Health Locus Of Control And Depression In Chronic Kidney Disease: A Dynamic Perspective, Jamie Cvengros, Alan Christensen, William Lawton Aug 2005

Health Locus Of Control And Depression In Chronic Kidney Disease: A Dynamic Perspective, Jamie Cvengros, Alan Christensen, William Lawton

Alan J. Christensen

Participants in the present study were 207 patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) who completed internal HLOC and depression measures at baseline and at an approximately 16-month follow-up period. Regression results indicated that after controlling for baseline level of depression, baseline internal HLOC was not a significant predictor of depression at follow-up. However, increases in internal HLOC over the 16-month follow-up were predictive of depression at follow-up. Furthermore, this relationship was qualified by an interaction between change in internal HLOC and disease progression. These results suggest that changes in internal HLOC over time may be a particularly important determinant of …

Beyond Nomothetic Classification Of Behavioral Difficulties: Using Valued Outcomes Analysis To Deal With The Behaviour Problems That Occur In The Classroom, Vicki Bitsika May 2005

Beyond Nomothetic Classification Of Behavioral Difficulties: Using Valued Outcomes Analysis To Deal With The Behaviour Problems That Occur In The Classroom, Vicki Bitsika

Vicki Bitsika

The number of students who are labeled as having some form of behavioural disorder which requires specialized assistance in the regular school setting is growing. Current approaches to working with these students are often based on the standardized application of treatments designed to modify general symptoms rather than specific behaviours. It is noted that this approach to behaviour-change is limited because it does not seek to understand the reasons why particular behaviours are being used by students in particular settings. This paper will present an idiographic framework as an alternative approach to creating meaningful and long-term changes in the behavioural …

Adjustment In Mothers Of Children With Asperger Syndrome: An Application Of The Double Abcx Model Of Family Adjustment, Kenneth Pakenham, Christina Samios, Kate Sofronoff Apr 2005

Adjustment In Mothers Of Children With Asperger Syndrome: An Application Of The Double Abcx Model Of Family Adjustment, Kenneth Pakenham, Christina Samios, Kate Sofronoff

Christina Samios

The present study examined the applicability of the double ABCX model of family adjustment in explaining maternal adjustment to caring for a child diagnosed with Asperger syndrome. Forty-seven mothers completed questionnaires at a university clinic while their children were participating in an anxiety intervention. The children were aged between 10 and 12 years. Results of correlations showed that each of the model components was related to one or more domains of maternal adjustment in the direction predicted, with the exception of problem-focused coping. Hierarchical regression analyses demonstrated that, after controlling for the effects of relevant demographics, stressor severity, pile-up of …

Ethnography In Counseling Psychology Research: Possibilities For Application, Lisa Suzuki, Muninder Ahluwalia, Cherubim Quizon, Jacqueline Mattis Mar 2005

Ethnography In Counseling Psychology Research: Possibilities For Application, Lisa Suzuki, Muninder Ahluwalia, Cherubim Quizon, Jacqueline Mattis

Cherubim A Quizon

The emphasis placed on prolonged engagement, fieldwork, and participant observation has prevented wide-scale use of ethnography in counseling psychology. This article provides a discussion of ethnography in terms of definition, process, and potential ethical dilemmas. The authors propose that ethnographically informed methods can enhance counseling psychology research conducted with multicultural communities and provide better avenues toward a contextual understanding of diversity as it relates to professional inquiry.

Fox Urine As An Aversive Stimulus:, Valeri Farmer-Dougan, Seshanand Chandrashekar, David Stutzman, Kari Bradham, James Dougan Dec 2004

Fox Urine As An Aversive Stimulus:, Valeri Farmer-Dougan, Seshanand Chandrashekar, David Stutzman, Kari Bradham, James Dougan

James Dougan

Predator urine, specillcally fox urine, is a noxious but harmless olfactory stimulus. The results of previous studies have shown that fox urine is aversive to rats, and that rats react to fox urine in a similar manner as to other psychostressors. In the present study, the authors further investigated the use of fox urine as an aversive or stressful stimulus, specillcally examining behavior change in open-field place-preference task. Three methods of presenting the fox urine were examined. Results indicated thai fox urine decreased behavior, especially locomotion, during both fox-urine presentation and during a post-fox-urine recovery session. Data suggested that (a) …

Behavioral Contrast In A Group Foraging Paradigm, James Dougan, Valeri Farmer-Dougan Dec 2004

Behavioral Contrast In A Group Foraging Paradigm, James Dougan, Valeri Farmer-Dougan

James Dougan

Two experiments examined multiple schedule behavioral contrast in a group foraging paradigm. Groups of five rats foraged simultaneously in a large open field apparatus with two feeding stations. Food pellets were delivered at each of the feeding stations on multiple Variable Time schedules. As predicted by both the matching law and the ideal free distribution, the relative distribution of behavior between the two feeding stations roughly matched the relative rate of food delivery at the feeding stations. These differences were reflected in both the behavior of individual animals and in the behavior of the group. Positive behavioral contrast was found …

Previous neuroimaging studies examining recognition of famous faces have identified activation of an extensive bilateral neural network [Gorno Tempini, M. L., Price, C. Measuring Help-Seeking Intentions: Properties Of The General Help-Seeking Questionnaire, Coralie J. Wilson Dec 2004

Measuring Help-Seeking Intentions: Properties Of The General Help-Seeking Questionnaire, Coralie J. Wilson

Coralie J Wilson

A clear understanding of help-seeking intentions and behavior is fundamental to the identification of factors that can be modified to facilitate young people’s help-seeking when they are psychologically distressed or suicidal. Despite considerable research on help-seeking intentions and behavior for personal-emotional or distressing problems, integrating prior research has been impeded by a lack of consistent and psychometrically sound help-seeking measures. The General Help-Seeking Questionnaire (GHSQ) was developed to formally assess two aspects of help-seeking: (1) current intentions to seek help from different sources for different problems; and (2) quantity and quality of previous professional psychological helping episodes. The current study …

Can Hopelessness And Adolescents’ Beliefs And Attitudes About Seeking Help Account For Help Negation?, Coralie J. Wilson Dec 2004

Can Hopelessness And Adolescents’ Beliefs And Attitudes About Seeking Help Account For Help Negation?, Coralie J. Wilson

Coralie J Wilson

Avoidance of appropriate help is common in acutely suicidal samples and has been confirmed in nonclinical samples but factors that contribute to this help negation effect remain unclear. The current study is the second in series from the first author's larger PhD research program. In a sample of 269 nonclinical Australian high school students, the current study examines the impact of hopelessness, previous mental health care, beliefs, and attitudes toward professional psychological help on the help negation relationship. Results revealed that suicidal ideation significantly predicted lower help seeking intentions and that although hopelessness could not explain the help negation effect, …
