A Digital Platform For College Students In The Ghanaian Rental Housing Market, Balchisu Adam Miss
A Digital Platform For College Students In The Ghanaian Rental Housing Market, Balchisu Adam Miss
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
This paper reviewed the literature on rental housing market services in Ghana to provide the foundation in addressing the housing challenge in the country with specific reference to students. Affordability and availability of housing have been a major development challenge. However, search frictions in the rental housing market exacerbate the housing problem for college students in Ghana. The proposed project seeks to address the search friction in the rental housing market through a business start-up. The goal of the business project is to develop a digital platform that provides listing services for the Ghanaian rental housing market to reduce the …

Creating Safer Routes To School For Fairfield Court Elementary Students, Lara Handwerker
Master of Urban and Regional Planning Capstone Projects
The purpose of this plan is to conduct a Walkabout study for Fairfield Court Elementary School in Richmond, Virginia through the guidelines of the Safe Routes to School program. The plan seeks to address infrastructural and non-infrastructural issues relating to traffic, safety, and travel routes for students who walk and bike to the school. The plan first identifies these issues and then details recommendations for the school through goals, objectives, and action items. An implementation plan for the school and its community partners is also detailed.
Promoting Student Success: Bilingual Education Best Practices And Research Flaws, Lillian Fassero
Promoting Student Success: Bilingual Education Best Practices And Research Flaws, Lillian Fassero
Senior Honors Theses
This paper first determines the benefits which bilingual education offers and then compares transitional, dual-language, and heritage language maintenance programs. After exploring the outcomes, contexts, and practical implications of the various bilingual programs, this paper explores the oversight in most bilingual studies, which assess students’ syntax and semantics while neglecting their understanding of pragmatics and discourse structures (Maxwell-Reid, 2011). Incorporating information from recent studies which question traditional understandings of bilingualism and argue that biliteracy requires more than grammatical and vocabulary instruction, this paper proposes modifications in current research strategies and suggests best practices for transitional, dual-language, and heritage maintenance programs.
A Vincentian Education By Midnight, Angela Seegel
A Vincentian Education By Midnight, Angela Seegel
Journal of Vincentian Social Action
Since 2003, the University has partnered with the Midnight Run organization to provide college students with a unique and distinct connection of service and reflection of those most in need. Students are afforded a real and tangible way to encounter the poor and vulnerable of the city, and to reflect on systematic structures and circumstances, while connecting it to their faith life. In turn, this encourages students to consider creative, systematic, concrete ways to address these issues and be true catalysts of change.
A Microcosm Of The American Public Education Crisis Surrounding Race And Income, Janey Fine
A Microcosm Of The American Public Education Crisis Surrounding Race And Income, Janey Fine
Honors Theses
This thesis studies the effects that race and socio-economic status have on a student’s academic achievement in the American public education system. It compares the experiences of students from Schenectady, New York, a low-income, minority-populated small city, and neighboring Niskayuna, a predominately white, affluent community, by looking at graduation rates, school budgets and resources, teacher salaries, household income, and rates of poverty. Despite the annual budgets and student expenditures being similar amongst the two districts, the rates of poverty and racial disparities are dramatic. Therefore, this research exposes how there are countless variables outside of the school itself that impact …
When Meaningful Writing Reflects Vincentian Values, Michele Eodice, Anne Ellen Geller, Neal Lerner
When Meaningful Writing Reflects Vincentian Values, Michele Eodice, Anne Ellen Geller, Neal Lerner
Journal of Vincentian Social Action
In The Meaningful Writing Project – our study of over 700 seniors at three universities – students describe how education values are embodied in writing projects in and out of school. In brief, our results show that students find meaning when they are invited to tap into the power of personal connection, see what they are writing as applicable and relevant to the real world, imagine their future selves, immerse themselves in what they are thinking and writing about, and experience research for learning. In many cases, the experiences students reported are aligned with Vincentian values for higher education, namely …
English Language Instruction, Student Engagement, And Sustainable Practices In Rural Ecuador, Pablo J. Sanchez, Morgan R. Zajkowski
English Language Instruction, Student Engagement, And Sustainable Practices In Rural Ecuador, Pablo J. Sanchez, Morgan R. Zajkowski
Journal of Vincentian Social Action
St. John’s University’s Vincentian Institute for Social Action aims to develop student commitment to social justice through required coursework, international travel, and community service. A strong theoretical foundation ensures that administrators and students are consistently reflecting on the dynamics of power and engaging with community members in an ethical manner. Our framework should continue conversations with the community about the value of foreign language education in their particular regional and global context and encourage students to see themselves as part of a sustainable process. Where many universities and organizations provide volunteer experiences similar in theory, we hope to improve on …
Students As Catalysts For Large Landscape Conservation, Philip J. Nyhus
Students As Catalysts For Large Landscape Conservation, Philip J. Nyhus
Philip J. Nyhus
Colleges, universities, and research institutions are important innovators and partners in many large landscape conservation initiatives. Students are essential but often under-recognized constituents in these endeavors. A conference on Students as Catalysts for Large landscape Conservation was held in 2013 at Colby College to explore this topic. Participants came from 12 states, 3 countries, and 19 institutions. This paper summarizes insights from the conference and associated meetings of the Conservation Catalyst Network, including how and why students engage in large landscape conservation, benefits to students and practitioners, and remaining challenges. Land conservation and policy is replete with legacies of innovative …
