The human description and documentation of life has a long history as early as the ancient civilizations. For centuries, biological information, or information about life was preserved mostly as scientific article, illustrations, or permanent specimens. However, the discovery of the double helix structure of DNA in the 1950s, especially the launch of the Human Genome Project in the 1980s, significantly impacted the way we document information about life. This presentation will discuss the history and major formats of how biological information is documented and preserved, as well as tools to discover curated and archived biological information.

At a large university in the Midwestern United States, librarians work closely with an undergraduate agricultural innovation competition. Librarians serve as entrepreneurial information guides, providing business information instruction and consulting with student groups to mentor them through the innovation process. The competition, with a winning prize of $20,000, focuses on developing new products from soybeans to foster environmental stewardship and reduce reliance on petroleum. Competitions are a form of experiential learning, allowing students to fully experience the product design process and practice making evidence-based decisions. This poster details the design process that was used to develop the Association of College and Research Libraries “Building Your Research Data Management Toolkit: Integrating RDM into Your Liaison Work” road show. Starting with the development of learning objectives, and highlighting the multiple assessments that are offered prior to the road show experience, during the road show itself, and follows up the road show at the one month and six month post- show mark. The poster then shows the links between the learning objectives, assessments, and learning activities developed to assist learners to meet the learning objectives.

The session focused on instructors applying informed learning design to craft better learning experiences and prepare students for success by providing more guidance about student engagement with information. This paper describes an innovative approach to standards education in an undergraduate mechanical engineering technology design course. The work is focused on making standards appeal to students by using “everyday objects” (e.g. toaster, ladder, grill, etc.) as catalysts to introduce the topic of standards in a way that connects to students’ daily lives. The project involves instructor-librarian collaboration to incorporate information literacy and campus library resources into the standards curricula, so that students not only become familiar with standards resources, but also proficient at searching for and locating the documents. ESIP has been collecting and hosting Earth and Environmental ontologies in the ESIP Ontology Portal. But these ontologies have very different degrees of quality and curation. One way to ascertain this degree of quality is to locate terms with similar semantics between two ontologies and upload these mappings into the Portal. This work describes how we provide backend mappings between classes in ontologies using Agreement Maker Light, a winning algorithm from the Ontology Alignment Evaluation Initiative.
