The Literature Review: A Learning Tool, Olga Koz
The Literature Review: A Learning Tool, Olga Koz
Transforming Libraries for Graduate Students
Literature reviews are the source of constant stress among doctoral and master level students and, at the same time, the most popular assignment among instructors. After teaching numerous workshops, webinars, Literature Review Bootcamps, and co-teaching “literature review modules,” I decided to create an interactive web-based learning tool, the Literature Review Design (LRD).
You are welcome to use it before the workshop. Access URL:http://libguides.kennesaw.edu/LRDesign
During this workshop, I will share with you the information about the tool and demonstrate how it was used as a complementary learning aid to scaffold instruction and within the KSU Interactive Research Method Lab. You …

Professional Development Opportunities For Graduate Students: The Launch Of A Speaker Series, Kara Flynn, Lori Birrell
Transforming Libraries for Graduate Students
Eager to provide graduate students the opportunity to develop themselves professionally, University Libraries in partnership with the Graduate School and International Education initiated a graduate student speaker series in 2018. The series, now in its second year, provides graduate students a forum in which to present their research- whether a finished product or work in progress- to the university community. To be eligible to speak in the series, each student must have used resources from the Special Collections Division as part of their work. This initiative highlights the research graduate students are engaged in, and draws attention to the university’s …

Librarian At The Colloquium: Delivering Unique Library Content For Phd Students, Susan Franzen
Transforming Libraries for Graduate Students
PhD students have unique needs and require different resources and services from the library than undergraduates, which is especially true of professionals in a nursing program. As clinicians, many do not have experience with the research and writing intensive requirements of a doctoral degree. The majority have not taken classes for years, and their master’s degrees were more hands-on, clinically-based. They often do not feel confident in their ability to search the literature, read closely, or write expansively. A unique avenue through which to meet their needs and share library resources is a PhD colloquium course.
Students take the colloquium …

Data Management And The Ir: A Collaborative Approach, Josh Cromwell
Data Management And The Ir: A Collaborative Approach, Josh Cromwell
Digital Commons Southeastern User Group 2016
As researchers seek to find ways to manage and openly share their data in compliance with grant requirements, many libraries have developed new services to support these researchers. In this session, we will discuss some of the different strategies that libraries are using to support data management, as well as the role that the IR may (or may not) play in these programs. While there is certainly not a one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to library-led data initiatives, this conversation will allow participants to share ideas and workflows that will hopefully provide all attendees with new concepts to apply either …

Transforming Libraries for Graduate Students
George Washington University Libraries were tasked with transforming support for graduate students while taking into account increasing numbers of online students, off-campus programs, and students working full-time. In addition, due to librarian turnover and other factors, we needed to accomplish our goal with a reduced workforce and without reducing services and instruction to our undergraduate population. Our solution focuses our graduate instruction on in-person workshops and digital objects (research guides and “How-Do-I?” videos), along with a “toolkit” with scripts, handouts, presentations, and outlines so that, while one librarian may be the expert (e.g. citation management), any librarian can have the …

Transforming Libraries for Graduate Students
Abstract:
While masters- and doctoral-level graduate students in the social sciences are likely to have past undergraduate experience in doing secondary research such as literature reviews, they often have minimal to no experience in collecting and/or analyzing data (be it quantitative or qualitative in nature), a requisite for their completing theses or dissertations. Likewise, they are likely to be crunched for time and money resources that prohibits ambitious collections of new data, and thus they need guidance in finding existing data and accessible research software/tools for their original analyses. This presentation will give an overview of the specialized services I, …

Unique Library Services For Graduate Students: Support Throughout The Graduate Lifecycle, Susan Smith, Erin M. O'Toole, Rebecca Barham
Transforming Libraries for Graduate Students
In response to changing needs of graduate students, the University of North Texas Libraries have created unique services, spaces, and instruction. The transformation began with the recent creation of the Library Research Support Services (LRSS) department, a department focused on serving graduate students. The department quickly identified needs that fell into two categories: everyday needs and academic lifecycle needs. Everyday needs of graduate students include quiet study and writing space, writing assistance, and research assistance. Academic lifecycle needs are different, as needs vary depending on where a student is in the cycle: new graduate student, graduate student completing coursework, graduate …

Interlibrary Loan departments are no stranger to collaboration between campuses. Therefore, when the consolidation of the two institutions of Kennesaw State University and Southern Polytechnic State University was announced, their respective interlibrary loan departments rose to the challenge with - if not enthusiasm - optimism and the willingness to try new ideas and strategies to merge the two units. This presentation will cover the alternatives considered, strategies chosen, and the implementation process undertaken to create a unified interlibrary loan department across two campuses and four libraries using Atlas' ILLiad software. We will cover not only policy decisions but workflow procedures …

Since its creation in 2004, GIL Express has attempted to supplement traditional ILL services by providing a faster avenue for patrons to request and receive books. However, operating similar services from two different departments can lead to confusion for patrons and headaches for staff. For this project, we will analyze the methods employed by other schools in the USG system to improve the coordination of GIL Express and ILL services. We will present our findings as well as evaluate alternative solutions to streamline the process for both patrons and staff.
