Central Government Poverty Policy And Local Deviation: A Comparison Of Dibao Regulations Across State Levels, Maja Kolmos, Christopher Rosenmeier
Central Government Poverty Policy And Local Deviation: A Comparison Of Dibao Regulations Across State Levels, Maja Kolmos, Christopher Rosenmeier
Global Asia Journal
The Chinese government has implemented a means-tested social security net for the poorest known as dibao. We compare dibao legislation from the State Council, the Shandong provincial government, and the Qingdao municipal government. As a case study, this comparative analysis of dibao legislation across different state levels and time periods provides a method to analyze differences between central and local government levels. We show that local governments are able to subvert the intentions of the central government by adding sections and altering the language in key passages. This type of horizontal and vertical reading of multiple texts reveals priorities …
Beauty And Wages: The Effect Of Physical Attractiveness On Income Using Longitudinal Data, Vesna Gvozdenodic
Beauty And Wages: The Effect Of Physical Attractiveness On Income Using Longitudinal Data, Vesna Gvozdenodic
Honors College Theses
This paper focuses on the effect physical attractiveness has on an individual's yearly income. Unlike previous studies on beauty and the labor market, this study employs longitudinal data obtained from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health, 1994-2008), which contains interviewers' ratings of the respondent's physical attractiveness and personality attractiveness. This data is used to regress yearly income on a variety of variables that can also influence an individual's income, such as gender, age, race, BMI, personality attractiveness, education, and physical health. These factors are used to adjust for the income differentials related to looks. Results confirmed that …

Harvesting The Twittersphere: Qualitative Research Methods Using Twitter, Anthony La Rosa
Honors College Theses
Harvesting the Twittersphere explores the current state of research, by comparing quantitative to qualitative and analyzing the current market. In a consumer driven market, it seems that most businesses are neglecting to perfomr qualitative research. It could be because of the falling cost and increasing convenience of quantitative research methods provided by cloud systems such as: Salesforce.com, IBM, SAP, and Mckinsey. Another reason may be that there is no efficient or inexpensive way to conduct qualitative research on a digital platform. While certain companies try to conduct qualitative studies online by using chat rooms, discussion boards or Facebook prompts, there …
Lazy Thinking: How Cognitive Easing Affects The Decision Making Process Of Business Professionals, Gianmarco Armenia
Lazy Thinking: How Cognitive Easing Affects The Decision Making Process Of Business Professionals, Gianmarco Armenia
Honors College Theses
This paper examines how business and financial decision making are influenced by behavioral biases such as cognitive ease, overconfidence, herding and the endowment effect. I do this in two ways. First, I show historical examples of irrational decisions and the detrimental effects on the individual, society, the company, and shareholders from these decisions. Second, I conduct a survey of business students to examine how susceptible they are to behavioral biases. I find that most students are in fact allowing cognitive easing to alter their decisions negatively.

Not Too Peaceful: Maritime Rifts And Governance Crises In China, Joseph Tse-Hei Lee
Faculty_Staff_Showcase
Much attention has been paid to China’s determination to exert its influence over the East and South China seas using both political and military power. The final few weeks of 2013 saw a rapid deterioration of the diplomatic goodwill that China had built with its maritime neighbours over the past several decades, threatening regional stability and risking an arms race with the U.S., Japan, and Southeast Asia. This article draws on some snapshots of the latest sovereignty disputes in the East and South China seas and the bilateral ties across the Taiwan Strait to discuss the continuities and breakpoints in …

Caregiver anecdotes attest that music and photographs play an important role for family members diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease (AD), even those with severe AD. Tablets and iPads, which are prevalent, can be utilized with dementia patients in portraying favorite music and family photographs via apps developed in close partnership with geriatric facilities. This study addresses cognitive functioning and quality of life for people diagnosed with dementia via technology. Research has shown that technology instruments such as iPods, help stimulate those with dementia. This study focuses on innovative devices such as iPads and tablets, which are mainstream and easy to use, …
