For well over a century, American biologists have built collection of plants, animals, fungi, insects, and other natural materials. Often, these collections serve as a record of the unique biodiversity of the local area and provide a record of change over time. Many taxonomic, genetic, and environmental discoveries lay waiting in the drawers and cupboards in which these specimens are stored. / / Uploading images of natural history specimens to Digital Commons allows them to be easily discovered in with a web search, leading the user back to the home collection. Since 2008 EIU has been digitizing ETDs and making them available via the library catalog, I-Share (the state of IL consortia catalog), and WorldCat. It was only after ETDs were included in the institutional repository (The Keep) that the majority of faculty became fully aware of how accessible these theses had become. This dawning realization led to important conversations with faculty and other stakeholders about concerns regarding publishing, grant approval, and patents. Following these discussions new embargo policies and workflows were developed. In this presentation, we will provide statistics showing increased access to ETDs due to the repository, and describe …

This presentation offers a case study on the approach taken by Booth Library, Eastern Illinois University, in regard to popular reading collections and readers' advisory work. Topics include undergraduate students' expectations for offerings in popular fiction and nonfiction in academic libraries, how recreational reading collections can support curricular needs, and how staff can become involved in collection promotion by means of training workshops, development of local exhibits and book lists, and more. I began working at Booth Library in February 2011 as liaison librarian for the Biological Sciences and Chemistry departments. Prior to my arrival, faculty of these departments had not been interacting actively with the library, and students from these departments had not been receiving library instruction geared toward their field of study. Considering discussions I had in library school and following suggestions from my fellow librarians, I created an action plan to introduce myself to these departments.

Historical fiction is currently undergoing a renaissance in popularity among readers. However, many questions surround this wide-ranging yet complex genre. How do readers and librarians define historical fiction? Who reads it, why do people choose it, and what do readers expect when they read a historical novel? How can it be found within library collections, given that it's such a broad category? Answers to these questions are discussed, along with an overview of the diverse subgenres of historical fiction.
