Observations On The Aboriginal Remains In Eastern New Jersey: The Notebook Of Charles F. Woolley, 1878-1881, Megan E. Springate
Observations On The Aboriginal Remains In Eastern New Jersey: The Notebook Of Charles F. Woolley, 1878-1881, Megan E. Springate
Megan E. Springate
Charles F. Woolley was a school teacher and avocational archaeologist in New Jersey in the late nineteenth century. One of his notebooks, which survives in a local history repository, includes details of his collection, which was largely prehistoric. Information from the notebook was used to identify site locations, and to track down several artifacts that Woolley had donated. I have removed specific site location information from this publicly available version of the conference paper.
Media Advisers - Shadow Players In Political Communication, Richard Phillipps
Media Advisers - Shadow Players In Political Communication, Richard Phillipps
Richard Phillipps
Extract:Synopsis:It is a commonplace in political communication that the news media mediate wider political realities to their audiences. The extent to which that news content is itself mediated by others is a more ambiguous and problematic area. Perhaps because it is rarely directly visible to the public, the work of media advisers or press secretaries has become the subject of much speculation, with sweeping claims about their power. This thesis systematically explores the role of media advisers, a backroom group sometimes labelled spin-doctors or minders. Until now, this pivotal group in democratic political communication has not been the focus of …

Questionnaires In Dictionary Use Research: A Reexamination, Robert Lew
Questionnaires In Dictionary Use Research: A Reexamination, Robert Lew
Robert Lew
The present paper re-examines the usefulness of questionnaires in dictionary use research, using Glynn Hatherall's well-known criticism of questionnaires as a starting point. It is argued here that charges directed at questionnaires apply equally easily to the alternatives suggested by Hatherall. It is claimed that some research questions require a questionnaire approach. It is also demonstrated through example that unreliability of questionnaire-based studies may well result from design factors unrelated to questionnaires themselves. Use of multiple methods and careful design is advocated. Finally, suggestions are offered for improving questionnaire design in dictionary use research.
A Study In The Use Of Bilingual And Monolingual Dictionaries By Polish Learners Of English: A Preliminary Report, Robert Lew
Robert Lew
The paper presents a selection of results from a study investigating dictionary use by 712 Polish learners of English representing a variety of FL competence levels and backgrounds. Data from Learner Survey, experiment, and Teacher Survey are brought in to test hypotheses relating to a variety of aspects of dictionary use. Here two aspects have been selected for presentation. First, frequency with which learners seek different types of information in their dictionaries is analyzed. It is found that the need for meaning and equivalents dominates over non-semantic information at all levels but the highest. At the advanced level, interest in …

Thomas Kuhn E A Psicossociologia Da Pesquisa Científica, Paulo S. Peres
Paulo S. Peres
Epistemologia Sem Sujeito: A Filosofia Das Ciências Proposta Por Karl Popper, Paulo S. Peres
Epistemologia Sem Sujeito: A Filosofia Das Ciências Proposta Por Karl Popper, Paulo S. Peres
Paulo S. Peres

Brush Fences And Basket Traps: The Archaeology And Ethnohistory Of Tidewater Weir Fishing On The Oregon Coast, Scott Byram
Brush Fences And Basket Traps: The Archaeology And Ethnohistory Of Tidewater Weir Fishing On The Oregon Coast, Scott Byram
R. Scott Byram, Ph.D.
Anthropologists recognize the economic importance of fishing weirs in the harvest of marine resources by Northwest Coast peoples. Yet very little research has focused on the range of variability in weir technology and its cultural and environmental context. I examine intertidal fishing technologies on the Oregon Coast, a southerly portion of the Northwest Coast. On the Oregon Coast, the estuary ecotone held a great abundance and diversity of fishes. The largest and most numerous Native residential centers were located along the shores of estuaries, and tidewater fishing appears to have been central to the region’s economy.
I examine extensive unpublished …

The Place Of The Oromo Diaspora In The Oromo National Movement: Lessons From The Agency Of The "Old" African Diaspora In The United States, Asafa Jalata
Asafa Jalata
Just as European and African slave traders merchandised Africans and created the old African diaspora, successive colonial and authoritarian regimes2 of Ethiopia forced some Oromos out of their homeland, Oromia, and caused them to settle in the West. The displaced Oromo entered the United States as one of the "new" African diaspora groups four centuries after the old African diaspora began to be created. In the process, the Oromo diaspora emerged on the world stage. Whereas the old African diaspora lived under racial slavery and segregation for almost three centuries, the new African diaspora communities such as the Oromo came …
