Expanding Our Understanding Of People With Disabilities In Research, Miranda Sue Terry Apr 2015

Expanding Our Understanding Of People With Disabilities In Research, Miranda Sue Terry

Bright Ideas Conference

This presentation will specifically discuss research involving people with disabilities and how those serving on Institutional Review Boards (IRB) need to expand their understanding of this population when it comes to research participation and language used with participants.

The Belmont Report (1979) provides the three guiding ethical principles for conducting research:
(1)respect for persons, which includes autonomy,
(2)beneficence, and
(3)justice.

These should be applied to all populations and understandably there should be stricter regulations when dealing with marginalized populations but these “restrictions” need to be made with understanding about these populations.

House Of Compensation: Predictors Of Compensation-Based Psrs, Phillip Madison, Al Greule

Bright Ideas Conference

In America, socializing with friends is now a functional alternative to watching television. This study draws from research on intrapersonal communication and media effects to ask “What functions and characteristics of parasociability predict parasocial compensation for real-life interaction?” We combined data from two surveys, arguing that parasocial thinking, when functioning for purposes of internal rehearsal and self-understanding, is characterized by rehearsal, variety and self-dominance -- all of which predict parasociability as compensation for human interaction. Retroactive parasocial thinking negatively predicted compensation.

Stephen F. Austin State University supports a large education department that offers degrees in teaching, human sciences, human services, and educational leadership through the doctoral level. The university library’s documents collection includes monthly Bulletins published by the Texas State Department of Education from 1918-1946. The documents present an intriguing glimpse at the development of education between the two World Wars. Since they are old and in fragile condition, it was decided that the documents would become an interesting and useful research collection if preserved digitally and made available electronically. Our project succeeded because both an opportunity and need were identified, …

Historically archives and museums have sought out collections to keep in their institution. Many members of the community are not ready to donate their cherished family heirlooms to a museum or archive. The East Texas Research Center (ETRC) at Ralph W. Steen Library views collecting material in a different light. They are helping to preserve and disseminate Texas cultural heritage through the promotion of preservation of Community Collections. ETRC temporarily borrows material from the community or members of the community bring their historic material to be digitized and added to the TIDES database.
