Psychological And Economic Self-Sufficiency Among Low-Income Jobseekers With Physical Disability Barriers, Philip Young P. Hong, Hayley Sneiderman Stokar, Sangmi Choi

Philip Hong

The purpose of this research is to investigate the process of psychological empowerment by way of examin- ing the effects of perceived employment barrier on employment hope, and employment hope on economic self-suffi- ciency. A structural equation modeling analysis was used with a sample of 517 participants in a job readiness program of a community-based social service organization in Chicago. Results indicate that employment hope mediates the path between perceived barriers and economic self-sufficiency. Findings provide preliminary evidence to support an em- powerment-based approach to rehabilitation, promoting self-sufficiency among people with physical disabilities using interventions that address employment barriers and …

Beyond Training: Engaging Families In The Transition To Employment, John Kramer, Jennifer Bose, John Shepard Aug 2017

Beyond Training: Engaging Families In The Transition To Employment, John Kramer, Jennifer Bose, John Shepard

John Kramer

In spite of perceived benefits offered by trainings, it is not clear that they work well for every family. There remains a persistent gap in information and services for many families, and a further gap in employment for people with IDD. This brief summarizes findings of a scoping literature review (Kramer, Bose, & Winsor, in preparation) on the engagement of families in individuals’ employment outcomes. We explore the gaps in services, information and employment and the different engagement strategies used.

Transfiguring Desire: Divining The Origin Of Species, Sonny Nordmarken, Samuel Ace Aug 2017

Transfiguring Desire: Divining The Origin Of Species, Sonny Nordmarken, Samuel Ace

Sonny Nordmarken

In this piece, we combine autoethnographic and poetic methods/genres to examine intimate and social experiences we have had as two transmasculine queers with complex sexual and gender histories in an intergenerational relationship. If queerness/transness is a “species,” our title, playing on Darwin, promises an answer to oft-asked problematic questions of queer/trans origins. Refusing to address this question, we instead turn Darwin on himself and examine intimate moments in our lives to show how we have experienced the constant formation and personal evolution of desire and identity. Tracing memories reaching back 28 years for one of us and 58 years for …

Healthy Habits Of Hmong Students By Disability, Pa Der Vang

Pa Der Vang, PhD, MSW, LICSW

Background: Immigrants are at risk of being obese from obesogenic environments and face factors which

among Hmong adolescents with and without disabilities.
Objective: In this paper, we seek to provide baseline data about physical activity and healthy eating
among Hmong high school students with disabilities in Minnesota.
Methods: We used data from the 2016 Minnesota Student Survey. The study included responses from
1,824 Hmong high school students. We compared physical activity …

The Returns To Education And Basic Skills Training For Individuals With Poor Health Or Disability, Kevin Hollenbeck, Jean Kimmel

Kevin Hollenbeck

This paper examines linkages between disability and health status and the returns to education and basic skills training. It bases analyses on two separate data sources: wave 3 from the 1993 panel of the Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP) and the 1992 National Adult Literacy Survey (NALS). The data sets have been used to estimate standard wage equations with education and basic skills training among the independent variables. The NALS data set allows us to control for prose, quantitative, and document literacy. The wage equations rely on Heckit corrections for labor force participation, and we stratify by sex. …

Discapacidad Y Desarrollo Humano En México: El Servicio Social Universitario Como Estrategia De Mejora, Ramiro Esqueda-Walle

Ramiro Esqueda-Walle

Although there are measures such as the Human Development Index which analyze the development and determine the performance of its components, there has rarely been recognized that social aspects such as disability could translate into slower progress in subjects like life expectancy, education and economic growth. Based on this consideration, we firstly expose a framework on disability and human development. Secondly, based on the analysis of official data, we provide a brief statistical overview of disability in Mexico with particular detail on educational and economic development performance of people in this condition. Finally we outline some remarks on the role …

Reciprocity And Social Capital In Sibling Relationships Of People With Disabilities, John Kramer, Allison Hall, Tamar Heller Nov 2013

Reciprocity And Social Capital In Sibling Relationships Of People With Disabilities, John Kramer, Allison Hall, Tamar Heller

John Kramer

Sibling relationships are some of the longest-lasting relationships people experience, providing ample opportunities to build connections across the lifespan. For siblings and people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD), these connections take on an increased significance as their families age and parents can no longer provide care. This paper presents findings from a qualitative study that addresses the question, “How do siblings support each other after parents no longer can provide care to the person with I/DD?” Findings in this study suggest that siblings with and without disabilities experience reciprocity as a transitive exchange, which occurs through the creation of …

Work Injuries And Wage Losses For Partially Disabled California Workers: Discussion, Ronald G. Ehrenberg Jul 2013

Work Injuries And Wage Losses For Partially Disabled California Workers: Discussion, Ronald G. Ehrenberg

Ronald G. Ehrenberg

[Excerpt] Wayne Vroman's paper is a modest preliminary report, which is derived from an ongoing research project concerned with permanent partial disabilities and workers' compensation. The larger project will develop and implement methods for projecting postinjury earnings losses, compare actual compensation measures to these projected losses, and draw conclusions as to the adequacy and equity of workers' compensation benefits. One cannot question the usefulness of the larger project and the profession should be indebted to Vroman and his collaborators for undertaking it. One should stress, however, that the key to the success of the project will lie in their ability …
