Competing On All Fronts: Achievement Orientation And Disordered Eating, Ruth H. Striegel-Moore, Lisa R. Silberstein, Neil E. Grunberg, Judith Rodin

Ruth Striegel Weissman

Examined the relationship between disordered eating and aspects of achievement orientation in 688 female university students. Ss completed a work and family orientation (WOFO) questionnaire and a disordered eating symptoms scale (DESS). Multivariate analysis of the WOFO subscales revealed that Ss with high levels of disordered eating obtained significantly higher scores on the competitiveness subscale than Ss with low DESS scores. Findings support hypotheses of a positive relationship between competitiveness and disordered eating. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2012 APA, all rights reserved)

Body Image Dissatisfaction And Disordered Eating In Lesbian College Students, Ruth H. Striegel-Moore, Naomi Tucker, Jeanette Hsu Aug 1990

Body Image Dissatisfaction And Disordered Eating In Lesbian College Students, Ruth H. Striegel-Moore, Naomi Tucker, Jeanette Hsu

Ruth Striegel Weissman

Lesbian subcultures have been described to downplay the importance of physical attractiveness and to challenge culturally prescribed beauty ideals. Within this context, one might argue that lesbians should be more accepting of their bodies and less likely to engage in disordered eating, than would heterosexual women. The relationship between sexual orientation and body esteem has not been examined empirically yet. This study compared 30 lesbian undergraduates and 52 heterosexual undergraduates on measures of body esteem, self-esteem, and disordered eating. Few group differences were found. Lesbian students reported lower self-esteem, more ineffectiveness, more interpersonal distrust, and more difficulties in identifying their …

The Linked Systems Project Provides Current Access To Authority Information, Nita Dean, Karen S. Calhoun Aug 1990

The Linked Systems Project Provides Current Access To Authority Information, Nita Dean, Karen S. Calhoun

Karen S Calhoun

In 1985, the first computer-to-computer distribution of name authority records for cataloging was made through the Linked Systems Project (LSP), a networking tool that links the computer systems of the Library of Congress, the Research Libraries Group (RLG), and OCLC. Since then, two other LSP capabilities-record contribution and intersystem searching-have been implemented, providing the means for national sharing of name authority data among diverse systems.

Arbitrage And The Savings Behavior Of State Governments, Gilbert E. Metcalf Jul 1990

Arbitrage And The Savings Behavior Of State Governments, Gilbert E. Metcalf

Gilbert E. Metcalf

The federal tax code creates strong incentives for tax arbitrage on the part of state governments. This arbitrage activity is illegal and previous research has typically assumed that the constraint against arbitrage activity is binding. This paper explicitly tests this proposition by considering whether financial asset holdings increase as the yield spread between taxable and tax exempt securities rises. Using a data set on 40 state governments over a seven year period, I find that there is a significant response to changes in the yield spread. One implication of these results is that the Tax Reform Act of 1986, which …

Unionism And The Political Party Structure Of Northern Ireland, Allan Leonard Mar 1990

Unionism And The Political Party Structure Of Northern Ireland, Allan Leonard

Allan Leonard

This undergraduate independent study examined Unionist political reaction to developments of British Government policy towards Northern Ireland. Namely, Nationalist representatives achieved redress with the British Government, both directly and vis-a-vis the Irish Government, which should have compelled Unionists to pursue a more accommodationalist policy. Regardless, there was a paradoxical drive by integrationists in Northern Ireland for direct electoral candidacy by the Conservative Party in the regional constituency. This paper makes a defence in favour of this campaign, as a means of improving the accountability of British Government policy affecting those in its jurisdiction.

Australia Day And National Identity, Mark Pearson Jan 1990

Australia Day And National Identity, Mark Pearson

Mark Pearson

This dissertation argues that the scope and substance of the celebration of Australia Day this century can be explained using theories of national identity and invented tradition. It draws upon the columns of capital city newspapers in selected years to gauge how Australians celebrated their national day and what they thought about its significance. The dissertation argues that for most of this century Australia Day failed to make its mark on the national calendar because Australians' perceptions of their nationality were inextricably tied to their feelings of kinship with the British people. Australia Day was identified more with the hedonism …

Farming The Forest- Managing People And Trees In Reserved Forests In Northeast Thailand, James Hafner Dec 1989

Farming The Forest- Managing People And Trees In Reserved Forests In Northeast Thailand, James Hafner

James A Hafner

The accelerated rate of global forest depletion poses a series of complex
problems for development planners and resource managers in many developing
nations. Among the issues being confronted are the need for foresters to gain new
skills in managing human resources, design forest use systems which are both
productive and sustainable, and to insure that the benefits of these systems are
disrtibuted more equitably. In the last quarter of a century reserved forest lands in
Thailand have been seriously degraded through deforestation, overcutting, and the
illegal encroachment of poor and landless farmers. To counter these forces the
government proposed two …

