The Making And Unmaking Of An Appalachian “Home”: Tensions Between Tourism And Housing Development In Gatlinburg, Tennessee, J. Hope Amason
The Making And Unmaking Of An Appalachian “Home”: Tensions Between Tourism And Housing Development In Gatlinburg, Tennessee, J. Hope Amason
Anthropology and Museum Studies Faculty Scholarship
This article examines the economic and symbolic dimensions of redevelopment in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. I focus on one particular project, the East Parkway at Baskins Creek Bypass District, which concerned ten acres that contained a vital housing resource for low-income tourism-industry workers: residential motels. I connect Gatlinburg’s housing crisis with changing labor patterns in the wake of economic restructuring. I present two letters submitted by real estate developers and solicited by the City of Gatlinburg. In analyzing the letters, I identify two tensions: (1) between workers’ homes and the aesthetics of “Appalachian” tourism, and (2) between representations of workers and the …

Underground Infrastructure: Planning, Development And Revitalization, Guoliang Meng
Symposium Of University Research and Creative Expression (SOURCE)
The challenges facing Liuzhou’s underground infrastructure system today are unlike any it has ever faced before. Frequent underground gas pipeline leaks and explosions are impacting the safety and quality of citizens’ lives. To develop a safe, efficient and economical underground infrastructure system, Liuzhou City will have to do three things: (1) create a unified administrative department for underground pipeline administration, (2) conduct a citywide underground pipeline survey by stages and create an information platform to share the underground pipeline data, and (3) develop a public-private partnership to construct a utility tunnel. The poster outlines these critical steps in Liuzhou’s underground …
The Port Of Liuzhou: Problems And Prospects, Xifang Wang
The Port Of Liuzhou: Problems And Prospects, Xifang Wang
Symposium Of University Research and Creative Expression (SOURCE)
The poster is a graphic depiction of the problems that rapid economic development created for the Port of Liuzhou. As the industrial economy of Liuzhou City expanded, the port was increasingly unable to keep up with the import and export demands of the Liuzhou foreign trade market. The upgrading of the Port of Liuzhou has become a key factor in supporting the city’s economy and sustaining its growth. This task falls to the Liuzhou Port Administration Office. As is the case everywhere, expansion requires both authorization and the adequate appropriation of funds. Since the port is located in the West …
Liuzhou’S Housing Supply: Affordable Quality Housing For Everyone, Huazhi Zhang
Liuzhou’S Housing Supply: Affordable Quality Housing For Everyone, Huazhi Zhang
Symposium Of University Research and Creative Expression (SOURCE)
Liuzhou is known throughout China, even the world, as a livable industrial city. An adequate supply of quality housing for all citizens is the most essential factor in livability. This is especially true in China where home ownership has been a prerequisite for happiness since ancient times. Because basic housing, as a necessity of life, is now guaranteed by the state, the government must supervise and adjust the housing market. At the same time, experience has shown that adequate housing for different income categories cannot be provided by the government alone. This analysis examines the policies and strategies adopted by …
Renewing Spokane: A Study Of Motivating Forces Behind Downtown Revitalization Projects, Kara K. Mowery
Renewing Spokane: A Study Of Motivating Forces Behind Downtown Revitalization Projects, Kara K. Mowery
All Master's Theses
This study examines the motivating forces behind downtown urban renewal projects through qualitative interview research. Using Spokane, Washington, as a case study, interviews were conducted with key players in downtown revitalization, including public administrators, private developers, and non-profit representatives. While neoliberal theory indicates that economic return serves as the primary motivation for investment, interview questions were designed to uncover whether additional motivating factors stimulate renewal work. Results indicate that those conducting renewal projects are primarily motivated by economics, but additionally cite heritage preservation values and community development as significant factors. Moreover, contemporary renewal projects are found to be small-scale endeavors, …
Killin' It On Corporate Ground: The Cultural Politics Of Street Performance In A Gentrified Space, Hillary C. Matson
Killin' It On Corporate Ground: The Cultural Politics Of Street Performance In A Gentrified Space, Hillary C. Matson
All Master's Theses
On a weekend evening in San Diego’s historic Eclipse district, several buskers capture the attention of passersby as they make their way through the bustling crowds to the nearest restaurant or nightclub. These buskers represent various subcultures within a gentrified entertainment district of urban renewal that caters to the middle class. This ethnographic study aims to examine the cultural politics of busker performances in a highly corporate, gentrified space. Are buskers able to maintain their independence from the market economy or are they unintentionally or willingly reinforcing this system? Through completion of an ethnographic study in the Eclipse district, this …
Sustainability Policy’S Inherent Dilemmas – Exemplified Via Critical Examination Of The Las Vegas Metropolitan Sustainability Campaign, Kathryn A. Zimmerman
Sustainability Policy’S Inherent Dilemmas – Exemplified Via Critical Examination Of The Las Vegas Metropolitan Sustainability Campaign, Kathryn A. Zimmerman
All Master's Theses
In response to a dual problem of critical water scarcity and rapid population growth, leaders of metropolitan Las Vegas implemented a region-wide, internationally marketed sustainability campaign. Preliminary studies found that, while sustainability policy attains its rhetorical goals, solutions initiated not only perpetuate but also purposefully expand the original dual problem to justify continuous water resource acquisitions. To examine this sustainability conundrum constructed by leadership—problem-perpetuation rather than problem-resolution—a critical examination in resource management asked two basic questions: what is being sustained and by what means? Via this inquiry, specific processes by which leaders perpetuate problems can be identified; and, so-informed, new …
Boom Days In Ellensburg, 1888-1891, Samuel R. Mohler
Boom Days In Ellensburg, 1888-1891, Samuel R. Mohler
History Faculty Scholarship
When the Federal Census was taken in 1940, the population of Ellensburg, Washington, numbered 5,944. Several hundred have been added since, but there has been no wartime boom. As the home of Central Washington College of Education, the seat of government of Kittitas County, and the trading center for a prosperous agricultural and stock-raising community, it is (except perhaps during the annual Rodeo) a quiet town of steady habits with a particularly stable economy. It is doubtful if any of its present inhabitants expect it to become a great metropolis, and perhaps few would desire it to be. Yet Ellensburg …
