Booth Library added several anatomical models to the Ballenger Teachers Center circulating collection in 2005. One of the challenges resulting from purchasing these models was finding suitable containers for shelving and circulation. This poster reports on the condition and use of the models four years later.

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

After adopting a federated search product and featuring it prominently on the library's Web site in 2006, Booth Library greatly reduced the visibility of the product in 2008 due to poor performance and lower than expected use. This session provides evidence from actual practice on the use of federated searching.

Attachment Avoidance Predicts Inflammatory Responses To Marital Conflict, Jean-Phillipe Gouin, Ronald Glaser, Timothy J. Loving, William B. Malarkey, Jeffrey R. Stowell, Carrie Houts, Janice K. Kiecolt-Glaser Oct 2009

Attachment Avoidance Predicts Inflammatory Responses To Marital Conflict, Jean-Phillipe Gouin, Ronald Glaser, Timothy J. Loving, William B. Malarkey, Jeffrey R. Stowell, Carrie Houts, Janice K. Kiecolt-Glaser

Jeffrey R. Stowell

Marital stress has been associated with immune dysregulation, including increased production of interleukin-6 (IL-6). Attachment style, one’s expectations about the availability and responsiveness of others in intimate relationships, appears to influence physiological stress reactivity and thus could influence inflammatory responses to marital conflict. Thirty-five couples were invited for two 24-hour admissions to a hospital research unit. The first visit included a structured social support interaction, while the second visit comprised the discussion of a marital disagreement. A mixed effect within-subject repeated measure model indicated that attachment avoidance significantly influenced IL-6 production during the conflict visit but not during the social …

A Plotless Density Estimator Based On The Asymptotic Limit Of Ordered Distance Estimation Values, Barry J. Kronenfeld Jan 2009

A Plotless Density Estimator Based On The Asymptotic Limit Of Ordered Distance Estimation Values, Barry J. Kronenfeld

Barry J. Kronenfeld

Estimation of tree density from point-tree distances is an attractive option for quick inventory of new sites, but estimators that are unbiased in clustered and dispersed situations have not been found. Noting that bias of an estimator derived from distances to the kth nearest neighbor from a random point tends to decrease with increasing k, a method is proposed for estimating the limit of an asymptotic function through a set of ordered distance estimators. A standard asymptotic model is derived from the limiting case of a clustered distribution. The proposed estimator is evaluated against 13 types of simulated generating processes, …

The Influence Of Viewpoint And Object Detail In Blind People When Matching Pictures To Complex Objects, Morton A. Heller, Tara Riddle, Erin Fulkerson, Lindsay Wemple, Anne Mcclure Walk, Stephanie Guthrie, Crystal Kranz, Patricia Klaus Jan 2009

The Influence Of Viewpoint And Object Detail In Blind People When Matching Pictures To Complex Objects, Morton A. Heller, Tara Riddle, Erin Fulkerson, Lindsay Wemple, Anne Mcclure Walk, Stephanie Guthrie, Crystal Kranz, Patricia Klaus

Morton A. Heller

We examined haptic viewpoint effects in blindfolded-sighted (BS) and visually impaired subjects: early blind (EB), late blind (LB), and very low vision (VLV). Participants felt complex objects and matched tangible pictures to them. In experiment 1, the EB and BS subjects had similar overall performance. Experiment 2 showed that the presence of a detail on the target object lowered performance in the BS subjects, and that matching accuracy was lower overall for top views for the blind subjects. In experiments 3 ^ 5, EB, LB, VLV, and BS subjects made judgments about perspective pictures of a model house with more …

Pass The Plate: The Legend & Legacy Of United States Congressman Kenneth J. Gray, Marleis A. Trover

Faculty Research and Creative Activity

Pass the Plate, the Legend and Legacy of United States Congressman, Kenneth J. Gray is told by stories that showcase one the most effective Congress-man of the Twentieth Century--the Congressman that made deals to actualize his visions and the visions of individuals who identified the nation's common good. Kenny was an ordinary person from an ordinary place that was able to accomplish extraordinary things for the people. As writers, the primary strategy of this book is to convey his success from the perspective of two citizen educators.

For any organization to succeed, the leader must provide hope--hope that something better …

Gambling Awareness For Youth: An Analysis Of The "Don't Gamble Away Our Future" Program, Lisa M. Taylor

Faculty Research & Creative Activity until 2018 (FCS)

Gambling has become increasingly popular among minors and is easily accessible to them. This is alarming since research has indicated that minors are more susceptible to gambling pathology than adults. Additionally, gambling has devastating effects on minors that gamble as well as their families and communities. The Illinois Institute for Addiction Recovery (IIAR) developed a gambling awareness prevention program called “Don’t Gamble Away our Future™” to educate minors about gambling and the dangers associated with it. The IIAR started collecting data for the purpose of evaluation in 2005. The purpose of the current study was to evaluate the program’s effectiveness …
