This newsletter began with the Fall 2015 Honors English class. These students were challenged to initiate research over a topic they thought was interesting and show how it related to our campus, Stephen F. Austin State University. It is our hope that this cumulative research will help readers look at SFA a little differently.

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
This report describes archeological efforts done under six work orders for the development of Yanaguana Garden at HemisFair Park in downtown San Antonio, Texas. All of the projects were done by Prewitt and Associates, Inc. (PAI), for Adams Environmental, Inc. (AEI), and the City of San Antonio, Transportation and Capital Improvements (CoSA-TCI), under Texas Antiquities Permit No. 6846 (issued April 14, 2014). As described below, the Yanaguana Garden project is the first phase of a planned redevelopment of HemisFair Park for mixed-use purposes. Planning for how to deal with cultural resources during this redevelopment began in 2012 when PAI prepared …
The (Un)Identical Twins: Public Administration And Public Management Toward Improving Education And Training For Effective Governance In Ghana, Kwame B. Antwi-Boasiako
The (Un)Identical Twins: Public Administration And Public Management Toward Improving Education And Training For Effective Governance In Ghana, Kwame B. Antwi-Boasiako
Faculty Publications
There are some disagreements between academics and practitioners on how to improve the performance of government officials in Ghana. While academics advocate for reforms in governance through education and training, practitioners may have differing interests and expectations. Such impasse has contributed to the lack of a unified framework of concepts in nation building. Core concepts for training public managers for good governance have fragmented within public administration, public policy, and public management. However, there is hope that pre-service and in-service training and education may provide opportunities to implement reforms through human development. There should be a closer dialogue among all …
Atheists In The Media: How Public Figures And Fictional Characters Affect Public Perceptions Of Atheists, Joseph Michael Stepniewski
Atheists In The Media: How Public Figures And Fictional Characters Affect Public Perceptions Of Atheists, Joseph Michael Stepniewski
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study investigated how media depictions of atheists might influence perceptions of them based on media theories of cultivation and priming. Severe distrust and dislike of atheists found in the literature indicated a need for the study. The measurement instrument used in the study asked a sample of 195 respondents to report their media consumption habits, including news sources, television shows, and movies, as well as identify real atheists in the public eye. Respondents were then asked to rate positive and negative statements about both atheists and religious people on a Likert scale and provide basic demographic information about themselves. …

Evaluation Of Field-Based Learning In A New Online Sustainability Course, William Forbes
Bright Ideas Conference
Sustainability is a relatively new field simultaneously addressing economic health, environmental amenities, and social issues. Sustainable Community Assessment and Planning (SUS 350) is a new course in the Sustainable Community Development major, minor, and undergraduate certificate at Stephen F. Austin State University. It is designed to introduce students to: a) varied methods of data collection; b) complex community planning issues; c) synthesis of economic, environmental, and social issues. Distance (online) education is not typically associated with field-based learning. However, field work in sustainability can be encouraged through activities such as: monitoring energy/cost saving; measuring biological status; and citizen social surveys. …

Expanding Our Understanding Of People With Disabilities In Research, Miranda Sue Terry
Expanding Our Understanding Of People With Disabilities In Research, Miranda Sue Terry
Bright Ideas Conference
This presentation will specifically discuss research involving people with disabilities and how those serving on Institutional Review Boards (IRB) need to expand their understanding of this population when it comes to research participation and language used with participants.
The Belmont Report (1979) provides the three guiding ethical principles for conducting research:
(1)respect for persons, which includes autonomy,
(2)beneficence, and
(3)justice.
These should be applied to all populations and understandably there should be stricter regulations when dealing with marginalized populations but these “restrictions” need to be made with understanding about these populations.

House Of Compensation: Predictors Of Compensation-Based Psrs, Phillip Madison, Al Greule
Bright Ideas Conference
In America, socializing with friends is now a functional alternative to watching television. This study draws from research on intrapersonal communication and media effects to ask “What functions and characteristics of parasociability predict parasocial compensation for real-life interaction?” We combined data from two surveys, arguing that parasocial thinking, when functioning for purposes of internal rehearsal and self-understanding, is characterized by rehearsal, variety and self-dominance -- all of which predict parasociability as compensation for human interaction. Retroactive parasocial thinking negatively predicted compensation.

Introduction Our Client, Dr. Forbes, is doing a project to assess livability in Nacogdoches based on three mutually reinforcing areas: economics, environment, and society. He also wanted to know the types of businesses that would make students spend money at the University Mall. Our assignment from our professor was to find out Stephen F. Austin State University students’ image of the University Mall, so the research team decided to try to accomplish both objectives.
Objective The objective of the project was to gain a better understanding of the environment, economics, and Stephen F. Austin State University students’ image of University …

Gender Bias In The Perception Of Physicians, Bethany Krawietz, Lauren E. Brewer
Gender Bias In The Perception Of Physicians, Bethany Krawietz, Lauren E. Brewer
Undergraduate Research Conference
Women are often penalized when they do not project traditional, socially defined femininity (e.g., gentleness, nurture, sensitivity, lack of competitiveness, lack of drive for achievement) and instead project traditional masculinity (e.g., ambitiousness, assertiveness, self-sufficiency, authority; Heilman & Chen, 2005; Prentice & Carranza, 2002). A common arena for gender bias and penalization is in the professional workplace where women in high status positions must usually exhibit various masculine-stereotyped characteristics. Judgment disparity is evident in business and corporate marketplaces (Flynn & Anderson, 2003) as well as in the health professions where patients scrutinized female physicians more harshly than male physicians (Cousin, Mast, …
Voter Turnout In America: Are Christians More Likely To Vote?, Chad Huckaby
Voter Turnout In America: Are Christians More Likely To Vote?, Chad Huckaby
Undergraduate Research Conference
Voter turnout in the United States is an important issue in political science. There are a number of factors that affect whether an individual votes in elections, which include education, age, and race. Research on the concept of the effect that religion has on voting behavior in the United States is sparse at best. Thus, the purpose of my research was to formulate and test a hypothesis regarding turnout and religion. Given Christianity’s being the largest religion in the United States, I decided to see whether Christians are more likely to vote. The method involved using survey data from the …

Trammel's Trace On Printed Maps Of The 19th Century, Kelley A. Snowden
CRHR Research Reports
Trammel’s Trace was a nineteenth century road that traversed East Texas. Recognized today as a historic cartographic feature, this road appeared in different ways on nineteenth century printed published maps over time, and in the mid-to-late nineteenth century was reduced from a route to a fragment. This study is the first to examine the portrayal of the Trace as a historic cartographic feature, how it was presented to the general public, how its portrayal changed over time, and why it appears on the maps at all. In addition, this study is the first to use geographic information systems (GIS) to …
