The Construction Of The Right To Development: The United Nations, Human Rights, And Economic Development, Nader Izzat Said
Dissertations
The origins of human rights are of interest to social scientists. This study focuses on the construction process of the right to development as related to the UN. The emphasis is on the claims-making processes surrounding the creation of the right to development. To understand these processes, a theoretical framework has been developed. This framework combines interactionism, collective-behavior approaches, a dialectical theory of law-creation, and a capitalist world-economy theory. It is expected that this theoretical framework will explain the specific, organizational, and structural processes that led to the creation of the right to development.

Entrepreneurial Activities Of Homeless Men, Steven Balkin
Entrepreneurial Activities Of Homeless Men, Steven Balkin
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Encouraging and assisting homeless people to become self-employed provides a way for some of them to increase their incomes, and may help close the gap between the cost of housing and labor market earnings. A survey of operators of homeless shelters was conducted to determine the types of work activities that adult homeless men participate in. Self-employment was found to be a common activity for a substantial proportion of adult homeless men; and a preferred mode of employment for many. Advantages and disadvantages of such an approach are discussed. Several program models are described which can be used to enhance …

"On time and under budget: It's not often that one can say that about a government-sponsored and government-built project, but to date, that is exactly the status of the Rhode Island Convention Center. Assuming this pace of development continues, the center will open in December 1993 below the $290 million projected cost."

A. Philip Randolph And Boston's African-American Railroad Worker, James R. Green, Robert C. Hayden
Trotter Review
On October 8, 1988, a group of retired Pullman car porters and dining car waiters gathered in Boston's Back Bay Station for the unveiling of a larger-than-life statue of A. Philip Randolph. During the 1920s and 1930s, Randolph was a pioneering black labor leader who led the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters. He came to be considered the "father of the modern civil rights movement" as a result of his efforts to desegregate World War II defense jobs and the military services. Randolph's importance as a militant leader is highlighted by a quote inscribed on the base of the statue …

Black Pink Collar Workers: Arduous Journey From Field And Kitchen To Office, Judith B. Bremner
Black Pink Collar Workers: Arduous Journey From Field And Kitchen To Office, Judith B. Bremner
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
The black female workers' journey from field to office was a long and arduous one. This paper examines the transition of black women from agricultural laborers to pink collar workers during the period 1900 to 1980. More black women than white women have had to work in paid employment in order to maintain their families economically. Discrimination against black pink collar workers in career advancement and the better-paying positions, is especially critical because so many black families are female-headed households in need of all the economic resources that the mother-breadwinner can obtain.

Does Sex Discrimination Exist In Faculty Salaries At Western Kentucky University? An Empirical Examination Of The Wage Gap, Reed Vesey
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
This thesis examines wage differentials between male and female faculty salaries at Western Kentucky University. A human capital model of salary determination is examined by using regression analysis on relevant personal and job characteristics of faculty members. A large portion of the wage gap between men and women is explained through differences in the personal and job characteristics. A portion of the wage gap remains unexplained, however, the probability of discrimination playing a substantial role in salary is very small.

"In the past decade, we have moved railroad tracks and built a new railroad station; we are moving two rivers; and now we plan to move an interstate highway. These were the opening remarks of Tom Deller, associate director of planning for the city of Providence to planners here for the annual meeting of the New England chapter of the American Planning Association. Just the thought of these words is mind-boggling."

Organization Development And Community Development: True Soulmates Or Uneasy Bedfellows?, Darlyne Bailey, Pranab Chatterjee
Organization Development And Community Development: True Soulmates Or Uneasy Bedfellows?, Darlyne Bailey, Pranab Chatterjee
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Our paper is written to express both strong dissent from and partial support of Dr. Packard's article "Organization Development Technologies in Community Development: A Case Study." Beginning with a summation of the article, this paper introduces the main area of contention, provides a vignette to illustrate key points and concludes with affirmation of the need for reconciling the differences between organizational development (OD) and community development (CD) as two systems of planned change.

