The Term Structure Of Interest Rates And The Mexican Economy, Jorge Gonzalez, Roger Spencer, Daniel Walz
The Term Structure Of Interest Rates And The Mexican Economy, Jorge Gonzalez, Roger Spencer, Daniel Walz
Jorge Gonzalez
Can the yield spread, which has been found to predict with surprising accuracy the movement of key macroeconomic variables of developed countries, also predict such variables for a developing country experiencing economic turmoil? This article presents empirical results that suggest significant forecasting ability for the yield spread for segments of the Mexican economy during the 1995–1997 period of economic volatility. The actual and predicted variable changes sometimes conflict with those experienced by developed countries in part because of the unusually close relationship between the Mexican Treasury and the Banco de México. Consequently, analysts and policy officials may exploit the forecast …

The Evolution Of An Issue: The Rise And Decline Of Affirmative Action, Euel Elliott, Andrew Ewoh
Andrew I.E. Ewoh
This article examines the development of the affirmative action issue since its inception, and compares its dynamics and evolution with the broader civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s. It identifies and discusses three periods or phases of the affirmative action regime. This vein of research helps provide at least a partial explanation for why policies in related areas of civil rights may produce different outcomes, and explicates the broad resistance to key elements of the anti-discrimination effort of the last three decades. A tentative model based on the congruence of the policy stance of political institutions to public …

The Church As Counterculture, Michael Budde
The Church As Counterculture, Michael Budde
Michael Budde
The question, "What does it mean to be 'the church'?" has always been among the most controversial and of vital concern to political, economic, and ecclesial leaders alike. How it is answered influences whether Christianity will be a force for legitimating or subverting existing secular relations of power, influence, and privilege. The Church as Counterculture enters the debates on Christian identity, purpose, and organization by calling for the churches to reclaim their roles as "communities of disciples"-distinct and distinctive groups formed by the priorities and practices of Jesus-to constitute a countercultural reality and challenge to secular society and existing power …
A Changing Bridge For Changing Times: The History Of The West Boston Bridge, 1793-1907, Dale H. Freeman
A Changing Bridge For Changing Times: The History Of The West Boston Bridge, 1793-1907, Dale H. Freeman
Dale H. Freeman
Master of Arts Thesis, June 2000: This thesis examines the construction in 1793 of the West Boston Bridge, the first bridge to span the Charles River between Boston and Cambridge, and its successors at the same location in 1854 and then 1907 (the Longfellow Bridge). It is a study of the impact of these bridges on the commercial development and urban settlement patterns of both Cambridge and Boston, and it sets the construction of each bridge in the historical context of the period in which each was built. The thesis utilizes a variety of primary sources drawn from the Cambridge …

Paul A Soderdahl
In 1998 The University of Iowa Libraries was the recipient of a grant from the Library of Congress/Ameritech National Digital Library Competition in support of a project to digitise a portion of its unique and extensive Redpath Chautauqua Collection. Although the staff of the Information Arcade at The University of Iowa Libraries has extensive experience in instructional technology, this was the first opportunity for them to engage in the digitisation of a large text collection of rare materials. This article will describe the processes undertaken in the project as well as the challenges when the theory of how to approach …

Reclaiming Evolution: A Marxist-Institutionalist Dialogue On Social Change, Howard Sherman, William Dugger
Reclaiming Evolution: A Marxist-Institutionalist Dialogue On Social Change, Howard Sherman, William Dugger
HOWARD J SHERMAN
In this unique book, Howard Sherman and William M.Dugger engage in a dialogue on social evolution from Institutionalist and Marxist perspectives, each representing one side. It is their intention to explore the way society develops using the equally radical, but very different approaches of Thorstein Veblen and Karl Marx. The dialogue proceeds with a series of questions - each answered from the two perspectives. Beginning with an intellectual history and definition, Reclaiming Evolution examines social evolution in terms of causal elements; economic relations, technology, enabling myth and political relations, and social processes; structural change, social tension and social conflict. It …

The Baldwin Effect: An Archeology, David Depew
The Baldwin Effect: An Archeology, David Depew
David J Depew
Abstract: “The Baldwin effect” stands for a wide variety of ways in which learn ing can be conceived as guiding adap tive evolution ary change. An analysis of the history of this notion reveals that it does not reliably refer either to a theory-neutral empirical phenomenon or to a single theoretical hypothesis. On the contrary, articulations of the general idea depend on distinctive, but in commensurable, theoretical backgrounds. In reconstructing the conceptual history of the Baldwin effect I hope to support contemporary explorations of idea by encouraging the articulation of new theoretical frameworks in which it might make sense. I …

Caring For The Elderly In Japan And The U.S.: Practices And Policies. Edited By Susan Orpett Long, Susan Long
Susan O Long
n an era of changing demographics and values, this volume provides a cross-national and interdisciplinary perspective on the question of who cares for and about the elderly. The contributors reflect on research studies, experimental programmes and personal experience in Japan and the United States to explicitly compare how policies, practices and interpretations of elder care are evolving at the turn of the century.

This thesis explores the nature of voice in Malagasy, a language spoken in Madagascar. In chapter 2, it is claimed that different passives promote arguments from different structural positions. Evidence is provided for a particular position, [Spec, v2P], where a certain class of elements (“displaced themes”) may be generated. One particular passive, the aprefix, promotes to subject elements in this position. In chapter 3, arguments are presented in favour of a structural analysis of circumstantial topic (CT). CT morphology licenses all arguments of the verb. Due to a requirement that all clauses have a subject (the Extended Projection Principle), some …

On May 26 1996, two demolitions experts from Morrison-Knudsen set charges under the gigantic stacks of the former Bunker Hill smelter in Kellogg, Idaho. A contest was held to determine who would push the button and send the stacks plummeting to the ground. Lining the freeway, front porches, and rooftops of the denuded hillsides were thousands of people who came to watch the spectacle. Among them were two important factions in the community: One faction comprised those who were there to cheer the destruction of the corporate and industrial symbol that to many of the mining and union families of …

Clusterin Is An Atp-Independent Chaperone With Very Broad Substrate Specificity That Stabilizes Stressed Proteins In A Folding-Competent State, Stephen Poon, Simon Easterbrook-Smith, Mark Rybchyn, John Carver, Mark Wilson
Mark R Wilson
We recently reported that the ubiquitous, secreted protein clusterin has chaperone activity in vitro [Humphreys et al. (1999) J. Biol. Chem. 274, 6875−6881]. In this study, we demonstrate that clusterin (i) inhibits stress-induced precipitation of a very broad range of structurally divergent protein substrates, (ii) binds irreversibly via an ATP-independent mechanism to stressed proteins to form solubilized high molecular weight complexes, (iii) lacks detectable ATPase activity, (iv) when acting alone, does not effect refolding of stressed proteins in vitro, and (v) stabilizes stressed proteins in a state competent for refolding by heat shock protein 70 (HSP70). Furthermore, we show that, …

Redesigning Freshman Seminar Library Instruction Based On Information Competencies, Elizabeth Parang, Melinda Raine, Trisha Medeiros

During summer 1997, instruction librarians at Pepperdine University's Payson Library began restructuring Freshman seminar library instruction sessions because they observed that students were not acquiring the needed library and information literacy skills. Too much material was being presented in too short a time with no opportunity for hands-on experience. Taking advantage of the opportunity for Web-based instruction, students now tour the library and learn catalog searching skills at their own pace outside of class. Librarians reinforce vital library skills and introduce the students to a general database during classroom instruction which includes hands-on experience. Evaluation indicates that students completing the …
