Planning And Implementing A Virtual Open House, 2021-2022, Holly M. Surbaugh, Adrienne Warner

Outreach and instruction librarians at the University of New Mexico, Main Campus launched the asynchronous, online Virtual Open House program during the 2021 lockdown in order to transition from “before-times” in-person tours to the paradigm of fully remote services. After a successful pilot, the program has continued as a sustainable, longer-term solution to staffing constraints even after University Libraries reopened to the public. This file collection captures planning documents and other program artifacts that will prove useful in replicating this event at other libraries.

Filling In The Gaps: A Diversity Audit Toolkit From Tredway Library, María Evelia Emerson, Lauryn Grace Lehman

Library and Information Science: Faculty Scholarship & Creative Works

In the spring of 2021, the Tredway Library at Augustana College (Rock Island, IL) implemented an audit of the library's print book collection to see if there were gaps in representation of the voices of authors of differing races/ ethnicities; genders; or sexual orientations. With the results of this audit, Augustana librarians now have a better understanding of which voices and perspectives are missing and/or underrepresented in the print collection. This toolkit is intended to assist other libraries / information organizations in undertaking similar diversity audits of their own.

As the University of New Mexico responded to the coronavirus pandemic with emergency building closures and a shift to online services, the University Libraries faced challenges making and maintaining personal connections with users in the absence of face-to-face contact. Recognizing that necessary public health restrictions isolated all students, faculty, and staff to some extent, a science librarian and an English librarian collaborated to develop a series of three Zoom-facilitated programs that provided fun activities (i.e., a movie watch party, a book discussion, and a team trivia game) to engage a socially distanced campus community while highlighting various library resources. This poster presentation discussed how to use LibGuides to improve student learning in the classroom when the curriculum might not otherwise draw upon library resources. LibGuides can be created with links to specific open access resources, articles, and other items (as well as subscription resources) to support course assignments. Course LibGuides bring visibility to library resources that get overlooked and are easy to implement for distance learning or to complement other instructional materials.

Investigating the use of gold open access content within subscription content has been a near impossible task until the adoption of the COUNTER 4 statistics in 2014. By reviewing the COUNTER JR1 GOA 2014 reports, two librarians evaluate the gold open access usage at their respective institutions from the following publishers: Elsevier, NPG, Sage, Springer, and Wiley. This initial investigation will be a benchmark for future studies to see if there is any impact on subscribed content or if usage is limited to non-subscribed content from these providers.
