Rediscovering Academic Libraries For Degree-Seeking Older Students, Marilia Antunez, Mary Aagard
Marilia Y. Antunez, MLS, MA
Increasingly higher numbers of older adults are returning to college campuses to earn degrees. Overwhelmingly, the literature that focuses on lifelong learning by older students has not incorporated degree-seeking students in their studies. This exploratory study is also driven by the role of libraries in serving this diverse student population. Estimation Of Uninsurance Rate: Comparison Of Four Estimation Methods, Jackie Zhang, Renee Hotchkiss, Thomas Wan
Thomas T.H. Wan
Objective: Although high percentage of the uninsured is an important public policy issue, the discrepancies in both state and national estimates of the numbers of uninsured are reported. This study compares four advanced estimation methods for uninsurance, by using Florida Health Insurance Survey data as an example. Design: The four predictive models include decision tree, neural network, general logistic regression, and two-stage logistic regression. Risk factors to uninsurance are identified. Population: The study sample comes from the Florida Health Insurance Study data collected for the Florida Agency of Health Care Administration in 1999, representing the first large-scale study designed exclusively …

Journalism In A Pr World, Michael I. Niman Ph.D.
Journalism In A Pr World, Michael I. Niman Ph.D.
Michael I Niman Ph.D.
Mike Niman discusses the future of journalism in a PR-dominated communication environment. In particular, he examines the migration of talent from journalism to the PR industry, the collapse of mainstream journalism and the role of an emergent alternative media as American journalism goes through metamorphosis from what it was to what it could become. Journalism is a social good that should equip people to understand and resist spin. Niman argues that mainstream American journalism, rather than rising to this challenge, has transparently succumbed to serving as an arm of the corporate PR industry, thus laying the groundwork for its own …
