Recognize Martin Luther King Day, Kathleen March
Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion
Each academic year as January nears the University of Maine begins to think again about Martin Luther King, about the day officially designated to honor his life and teachings. Like several other national holidays, this one currently does not bring with it a day off from classes at this university. Several reasons have been cited for this: one is the academic year is already too short.

Mr. Gnu Comic Strip, Travis Dandro
Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion
A four-panel comic strip drawn by Travis Dandro depicting a bigoted perspective of both people of color and individuals with disabilities.
Long description.
Panel one contains one figure, a highly stylized, anthropomorphized Gnu (or African antelope with along head and beard), presumably the title character of the strip, Mr. Gnu. The character is holding a cereal box in front of him. Lettering over the character's head reads: "Hey kids! I'd like to introduce a new cereal!"
Panel two contains a close up of the cereal box with the lettering, "Sammy Davis CRUNCH" over a stylized drawing of a character that …

Caprock Canyonlands Archeology: A Synthesis Of The Late Prehistory And History Of Lake Alan Henry And The Texas Panhandle-Plains Volume Ii, Douglas K. Boyd
Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
Archeological investigations at Lake Alan Henry, in Garza and Kent Counties, Texas, between 1987 and 1993 generated much archeological data relevant to interpreting late Holocene human activities. This review goes beyond the project boundary to synthesize the late prehistory and history of the Texas Panhandle Plains, with special emphasis on the north-south band of rugged canyons found along the Caprock Escarpment, herein defined as the Caprock Canyonlands. This synthesis looks at the human past from an ecological perspective, correlating shifts in subsistence, technology, and settlement patterns with inferred changes in paleoclimate, flora, and fauna. Past fluctuations in bison population size, …

African-American Facilities For Dependent And Delinquent Children In Chicago, 1900 To 1920: The Louise Juvenile School And The Amanda Smith School, Anne Meis Knupfer
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
This article examines two "homes" and later industrial schools founded in the Chicago area for African-American dependent and delinquent children during the Progressive Era: the Louise Juvenile Home and Industrial School; and the Amanda Smith Industrial Home and School. The juvenile court's inception and expansion, especially through the Chicago Woman's Club, as well as African-American club women and probation officers, is first described. The African-American women's activism in fighting segregation and in fund-raising for the schools is especially highlighted. Nonetheless, both schools' success, as well as eventual demise, were due largely to their economic dependence upon the juvenile court.
The Legacy Of Mccarthyism On Social Group Work: An Historical Analysis, Janice Andrews, Michael Reisch
The Legacy Of Mccarthyism On Social Group Work: An Historical Analysis, Janice Andrews, Michael Reisch
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
This paper explores the impact of McCarthyism on the ideology, education, practice, and public image of group work. The authors argue that the witchhunts that occured during the period and its climate of widespread fear purges and political conservatism diminished the gains the social work profession had made in the 1930s and 1940s through its participation in progressive activities and left the profession, particularly social group work ill-prepared for the issues and activism of the 1960s and 1970s.

Religious Institutions And Black Political Activism, Frederick C. Harris
Religious Institutions And Black Political Activism, Frederick C. Harris
Trotter Review
During the modern Civil Rights Movement religious institutions provided critical organizational resources for protest mobilization. As Aldon Morris' extensive study of the southern Civil Rights Movement noted, the Black Church served as the "organizational hub of Black life," providing the resources that fostered—along with other indigenous groups and institutions—collective protest against a system of white domination in the South.
