This chapter investigates the changes in customers' responses to mobile direct mail (DM) coupons on the shop visit probability (SVP) of a beauty parlor. Two experiments were carried out to examine the promotional effects of mobile DM coupons. The first experiment, conducted in 2004, compared mobile DM coupons with postcard DM coupons. The mobile DM coupons were found to have no effect on SVP, although positive effects were observed for postcard DM coupons. The second experiment, conducted in 2005 with three types of mobile DM coupons, compared the responses of new customers with those of repeat customers. The results varied …

The effect of long term exposure of full size bolts to corrosive environments is presented. A special test rig was used to test four bolts under different loading conditions. Four X-grade identical profile bolts, each 21·7 mm core diameter (23·7 mm full diameter) were subjected to prolonged corrosion testing using acid sulphate water. The pH value of the circulated water varied between 3·4 and 4·3. The corrosion exposure test period lasted 3·5 years. Two bolts were axially loaded to 10 t and 20 t force respectively, the third bolt was subjected to a 360 Nm torsion load and the fourth …

Acceptance And Commitment Therapy (Act) For Improving The Lives Of Cancer Patients: A Preliminary Study, Danielle Feros, Lisbeth Lane, Joseph Ciarrochi, John Blackledge

joseph Ciarrochi

Background This preliminary study examined the effectiveness of an Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) intervention at improving the quality of life among cancer patients. It was hypothesised that over the course of the intervention, patients would report increased psychological flexibility through acceptance of unpleasant thoughts and feelings, and that increased psychological flexibility would lead to improvements in distress, mood, and quality of life. Method Forty-five cancer patients participated in an ACT intervention. Outcome measures included self-reported distress, mood disturbance, psychological flexibility, and quality of life. Data were collected at pre, mid, and post-intervention and at 3-month follow-up. Results The data …

Personality Predictors Of Peer-Rated Adjustment And Likeability: A Three-Year Longitudinal Study, Patrick Heaven, Joseph Ciarrochi

joseph Ciarrochi

We hypothesized that girls would be more responsive than boys to opposite sex characteristics that indicated the likelihood of worldly success (i.e., academic ability) and pro-social behaviour (i.e., Conscientiousness (C), Agreeableness (A), and low Psychoticism (P)). Students (381 boys; 389 girls) completed individual difference measures in their first year of high school (Grade 7; Mean age 12.28) and then at approximate twelve month intervals for the next three years. Peer-rated adjustment and likeability ratings were obtained in Grades 9 and 10. Results indicated that the extent a girl viewed a boy as adjusted was influenced by that boy's level of …

On Being Mindful, Emotionally Aware, And More Resilient: Longitudinal Pilot Study Of Police Recruits, Joseph Ciarrochi, Frank Deane, Virginia Williams

joseph Ciarrochi

Police officers are at particular risk of stress when compared to people in other occupational groups. A compounding factor is that police are prone to the use of avoidant coping strategies when attempting to deal with this stress. Evidence suggests that “anti-avoidance” strategies, of acceptance, mindfulness and emotional awareness, are more effective ways of coping, and are linked to both mental health and personal effectiveness. This study followed 60 trainee police officers from the recruit phase into the workplace to determine if these processes predicted more positive mental health and wellbeing in police recruits after 1 year of service. Mindfulness …

Cognitive Ability And Health-Related Behaviors During Adolescence: A Prospective Study Across Five Years, Joseph Ciarrochi, Patrick Heaven, Timothy Skinner

joseph Ciarrochi

Longitudinal research on the links between intelligence and health behaviors among adolescents is rare. We report longitudinal data in which we assessed the relationships between intelligence as assessed in Grade 7 and consequential health outcomes in Grade 11. The mean age of respondents (N=420; 188 males, 232 females) was 12.30 years (SD=0.49) in Grade 7and 16.17 years (SD=0.45) in Grade 11. They completed standardized verbal and numerical ability tests and a measure of conscientiousness in Grade 7 and health related questions in Grade 11. Results indicated that higher intelligence was associated with a number of healthy behaviors including delay in …

On Being Aware And Accepting: A One-Year Longitudinal Study Into Adolescent Well-Being, Joseph Ciarrochi, Todd Kashdan, Peter Leeson, Patrick Heaven, Carlie Jordan

joseph Ciarrochi

The nature and potential benefit of awareness and experiential acceptance in adolescence remains neglected and understudied. To address this gap in the literature, 776 students (50% female) in Grade 10 completed measures of mindfulness, emotional awareness, and experiential acceptance, as well as measures of major personality traits. To study prospective changes, assessments of emotional well-being were completed across a 1-year interval. Analyses revealed that “Acting with Awareness” (engaging fully in one’s current activity with undivided attention), emotional awareness, and experiential acceptance where all linked to prosocial tendencies and uniquely predicted increases in well-being across the year. Observing experience (noticing, observing, …

Relations Between Social And Emotional Competence And Mental Health: A Construct Validation Study, Joseph Ciarrochi, Gregory Scott, Frank Deane, Patrick Heaven Jul 2015

Relations Between Social And Emotional Competence And Mental Health: A Construct Validation Study, Joseph Ciarrochi, Gregory Scott, Frank Deane, Patrick Heaven

joseph Ciarrochi

Researchers working fairly independently of each other have created numerous measures of social and emotional competence (SEC). These measures tend to correlate (sometimes highly) with each other and with measures of stressful events, suggesting potential redundancy. We evaluated which, if any, SEC variables predicted unique variance in social and mental health after controlling for other SEC variables in the study and the impact of stressful events. Three-hundred and thirty-one university students participated in an anonymous, cross-sectional study. We measured stressful events, and a wide variety of SECs, including: social problem solving skill (effective problem orientation, automatic processing, and problem solving), …