Does Drug Abuse Treatment Affect Employment And Earnings Of Clients?, Michael T. French, J. Valley Rachal, Henrick J. Harwood, Robert L. Hubbard

Michael T. French

Drug abuse treatment is an effective way to reduce drug use. Treatment is also intended to promote other positive outcomes such as reduced criminal activity, employment and higher earnings. This study examines the impact of drug abuse treatment on the followup labor market experiences of clients. We conduct a descriptive analysis of labor force status, work effort and earnings one year prior to admission, at admission and one year following discharge. The analysis is performed with data from the Treatment Outcome Prospective Study (TOPS). TOPS is a large scale longitudinal study of over 11,000 individuals admitted to 41 federally funded …

Modeling The Signal Features Of An Escape Response: The Effects Of Cessation Conditioning In The "Learned Helplessness" Paradigm., Nancy K. Dess, T. R. Minor, M. Trauner, C. Y. Lee Dec 1989

Modeling The Signal Features Of An Escape Response: The Effects Of Cessation Conditioning In The "Learned Helplessness" Paradigm., Nancy K. Dess, T. R. Minor, M. Trauner, C. Y. Lee

Nancy K Dess

Six experiments examined the effects of signaling the termination of inescapable shock (cessation conditioning) or shock-free periods (backward conditioning) on later escape deficits in the learned helplessness paradigm, using rats (Sprague-Dawley and Bantin-Kingman). A cessation signal prevented later performance deficits when highly variable inescapable shock durations were used during pretreatment. The inclusion of short minimum intertrial intervals during pretreatment did not alter the benefits of cessation conditioning but eliminated the protection afforded by a safety signal. The beneficial effects of both cessation and backward signals were eliminated when a single stimulus signaled shock termination and a shock-free period. Finally, a …

Saving Brittle Books: An Annotated Bibliography Of Preservation Options, Susan A. Massey

Susan A. Massey

Sources of information concerning paper deterioration and approaches to researching the preservation literature are offered as an aid to administrative decision-making. A suggested list of readings keyed to a study outline allows an overview of the issues and factors involved in the current brittle books problem. Though designed to give a broad background of basic information, the annotated bibliography can also be used to develop a shelf of reference materials for preservation managers.

Problematic Relations: Franchising And The Law Of Incomplete Contracts, Gillian K. Hadfield Dec 1989

Problematic Relations: Franchising And The Law Of Incomplete Contracts, Gillian K. Hadfield

Gillian K Hadfield

This paper explores an alternative approach to the analysis of franchise contracts which takes seriously their unavoidable incompleteness. The point of departure is the fundamental insight of relational contracting theory, namely that when a contract is embedded within an identifiable relationship, such as the franchise relationship, contractual obligations are often modified, supplemented or completely supplanted by the norms of the ongoing relation. Thus far, the explication of this insight has been along largely theoretical lines. My objective in this article is to further develop the theoretical analysis of the importance of relational elements in order to fashion operational guidelines for …

Competitive Oil Prices And Scarcity Rents When The Extraction Cost Function Is Convex, Ujjayant N. Chakravorty, James Roumasset Dec 1989

Competitive Oil Prices And Scarcity Rents When The Extraction Cost Function Is Convex, Ujjayant N. Chakravorty, James Roumasset

Ujjayant Chakravorty

The relationship between the time path of equilibrium prices and scarcity rents in the case of exhaustible resources depends on the nature of the extraction cost function. This paper examines the characteristics of the resource price path and scarcity rents when the extraction cost function is increasing and convex - a shape that seems to predominate in empirical work, especially in the case of oil. Scarcity rents eventually decline and the competitive price path inflects at the point where the scarcity rents stop rising. The theory is illustrated by using realistic cost and demand estimates from the oil industry.

Assessing The Early Effects Of Emerging Trade Blocs: Research Agendas For North America And Europe., Janos L. Wimpffen, Russell B. Capelle Jr, Ann M. Oberhauser, James E. Randall, Barney L. Warf Dec 1989

Assessing The Early Effects Of Emerging Trade Blocs: Research Agendas For North America And Europe., Janos L. Wimpffen, Russell B. Capelle Jr, Ann M. Oberhauser, James E. Randall, Barney L. Warf

Ann Oberhauser

General agreement exists about at least two aspects of the formation and development of the trade blocs of North America and Europe. It is agreed, first, that the codified terms of the Canada-U.s. Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and the Single European Act (referred to here as Europe 1992) are formaI manifestations of certain inexorable processes and, second, that enactment of the agreements has consequences beyond the intentions of the framers. Other than these basic postulates, one is unlikely to find considerable agreement among researchers. Differences in theoretical outlooks, access to and interpretation of data, and national perspectives aIl conspire to …
