Information literacy is more important than ever as students’ information sources rapidly expand and change. Fortunately, Messiah has numerous resources to support instructors and students in cutting through the clutter and improving writing. In this workshop we will discuss those supports as well as resources that can be applied to a wide array of writing assignments. Particularly, ways to scaffold information literacy initiatives with the help of online and library based tools. This workshop is facilitated by Brooke Dunbar-Treadwell, Director of Writing and Senior Lecturer of English and Beth Transue, Information Literacy Librarian.

During 2020-21 two business faculty from different institutions together with OER librarians, undergraduate students, and graduate assistants conspired to create a faculty-access-only test bank aligned to senior undergraduate-level open textbook, Strategic Management (2020) and AACSB Standards. Test bank development followed instructional and ethical practices for non-disposable assignments including faculty development of assignments, student ownership of student work, student “opt in” to go public, choice of no or some student attribution, financial incentives for various project participants, project MOUs, professional copyediting, and public release to vetted requestors. In the summer of 2020, librarians and undergraduates at Gettysburg College collaborated virtually to develop the DH Toolkit, a collection of digital learning objects for Digital Humanities tools and concepts. This lightning talk will discuss the collaborative framework for creating the toolkit and its future in DH pedagogy at Gettysburg.

They can gain real world experience from project collaboration with librarians. One way to reach out to students of computer science and engineering is to create a projects that centers on an application for libraries. A library construction project led our library’s Science & Engineering Department to take on a massive evaluation of the entire science print collection and reduce the collection footprint by at least 36% within a 12 month period. In order to improve access, reduce the footprint, strengthen the robustness of our collection, and complete the project in an effective and timely manner, a methodology of how to choose, select, evaluate, and move the entire collection of over 360,000 items had to be established and vetted. Every Fall, Cornell’s Mann Library holds a Local Food & Fiber Fair bringing together farmers and artisans from the local community and students, faculty and staff in the library lobby. In this talk, we will discuss efforts to transform this annual community festival from a mere transactional market to an experiential learning fair. By asking that all vendors incorporate an educational demonstration with their booth, the fair becomes a collection of active workshops where visitors can learn to spin wool, compost with worms, pickle produce, and inoculate logs while also supporting local merchants. What skills and network do undergraduates need to successfully join a research collaboration that matches their abilities and interests? During the 2015-16 academic year, librarians at the University of Rochester River Campus Libraries prototyped and refined Taking Control of Your Research Path, an eight-week/one-hour-per-week workshop. This workshop series covered a process for success: identifying one's own research interests, learning about the work of researchers and research groups, building skills in elevator pitches and informational interviewing, networking with peers advisors and finally interviewing with potential research groups. Learn how the SUNY Oswego biological sciences librarian, biological sciences faculty member, and biological sciences academic advisement coordinator have collaborated to improve biological sciences students’ writing and research skills by offering a writing workshop and writing labs. The writing workshop teaches how to write lab reports, evaluating and citing sources, and plagiarism. The writing labs allow students to learn research skills and to gain feedback on their lab report draft.

Librarian and faculty collaborations are the most essential component of any successful information literacy program. How can librarians entice faculty to collaborate? A wide range of outreach strategies have been chronicled in the literature, including brown bag lunch discussions, faculty focus groups, librarian-faculty grants, librarian participation in faculty governance, and workshops. Collaboration can also occur as a result of accreditation or program review requirements.