The Role Of Emotion Identification Skill In The Formation Of Male And Female Friendships: A Longitudinal Study, H. Claire Rowsell, Joseph Ciarrochi, Patrick Heaven, Frank Deane Jul 2015

The Role Of Emotion Identification Skill In The Formation Of Male And Female Friendships: A Longitudinal Study, H. Claire Rowsell, Joseph Ciarrochi, Patrick Heaven, Frank Deane

joseph Ciarrochi

The present study explored the relationship between emotion identification skill (EIS) and friendships in adolescence. Students from five Australian high schools completed questionnaires annually from Grade 8 to Grade 12 including subjective measures of EIS and a peer-based objective measure of social functioning (e.g., friendship nominations). The total sample of participants was 795 (406 males; 389 females) with 468 (225 males; 243 females) completing questionnaires in Grade 12. EIS in early adolescence was predictive of friendships for females in late adolescence. Specifically, girls starting out with low EIS in Grade 8 tended to have fewer female friendships and more male …

Aspartic Acid Racemisation Dating Of Mid-Holocene To Recent Estuarine Sedimentation In New South Wales, Australia: A Pilot Study, C Sloss, C Murray-Wallace, B Jones, T Wallin Jun 2013

Aspartic Acid Racemisation Dating Of Mid-Holocene To Recent Estuarine Sedimentation In New South Wales, Australia: A Pilot Study, C Sloss, C Murray-Wallace, B Jones, T Wallin

B. G. Jones

The degree of aspartic acid racemisation measured in radiocarbon-dated specimens of fossil estuarine molluscs, collected from Lake Illawarra, a Holocene barrier estuary in New South Wales, Australia, is evaluated in the context of results of laboratory-induced racemisation established in heating (simulated ageing) experiments. The general kinetic trend of aspartic acid racemisation in both heating experiments and fossil molluscs Anadara trapezia and Notospisula trigonella conforms to a model of apparent parabolic kinetics. Using the apparent parabolic kinetic model, numeric ages based on the degree of aspartic acid racemisation in the fossil molluscs have been calculated. An aminostratigraphy of the Lake Illawarra …

Statistical Indicators For Local Government Areas: A Case Study Of The Shoalhaven Lga, 1997, Nell Stetner-Houweling, David Steel, Greg Pullen Jun 2013

Statistical Indicators For Local Government Areas: A Case Study Of The Shoalhaven Lga, 1997, Nell Stetner-Houweling, David Steel, Greg Pullen

Professor David Steel

Decision makers and planers need to have relevant and reliable information to give a picture of how different areas are developing economically and socially. However, there is a perceived lack of timely and easily accessible data at the Local Government Area (LGA) level. This study produced a statistical profile of the Shoalhaven (LGA) by developing a conceptual framework, which represents the key economic, social, and population characteristics of the LGA. The statistical data available from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) at the level of the LGA, was investigated and summarised. Other sources of information available to create a statistical …

A Study On The Suitability Of Cable Models To Simulate Switching Transients In A 132 Kv Underground Cable, Muhamad Zalani Daud, P Ciufo, S Perera Dec 2012

A Study On The Suitability Of Cable Models To Simulate Switching Transients In A 132 Kv Underground Cable, Muhamad Zalani Daud, P Ciufo, S Perera

Dr Philip Ciufo

Switching transients resulting from the energisation of high voltage cable systems may have a significant effect on both the cables being switched as well as the power system components in the vicinity. The impacts of these transients on such cables are measured based on the stress arising as a result of the voltage and current peaks and the frequency of oscillatory transients. These quantities are typically obtained from a simulation by using a suitable cable model, normally with the capability to predict the transient behaviour in the range up to several 10 kHz. To obtain a cable model that enables …

Case Study On The Pattern Change In Arabidopsis Thaliana Intron Sequence, Ren Zhang, Rachel Caldwell, Yan-Xia Lin, Jinda Kongcharoen, Yiren Yang

Associate Professor Yan-Xia Lin

A large portion in eukaryotic genomes is introns but their function is not yet fully elucidated. The aims of this study are to employ the generalized Bernoulli modeling approach to estimate the change points based on GC distribution in intron sequences of Arabidopsis thaliana and to investigate whether there is any correlation between gene properties (the gene expression level and the protein function) and these intron pattern changes. The influence of the intron length and the number of GC on the intron sequence pattern changes is demonstrated. Among the random sampled intron sequences, 10.71% have been identified to have pattern …

Interrogating The Politics Of Gay/Lesbian Belonging In An Australian Country Town: A Case Study Of Daylesford, Victoria, And Local Responses To The Chillout Festival, Andrew Gorman-Murray, Gordon Waitt, Christopher Gibson

Chris Gibson

This paper examines the nature of gasy/lesbian belonging in Daylesford, an Australian country town, contributing to work on both gay/lesbian rural geographies and the politics of belonging. Daylesford hosts ChillOut, Australia's largest rural gay/lesbian festival, thus providing an apt lens for investigating gay/lesbian belonging in rural Australia. The festival, per se, is not analyzed, but instead local responses to ChillOut are interrogated below, particularly certain outcomes and debates following the 2006 festival. This paper begins with a discussion of the notions of belonging and the politics of belonging, and how these relate to gay/lesbian lives. This is followed by …
