Albertsons Library has successfully leveraged the use mobile devices for helping students learn research skills. Librarians are now going to classrooms and teaching two instruction sessions — 1) finding information and 2) evaluating information. The library sessions provide hands-on, active learning opportunities for student teams, built around the use of iPads to explore library resources. In fall 2012, this included instruction to seventy-four classes in Boise State's "University Foundations 100" course, the first course in our general education program. The material presented in this workshop will help guide you towards new ideas for instruction that use active learning and constructivist principles, particularly how they apply to mobile devices and mobile learning. Meeting your customers where they are has taken on a whole new meaning in the 2010s. Join Amy Vecchione, of Boise State University, and Tobie Garrick, of Boise Public Library, as they explore ways to provide improved reference outcomes for customers through mobile technology. Each librarian has implemented new reference tools for customers including: connecting users to reference tools with QR (Quick Response) codes, roving reference with mobile devices, SMS reference, and mobile database instruction during the reference process. Participants will learn about barriers, how each librarian overcame them, and how mobile reference can be improved.
