This study served as a preliminary investigation of training counseling students in two evidence-based practices: motivational interviewing and cognitive behavior therapy. Students’ skill demonstrations were assessed for competency at three data points during students’ graduate training program. Results showed modest success in students learning to competently practice both evidence-based approaches.

The Doctoral Comprehensive Examination In Counselor Education: Faculty Members’ Perception Of Its Purposes, Katie Kostohryz

Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision

This research focused on faculty members’ perceptions of the comprehensive examination in counselor education doctoral programs. A between-within repeated measure analysis of variance was computed to evaluate significant differences in perceptions of faculty toward five stated purposes of the comprehensive examination related to their current format of the comprehensive examination. Findings showed significant differences in perceptions within the five stated purposes of the comprehensive examination. There was no significant mean difference between faculty’s perceptions of the stated purposes and the current format of the comprehensive examination; however, a significant interaction was found between the format and purposes of the exam. …

Flipped learning is an instructional approach that employs asynchronous video lectures as homework and active, group-based activities in the classroom (Bishop, 2013). During the past decade, this teaching approach has increased in popularity among K-12 teachers and higher education instructors. Though one model of flipped learning is traditionally described in the literature, several models exist and are detailed in this article. Flipped learning is particularly beneficial to counselor education as it can help increase available class time for practicing counseling skills, engaging in application-based activities, and participating in class discussions. Multicultural competencies are critical elements in both counselor preparation and practice. In accordance with the standards of the Council of Accredited Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP), counselor education programs must implement multicultural competencies as one of core curriculum areas. Although research evidences the positive impact of multicultural training, it remains a challenge to establish which curriculum designs and pedagogical approaches are most effective. This article provides an overview of grant writing for the counseling professional. The information presented is a combination of several sources including recent literature; current government regulations, policies and submission guidelines; information from foundations and non-profit funding agencies; and the author’s own ten years in grants administration. The aim of this article is to provide counselors and counselor educators new to grant writing a better understanding of the typical processes and procedures in proposal preparation. Concepts discussed include identifying a strong need, working with a team, finding the right funder and the fundamentals of writing a successful proposal.

Counselor Educator Perceptions: College And Career Readiness Of African-American Males, Paul C. Harris, Erik M. Hines, Carlos P. Hipolito-Delgado

This paper presents the findings of a pilot quantitative study, investigating counselor educators’ perceptions of the importance of pre-service school counselor training in college and career readiness of African American males, and the ability to train pre-service counselors to facilitate the college and career readiness of African-American males. A significant difference was detected between groups in terms of their perceived ability to prepare school counselors who could implement college and career readiness programs for African American males.

As the counseling profession calls counselors to act as social justice advocates, it is imperative that they are prepared for this role. This places responsibility on counselor education programs to incorporate the necessary training into existing programs. There are strategies for infusing social justice advocacy instruction throughout the existing curricula with reasonable investments of time, energy, and funds. Professional School Counselor Perceptions Of Systemic Barriers Affecting Latino Students: Implications For Socially Just Preparation And Practice, Cassandra A. Storlie, Russell B. Toomey

Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision

Systemic barriers contribute to academic underachievement and oppression among marginalized students, particularly those from Latino decent. Qualitative survey responses from 158 professional school counselors, working in the six U.S. states with the highest populations of Latinos, were analyzed by the constant comparative method. Three overarching themes resulted. Social justice implications for professional school counselors and counselors-in-training that support the academic, personal/social and career development of Latino students are provided.

