We discuss a project they conducted to identify whether adding table of contents and analytics to certain materials in the collection would increase circulation. They selected monographic series in the Q classification that were titled separately and five or six large series in the Ps for analyzing. The work resulted in significant increases in circulation of the materials ( anywhere from 59% to 186%). The work was labor intensive, but the increased use of the materials made it certainly worthwhile.
Understanding And Using Advanced Statistics, Jeremy Foster, Emma Barkus, Christian Yavorsky
Understanding And Using Advanced Statistics, Jeremy Foster, Emma Barkus, Christian Yavorsky
Emma Barkus
The spread of sophisticated computer packages and the machinery on which to run them has meant that procedures which were previously only available to experienced researchers with access to expensive machines and research students can now be carried out in a few seconds by almost every undergraduate. Understanding and Using Advanced Statistics provides the basis for gaining an understanding of what these analytic procedures do, when they should be used, and what the results provided signify. This comprehensive textbook guides students and researchers through the transition from simple statistics to more complex procedures with accessible language and illustration.

Advanced Meeting Facilitation Techniques, Carol A. Watson, Wendy Moore
Advanced Meeting Facilitation Techniques, Carol A. Watson, Wendy Moore
Carol A. Watson
As many librarians learned in last year's AALL presentation on facilitation, a well-facilitated meeting can transform a regular work session into an extraordinarily productive event. Participants learned that a well-crafted agenda, thoughtful ground rules, optimal meeting space, and detailed minutes can all set the stage for a successful meeting. However, meetings can still go awry. A poorly facilitated meeting can make everyone dread meetings even if the meeting has been well-planned. Managing or facilitating behaviors is the final essential ingredient for success. Have you ever been in a meeting that is monopolized by one individual? Or someone offers a suggestion …

PowerPoint slides of a talk given at the 35th IAMSLIC Annual Conference & 13th Biennial EURASLIC Conference, September 27-October 1, 2009, Provinciaal Hof, Brugge, Belgium. Abstract of accompanying paper: Open access to scholarly content is increasing, and will continue to do so. This phenomenon is driving the economics of publishing to change dramatically. The question is: what will the economics of open access look like when this correction settles into a sustainable model? I will cover some of the ideas that have recently been articulated by economists, information professionals and others regarding retooling the evolving publishing business model, and will …

Today’s first year college students arrive on campus underprepared for the academic demands that await them. Despite the dedicated efforts of high school librarians, research continues to illustrate that students lack basic information literacy skills crucial to their academic success in higher education. In this session high school and academic librarians will explore this issue with participants to identify key deficits in students’ 21st Century Skills. The presenters will share their insights on college professors’ expectations and offer best practices for educating tomorrow’s college students. Presenters will provide ideas for lesson plans and assessment; actual college assignments will be shared.

Collecting Campus Culture: Collaborations And Collisions, Stephanie Davis-Kahl, Meg Miner
Meg Miner
[Note: This poster was revised by Meg Miner from an April 2011 work presented by Davis-Kahl and Miner to ACRL.]
In 2007, a library at a small liberal arts college jumpstarted two initiatives that set two colleagues on a parallel path to collecting, archiving and digitizing campus content, such as student and faculty scholarship and creative works, internal publications, minutes of key committees, historical information, and other materials. An archivist and special collections librarian and a scholarly communications librarian, were tasked, respectively, with creating and implementing a records management program and a scholarly communications program, including coordination of a new …

SIT has long been involved with the nexus between culture and communications. Historically, this has caused us to ask how we can “properly” and “effectively” navigate in cultures that are foreign to us. More recently, however, communication platforms are changing and therefore, we see a rising need for rethinking some of the cross cultural models in use. This session will thus explore the changing nexus between cultures, communication, and technology. Our context will consider questions such as how students’ experiences are different because of increased use of technology, how social media affects cross cultural experiences, and the degree to which …
West Africa & The Rise Of Asante: Rivers Of (Black) Gold And The Proto-Globalization Of Labor, Jon D. Carlson
West Africa & The Rise Of Asante: Rivers Of (Black) Gold And The Proto-Globalization Of Labor, Jon D. Carlson
Jon D. Carlson
This paper examines the concept of the “external arena” and the role of the “information network” in the expansion of the world-system and absorption of new regions. I reference research on nested networks of interaction, and echo criticisms that the impact of myth and misinformation has been underappreciated as an element of incorporation. Alteration occurs well-prior to the point at which most world-systems literature considers a region incorporated. I develop the concept of “protoglobalization” to characterize this early, overlooked social, economic, and political change. West Africa offers a rare case of external state creation and resistance to European systemic expansion. …
