Finding Our Focus: Encouraging Deep Work Within An Academic Library, Roriebeth Fredrich, Amanda Hahn

This presentation will discuss the application of principles from Cal Newport’s Deep Work within an academic library. An internal book club was the catalyst for individuals to experiment with different time management strategies and led to the implementation of a “Meeting-free Morning” for library faculty to cultivate deeper work.

Using the lenses of structural, systems, cultural, and political theory-based metaphors, a team of academic library leaders made informed and strategic decisions targeted at improving specific aspects of their organization. This resulted in improvements to the culture and structure of the organization as well as a better understanding of the political and systems influences at play. The lenses will be presented visually through illustrative metaphors such as through eyeglasses with a jungle in focus and described as applicable for most library organizations.

Podcasts have exploded in the media landscape and have become a mainstream platform for conversation. Through interviews with academic library professionals and leaders, the Librarian Lunch Break podcast provides opportunities for learning and professional development for both ourselves and our listeners. This poster will address the development of a podcast including the initial idea, the preparation, the interview process, and ultimately the deployment and promotion of the finished product. Championing information literacy has long been the mission of university librarians. When our University chose “Cultivating a Community of Research and Scholarship” as the focus of our Quality Enhancement Plan the Library was invited to join two interdisciplinary course development teams. Librarians collaborated with faculty from various academic departments to design two introductory research courses. These sequential courses lay the foundation of information literacy that springboards students to higher level research.

In 2010 Liberty University began a Patron-Driven Acquisition pilot program with ebrary. Since then, the program has grown dramatically. The presenters describe how the library uses past usage data to create a predictive formula for ebook use. New ebook titles were added to the program based on formula selections. Success of the formula was evaluated, and overall the results are positive. The presenters also explain how the library handles the purchasing and cataloging of the ebooks.

My colleagues and I assessed the workflow for data ingest at the Odum Archive at the University of North Carolina. We then made recommendations based on our analysis of the system. This poster discusses the most important recommendation that we gave the staff of the archive. We suggested that they create a script which would automate the steps in the workflow that involve a single point of failure. With the script, the single point of failure remains, but the risk of error has been significantly lessened.