Adolescence is a crucial life stage involving aspects of identity development and decision-making that have potential life-long consequences. A sense of meaning is related to many beneficial factors during adolescence, including psychological health, academic engagement, and overall well-being. This qualitative interview study was designed to investigate middle school counselors’ perspectives and practices regarding exploring meaning with their early adolescent students. Analysis of ten individual interviews and a focus group revealed that the school counselor participants did engage in work with middle school students around meaning-making. School counselors regularly face ethical dilemmas that surround child protection and the navigation of home and school communication. Many of these issues are impacted by the school counselors’ abilities to acknowledge their own personal values while balancing ethical obligations and administrative boundaries. The following case highlights an untenured school counselor’s inner thought processes as she manages an ethical dilemma involving allegations of child abuse. This article discusses ethical decision-making and recommends advocacy for further discussion in counselor preparation programs around clinical supervision and consultation.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to describe the demographic identity of a national sample of professional school counselors who were members of the American School Counselor Association (ASCA), understand the manner in which they conceptualized their professional peer membership, and explore what sources they use to make professional and ethical decisions. Consistent with previous research, the majority of participants were white woman, across all four regions in the sample; however, when compared to previous studies, there were a slightly higher percentage of non-white school counselors. Service learning is a method of instruction that integrates volunteerism, as well as reflection, in the classroom. The purpose of this article is, therefore, to describe the implementation and design of a pre-practicum service learning experience into an Introduction to School Counseling course. The authors describe the empirically grounded design of the service learning experience, as well as the course goals, how it was integrated into the class, and a summary of student experiences.

Fostering Collaboration Between Preservice Educational Leadership And School Counseling Graduate Candidates, Janet R. Desimone, Laura A. Roberts

The purpose of this mixed-method study was to examine the perspectives of educational leadership and school counselor (SC) pre-service candidates on SC utilization in PreK-12 schools, barriers to implementing effective SC programs and professional SC identities, roles and responsibilities. Candidates (n = 105) participated in a collaborative class, where they engaged in group reflections and completed a survey. Emerging themes included time constraints, negative school culture, poor principal-counselor relationships, lack of communication and shared leadership.

Many youth participate in extracurricular activities, and research has linked activity participation with school engagement and academic success. Social-ecological theory suggests that the social contexts of different types of extracurricular activities may differentially affect student outcomes. Yet, there is scant research examining the relation between various extracurricular activities and student outcomes. The current study seeks to address this gap by exploring how participation in three activities (sports, clubs, and arts), and combinations of these activities are associated with perceptions of school climate, using multilevel modelling. Consumers are increasingly relying on user-generated content on social media for their awareness and subsequent decisions regarding travel destinations. This user-generated content – photos, comments, narratives and stories – is perceived by consumers to be more trustworthy and reliable compared to traditional sources of tourism information. ). Thus, understanding consumer motivations for sharing their travel through social media may provide tremendous advantage for tourism marketers.

Factors Related To Enrollment In A Counseling Program, Tyler Wilkinson, John Mccarthy

Little is known about economic factors associated with a student’s decision to enroll into a graduate-level counseling program. A pilot survey was conducted with 101 graduate students at a Northeastern, CACREP-accredited counseling program. The results of this study indicate that accreditation, tuition costs, and geographical proximity of the program were important factors in the decision to enroll in their graduate counseling program. Also, students with undergraduate student loan debt report higher levels of anxiety over debt upon entering a graduate-level counseling program.

The application of Post-Traumatic Growth, a resiliency based approach, for counselors working with African-American male clients who have experienced race-based trauma is described. Work groups “promote efficient and effective accomplishment of group tasks among people who are gathered to accomplish group goals” (ASGW, 2000, p. 3). Due to the prevalence of use in actual counseling settings, counselor educators frequently use work groups as a pedagogical tool in educating counselors-in-training. This article introduces a classroom intervention designed to help counseling students develop self-awareness and skills pertaining to participating in work groups. This qualitative study explored counseling student perceptions of the use of song lyrics to practice reflective listening skills. Student perceptions included reactions to a creative technique, increased confidence in reflective skills, applicability of skills, and potential issues with this activity. Differences In Perceptions Of Supervisee Contribution: Supervisors’ Vs. Supervisees’ Evaluations, Marcella D. Stark, Kelly Greggerson

Supervisees’ behaviors contribute to or detract from effective supervision. The purpose of this study was to compare supervisors’ evaluations of supervisee contribution behaviors with that of supervisees’ self-assessments using the Adapted Supervisee Utilization Rating Form (SURF). Statistically significant differences in the ratings indicate that supervisors perceive their supervisees as more proactive and open than supervisees perceive themselves. To create a milieu in which supervisees feel safe enough to share their work with supervisors and encourage supervisees to take initiative in their own learning, the researchers make the following recommendations: (1) following ACES best practices for monitoring and assessing supervisees, (2) …