Latinas And The Massachusetts Employment And Training (Et) Choices Program: Factors Associated With Participation And Outcomes For Boston Latinas In Et, Miren Uriarte
Gastón Institute Publications
This report presents the results of an assessment of the participation and outcomes of Latinos in the Massachusetts Employment and Training (ET) Choices Program. From the start of the ET program, there has been evidence that Latinos participate at rates comparable to that of other groups, but that their outcomes in terms of job placements and wages fall well below the outcome rates of any other group of participants. The main goal of this report is to ascertain the experience of Latino participants in ET and the individual and program factors that present barriers to their successful participation in this …
Evaluation Of The Impact Of Wisconsin's Learnfare Experiment On The School Attendance Of Teenagers Receiving Afdc (1992), John Pawasarat, Lois M. Quinn, Frank Stetzer
Evaluation Of The Impact Of Wisconsin's Learnfare Experiment On The School Attendance Of Teenagers Receiving Afdc (1992), John Pawasarat, Lois M. Quinn, Frank Stetzer
ETI Publications
In June 1988 the Wisconsin legislature authorized that an independent evaluation of the state’s “Learnfare” experiment be conducted, and in July 1989 the Employment and Training Institute secured the contract for this evaluation after a competitive bidding process. This report meets the requirement of the contract to provide a report on the state’s activities during the first two years of the “Learnfare” federal waiver. The “Learnfare” evaluation design approved by the state and federal governments in December, 1989, for completion on June 30, 1993, is testing four main hypotheses: that “Learnfare” increases the total school attendance of teenage AFDC recipients, …

The Labor Market Experience Of Young African American Men From Low-Income Families In Wisconsin (1992), Harold M. Rose, Ronald S. Edari, John Pawasarat, Lois M. Quinn
ETI Publications
This research study provides empirical data on the employment experience of young African American men who entered the Wisconsin labor force in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Its goal was to examine the early labor force experience of 17,216 young men from poor families, matching state wage databases against individuals identified in the state income maintenance system (i.e., households applying for or receiving food stamps, AFDC or medical assistance, 1987-1989). The study analyzed 36,005 jobs held by the study population over five quarters. The vast majority of African American men in their early twenties who were employed were relegated …
The Employment Status Of Young Adult Black Males Residing In Poverty Households: Recent Milwaukee County Experience, Harold M. Rose
The Employment Status Of Young Adult Black Males Residing In Poverty Households: Recent Milwaukee County Experience, Harold M. Rose
ETI Publications
Harold Rose, UWM professor of Geography and Urban Studies, examined the findings of the Employment and Training Institute analysis of employment held by 8,479 young African American males from Wisconsin families seeking or receiving public assistance (AFDC, food stamps, and/or medical assistance) in 1987-1989. Rose discusses the findings in light of a wide variety of perspectives by drawing on national literature addressing social and economic changes in the 1980s, welfare dependency, conditions in inner city Milwaukee, labor force participation rates, extended presence of young black males in parental households, employment sectors, subpopulations’ earnings history, attachment to the labor force, school …
The Labor Market Experience Of Young African American Men From Low-Income Households, Ronald S. Edari
The Labor Market Experience Of Young African American Men From Low-Income Households, Ronald S. Edari
ETI Publications
The target population for this study is 5,800 young African American males living in households where one or more members applied for public assistance. Their employment records are tracked for 39 months. The critical question was to examine what happened to these youths upon reaching maturity. Dr. Ronald Edari, UWM Professor of Sociology and Urban Studies, observes that while modest in scope, this paper is intended to counter-balance in some measure the recent voluminous literature on work and welfare, whose conservative thrust has tended to focus on the debilitating characteristics of individuals rather than industries. The paper examines employment, earnings …
From Libertarianism To Egalitarianism, Justin Schwartz
From Libertarianism To Egalitarianism, Justin Schwartz
Justin Schwartz
A standard natural rights argument for libertarianism is based on the labor theory of property: the idea that I own my self and my labor, and so if I "mix" my own labor with something previously unowned or to which I have a have a right, I come to own the thing with which I have mixed by labor. This initially intuitively attractive idea is at the basis of the theories of property and the role of government of John Locke and Robert Nozick. Locke saw and Nozick agreed that fairness to others requires a proviso: that I leave "enough …

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

Dr. Professor Mommy: Working Mothers' Gender Role Self Images In The University Community, Dawn Renee Krywanio
Masters Theses
A common misperception exists that working mothers experience their professional lives differently than other working women. This is often the basis for differential treatment of mothers in the workplace. This thesis describes gender role self image among university women in administration, faculty, and staff positions who are also parents; it relates to professional relationship satisfaction in the workplace. Data were collected through the use of open ended surveys of 185 female employees at Eastern Illinois University, follow up interviews, and a Likert scale survey within the same population. Content analysis of the data and qualitative results are the descriptive basis …
