Religious Affiliation, Religious And Spiritual Practices, And Burnout Among Adolescent Residential Staff Members, Tara Sanderson, Rodger K. Bufford, Mary K. Peterson, Victoria Ravensberg

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

Adolescent residential treatment staff members have jobs that are emotionally exhausting, physically taxing and spiritually draining. Good coping skills, including religious/spiritual practices, may reduce burnout. Results from a small rural adolescent residential treatment center indicated a high degree of burnout. Burnout was negatively correlated with existential and religious well-being, stress, income, social support and personal mental health treatment

Adhd Differences On The Stanford Binet Intelligence Scale, Fifth Edition, Meridee Runge, Rodger K. Bufford, Elizabeth Hamilton, Gale Roid

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common psychiatric diagnosis in childhood that requires a level of attention or hyperactivity that falls short of the expected developmental level. Past research shows cognitive discrepancies in ADHD populations with verbal deficiencies observed primarily in tasks that require a combined auditory and verbal component. Working memory has been a long acknowledged deficit in persons with ADHD. This research examines cognitive differences among children with ADHD on working memory and other components of the Stanford Binet, 5th edition (SB5). Stanford Binet verbal and nonverbal working memory was hypothesized to be different for the ADHD sample compared …

Implications For Sin And Psychology: An Investigative Study Of The Sin Awareness Scale, Keith A. Louwerse May 2009

Implications For Sin And Psychology: An Investigative Study Of The Sin Awareness Scale, Keith A. Louwerse

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

Though scientific psychology once attempted to distance itself from religious constructs, times have changed. It now seems clear that the clinical practice of psychology involves metaphysics as well as science (O'donohue, 1989, Jones, 1994). Recent research also shows significant relationships between religion, spirituality and health (Hill and Pargament, 2003, Richards and Bergin, 2005). Yet the body of psycho logy and scholarship largely overlooks the study of sin. As a result, there is a shocking absence of measurement tools for research on perceptions of sin. What are the psychological implications of a Christian view of sin? Before studying the religious notion …

You Say You're Happy, But You Look So Sad: A Study Of Incongruent Emotional Expressions, Jennifer K. Brogan Apr 2009

You Say You're Happy, But You Look So Sad: A Study Of Incongruent Emotional Expressions, Jennifer K. Brogan

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

Since the 1930s, various versions of the Stroop interference task have been used to illuminate how the mind processes information. Over the past 10 years it has been applied to emotion recognition processing in increasingly complex, competing expressions. Koch (2006) used competing emotion words and faces and found the words produced interference in identifying the facial emotion, particularly when they were incongruent and the eyes were removed. Continuing the research studying how emotions are processed toward more natural situations, an emotion recognition Stroop test of simultaneous emotional facial pictures and spoken emotional words was presented in 600 randomized congruent, incongruent, …

Spiritual Coping In Children Diagnosed With Cancer, Jory L. Smith Mar 2009

Spiritual Coping In Children Diagnosed With Cancer, Jory L. Smith

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

Children coping with chronic illnesses employ a variety of strategies to help them defend against their illness-related stressors. In a study of children diagnosed with asthma, Ezop (2002), using the Children’s Religious Coping Scale (CRC), found that the use of positive religious coping techniques led to a better adaptation to life and a more positive perspective on illnesses. The Ezop study also found that children and adolescents used positive religious coping moderately and made only limited use of negative religious coping. The present study analyzed the positive and negative coping skills of adolescents diagnosed with cancer. Specifically, in a prior …

Screening For Mental Health Issues: Past Training And Current Practice Ofphysical Therapists, Amy E. K. Aadland Mar 2009

Screening For Mental Health Issues: Past Training And Current Practice Ofphysical Therapists, Amy E. K. Aadland

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

Given the prevalence of mental health issues in the United States, increased screening measures are necessary to identify and treat individuals affected by mental health disorders. Literature indicates comorbidity between chronic pain, making those who experience chronic pain good candidates for focused screening efforts. Physical therapists are potential screeners since they frequently treat individuals with chronic pain. A survey sent to physical therapists to assess their previous training and attitudes towards mental health issues in the physical therapy environment indicated that the mental health of a patient played a role in the success of physical therapy. Previous training also played …

“Reporters Gone Wild” Reporters And Their Critics On Hurricane Katrina, Gender, Race & Place, Steven Classen Jan 2009

“Reporters Gone Wild” Reporters And Their Critics On Hurricane Katrina, Gender, Race & Place, Steven Classen

Faculty Publications - Department of Communication and Cinematic Arts

The great fiction of the southern United States is frequently characterized by its passionate embrace of place. In her classic essay, “Place in Fiction,” the widely beloved Mississippi author Eudora Welty writes, “Place in history partakes of feeling, as feeling about history partakes of place. Feelings are bound up in place. Location is the ground conductor of all the currents of emotion and belief and moral conviction that charge out from the story in its course.”

Welty's rich stories evoke larger traditions of southern art and everyday culture imbued with multifaceted understandings of place. Starting with Welty's insight, in this …

Acculturation And The Body Image Of Alaska Native Women, Travis Williams, Rodger K. Bufford, Nancy S. Thurston, Kathleen Gathercoal Jan 2009

Acculturation And The Body Image Of Alaska Native Women, Travis Williams, Rodger K. Bufford, Nancy S. Thurston, Kathleen Gathercoal

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

This study examined the way acculturation affects Alaska Native women’s body perception. A secondary goal was to establish an understanding of interactions of native peoples with the majority society. Little research has been conducted regarding the ways in which indigenous people are affected by societal norms, although much research has identified how immigrant people groups are affected. It was hypothesized that while the ideal body image of both cultures may be similar as a result of adherence to cultural norms, the Alaska Native sample would be more accepting of their bodies than the White Alaskan sample. It was hypothesized for …
