Aggregated Interdisciplinary Databases And The Needs Of Undergraduate Researchers, Barbara Fister, Amy Fry, Julie Gilbert Oct 2013

Aggregated Interdisciplinary Databases And The Needs Of Undergraduate Researchers, Barbara Fister, Amy Fry, Julie Gilbert

Amy Fry

After seeing growing frustration among inexperienced undergraduate researchers searching a popular aggregated interdisciplinary database, the authors questioned whether the leading interdisciplinary databases are serving undergraduates' needs. As a preliminary exploration of this question, the authors queried vendors, analyzed their marketing materials, surveyed librarians and students, and examined what titles were being downloaded at 14 liberal arts institutions. Although librarians are satisfied with these databases, and vendors intend to continue the trend of adding more content, actual usage patterns suggest that these databases are not serving the purpose one might expect. Librarians should learn more about user experiences in order to …

Framing Photographs, Denying Archives: The Difficulty Of Focusing On Archival Photographs, Tim Schlak

Tim Schlak

This article pursues the varying understandings of the photograph in archival literature. An in-depth review of the scholarship uncovers several possible reasons why archivists and those writing about photographic archives apparently continue to struggle with the photograph, including: the sheer difficulty that photographs as an elusive medium present; past debates about photography in art history, history, and archival literature; and the challenges that the photograph as an evasive document presents to the contradictory nature of archives themselves and to conceptions of archival science. Having evolved from an understanding of photographs that conflated content with meaning to postmodernist notions of contingent …

Wollongong: From Bunker To Beauty, Felicity Mcgregor May 2008

Wollongong: From Bunker To Beauty, Felicity Mcgregor

Felicity McGregor

A transformation is taking place at the University of Wollongong Library. An extension to the building is adding 2,000 square metres of space across three floors and visually changing the façade from a heavy bunker to a light-filled, transparent space. As the extension project progresses, the impact on both the exterior and interior are increasingly evident. The pebblecrete slabs that were suspended over the top floor and appeared to press the brick walls into the ground have been removed. A number of small shrubs and trees obscuring the building have gone. A soaring portico roof now provides shade for the …

The Mahout On The Elephant: How The Knowledge Management Practices Of The Wellington Campus Library Enriches Cput Libraries, Michiel Moll, Lynn Kleinveldt

Michiel E Moll

The importance of knowledge management in institutions is widely acknowledged. However, the influence of progressive knowledge management practices in one branch of the organization on the organization as a whole is the theme of this paper. The MJL Olivier Library (Wellington campus library) of the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) is one of nine branches, with Cape Town and Bellville being the largest. However the knowledge management practices of Wellington with particular reference to knowledge creation, knowledge sharing and knowledge capturing leads to Wellington being seen as an “innovation champion” (Glynn, 1996) within the CPUT Academic Information Services (AIS). …

The Impact Of Locally Developed Electronic Resource Management Systems, Marie Kennedy Dec 2007

The Impact Of Locally Developed Electronic Resource Management Systems, Marie Kennedy

Marie R. Kennedy

As libraries dramatically increased their numbers of licensed electronic resources in the 1990s, such as online journals and databases, they realized the need for a record-keeping system that would help manage the details of acquiring and maintaining them. Since no off-the-shelf product existed, some libraries developed their own tools to manage electronic resources. This chapter discusses the development of locally designed electronic resource management systems; the process of developing the tools at several academic institutions is traced, with a focus on the aspects of the systems unique to each university. Locally developed electronic resource management systems have lead academic institutions …
