Entropy In Pynchon's "Entropy" And Lefebvre's The Production Of Space, Jason Snart
Entropy In Pynchon's "Entropy" And Lefebvre's The Production Of Space, Jason Snart
Jason A Snart
In his paper, "Entropy in Pynchon's 'Entropy' and Lefebvre's The Production of Space," Jason Snart examines Thomas Pynchon's short story "Entropy" for the ways in which it deals with the kinds of disorder(s) associated with entropy as a thermodynamic and informational concept. Those concepts are installed as a framework within which to consider cultural studies work like Henri Lefebfre's thought in his The Production of Space and Ludwig von Bertalanffy's general systems theory and themodynamics: disorder is rendered not as confusion, but rather as a state of potential energy and productivity and Lefebvre's and Bertalanffy's concepts serve to show how …

Concealed Pseudo-Clefts, Ileana Paul
Concealed Pseudo-Clefts, Ileana Paul
Ileana Paul
This paper argues for a pseudo-cleft analysis of so-called clefts in Malagasy. Evidence is presented that the clefted element is in fact the matrix (copular) predicate and that the pre-suppositional clause is a headless relative in subject position. The proposed pseudo-cleft structure accounts for the focus interpretation of this construction, due to the underlying presence of a definite description in the subject position.

Hybrid Organizations And The Alignment Of Interests: The Case Of Fannie Mae And Freddie Mac, Jonathan Koppell
Jonathan GS Koppell
This article explores the political influence of government-sponsored enterprises (GSEs). Using Congress's overhaul of the regulatory infrastructure for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac as a case study, the article presents two principal findings: (1) The characteristics that distinguish government-sponsored enterprises from traditional government agencies and private companies endow Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac with unique political resources; and (2) the alignment of interest groups around Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac is subject to strategic manipulation by the GSEs. A triangular model of this alignment is proposed and employed to analyze the legislative outcome. The case has implications for students of …

For The Record: An Oral History Of Rochester, New York Newsworkers, Bonnie Brennen
For The Record: An Oral History Of Rochester, New York Newsworkers, Bonnie Brennen
Bonnie Brennen
For the Record focuses on the experiences of journalists, primarily in their own words, who worked in Rochester, New York, on the Gannett owned Democrat & Chronicle and the Times Union. While there are occasional glimpses back to the beginning of the twentieth century and conversations regarding current newsroom policies by those who are still involved in the business, most of the material in this study centers on Gannett during the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s-a period that may be seen as pivotal to the development of the Gannett Company. Although there is an enormous wealth of material available on the …

Working Time In Comparative Perspective: Volume Ii - Life-Cycle Working Time And Nonstandard Work, Susan Houseman, Alice Nakamura
Susan N. Houseman
The chapters explore an expanded set of working-time issues, which may be loosely grouped under two topics: 1) working time over the life cycle, and 2) nonstandard work arrangements (e.g., temporary work, job sharing and moonlighting).

Prime-Time Players And Powerful Prose: The Role Of Women In The 1997-1998 Television Season, Martha Lauzen, David Dozier, Manda Hicks
Manda V. Hicks
Within a theoretical framework that integrates the influence of market forces and perceived power of creative individuals, this study considers the empirical relations between women working behind the scenes and on screen in prime time. Using the top 64 prime-time series from the first 12 weeks of the 1997-1998 television season, this study specifically examines the dynamic between the presence of women working behind the scenes and use of powerful language by female characters. Powerful language attributes included the use of directives, interruptions, first words, and last words. The study found that the presence of female executive producers and writers …

Diplomacy Of Conscience: Amnesty International And Changing Human Rights Norms, Ann Marie Clark
Diplomacy Of Conscience: Amnesty International And Changing Human Rights Norms, Ann Marie Clark
Ann Marie Clark
Diplomacy of Conscience traces Amnesty International's efforts to strengthen both popular human rights awareness and international law against torture, disappearances, and political killings. Drawing on primary interviews and archival research, Ann Marie Clark posits that Amnesty International's strenuously cultivated objectivity gave the group political independence and allowed it to be critical of all governments violating human rights. Its capacity to investigate abuses and interpret them according to international standards helped it foster consistency and coherence in new human rights law. Generalizing from this study, Clark builds a theory of the autonomous role of nongovernmental actors in the emergence of international …
The Effect Of Attending A Small Class In The Early Grades On College-Test Taking And Middle School Test Results: Evidence From Project Star, Alan Krueger, Diane Schanzenbach
The Effect Of Attending A Small Class In The Early Grades On College-Test Taking And Middle School Test Results: Evidence From Project Star, Alan Krueger, Diane Schanzenbach
Diane Whitmore Schanzenbach
This paper provides a long-term follow-up analysis of students who participated in the Tennessee STAR experiment. In this experiment, students and their teachers were randomly assigned to small, regular-size, or regular-size classes with a teacher aide in the first four years of school. We analyse the effect of past attendance in small classes on student test scores and whether they took the ACT or SAT college entrance exam. Attending a small class in the early grades is associated with an increased likelihood of taking a college-entrance exam, especially among minority students, and somewhat higher test scores.

No More Tours: How Library Tours Of The Past Become Today's Celebrations, Linda Walton, Teresa Westphal, Brian Lauer, Kurt Munson, James Shedlock

In 1999, Northwestern University's Galter Health Sciences Library redesigned the library orientation program for first-year medical students. Surveys indicated tours were ineffective and students retained little of the information presented. Furthermore, the tour was not related to the student's curriculum and did not reinforce their learning objectives. As a replacement, the library staff developed a self-directed two-hour library open house. Stations throughout the library showcased the library staff, services, and resources, focusing on the first-year student curriculum. A follow-up survey found this redesign more useful and relevant to the students' course work, indicating libraries should be creating more interactive tours …

Positivism-Plus: A Constructivist Approach To Teaching Psychopharmacology To Counselors, Cecile Brennan, Elliott Ingersoll
Positivism-Plus: A Constructivist Approach To Teaching Psychopharmacology To Counselors, Cecile Brennan, Elliott Ingersoll
Cecile Brennan
In this positivism-plus approach, the chemical and neurobiological bases of psychopharmacology constitute a pervasive, positivist construction of a reality that influences client behavior. However, is it argued that this biological version of reality must be integrated into the work of counseling, that is, it must be adapted to the environmental and intrapsychic contexts that clients and counselors co-construct. This chapter reviews the relationships among the medical model, constructivism, and counselor training, describes the general components of the psychopharmacology course, then discusses more specifically the relationship between the positivist and positivist-plus elements
