Assessing The Impacts Of Library Instruction Sessions On Knowledge Acquisition And Retention In Biology Undergraduates, Aditi Bandyopadhyay

This study assessed the effectiveness of one-shot library instruction sessions on knowledge acquisition and retention in Biology undergraduate students. In early Spring 2018 semester, the students enrolled in six sessions of Bio 112 at Adelphi University attended library instruction classes to learn about scientific literature. One-shot library instruction sessions were conducted to teach students in each section how to identify research, review and popular science magazine articles. A post-instruction test was conducted in late April and early May, 2018, to determine whether the students retained information from library instruction classes. After several years of consistently offering the same one-shot session and library assignment in the First Year Experience seminar, feedback from several stakeholders in the course indicated it was time to change things up. The resulting lesson plan reached to serve information literacy outcomes while encouraging first year students to explore their new environment, engage with their city’s history, and learn to see research as a problem solving tool. Attendees will learn in what ways it was successful and what lessons were learned along the way.

In order to improve both library instruction and formative evaluation, EKU Libraries’ Public Services librarians located and adapted Samson & McCrea’s (2008) Peer Review of Teaching model (PROT). This presentation explained the three major elements of the PROT, what it specifically evaluates, how it was implemented, and what library instructors have gained from its use.
