide an introduction to creating transgender and gender non-conforming inclusive library spaces. Participants will learn skills applicable to library instruction, staff meetings, and other professional settings. Additional resources on transgender allyship will be provided.

Participants will be invited to move beyond superficial civility in order to discover how using chosen names and pronouns relates to pushing back against systemic oppression. In addition to learning about some of the systemic inequalities that transgender people face, participants will practice strategies for being gender inclusive.

Purpose: Stigma and discrimination in health care settings contribute to health disparities for transgender and non-binary (TGNB) people. Evidence suggests that a lack of training on the care for transgender and non-binary TGNB patients in medical school curricula has contributed to providers feeling unprepared to provide quality care for this population. Health care providers have the opportunity to play a key role in the reduction of health disparities for TGNB patients.
