Diana Cuy Castellanos

H.U.B. City Steps is a 5-year community-based participatory research walking intervention designed to help lower blood pressure in a majority African American population in southern Mississippi via community collaboration and capacity building, increased walking, culturally tailored health education sessions, and motivational interviewing. Building community capacity for physical activity is a key component of this intervention. Qualitative and quantitative methods have been used to assess how project stakeholders perceive the community capacity-building efforts of the project. This article illustrates the baseline results of this mixed methods approach from the perspective of three groups of stakeholders: project researchers and staff, community advisory …

The Fix Is In: "Conspiracy Theories" In Sports, Ginna Husting, Martin Orr Apr 2015

The Fix Is In: "Conspiracy Theories" In Sports, Ginna Husting, Martin Orr

Martin Orr

Documented conspiracies in sports have a long history, and are at least as old as the Black Sox scandal of 1919. Nevertheless, when charges of collusion among players, referees, coaches or owners are leveled, these are often immediately dismissed as “conspiracy theories.” In this paper we employ sport as a model for the discursive work performed by the epithet “conspiracy theory.” Through a content analysis of print media we demonstrate that, as is the case in politics, the labelling of critics of power in sport as “conspiracy theorists” serves to deflect criticisms of illegal or unethical behavior.

Mapping The Relationship Between International Sport And Diplomacy, Stuart Murray, Geoffrey Pigman Nov 2013

Mapping The Relationship Between International Sport And Diplomacy, Stuart Murray, Geoffrey Pigman

Stuart Murray

To date, the relationship between diplomacy and international sport has been relatively under-theorized. This paper seeks to redress the deficiency by proposing an analytical taxonomy of the multiple convergences between international sport and diplomacy. The principal analytical distinction to be drawn is between (1) international sport consciously employed by governments as an instrument of diplomacy and (2) international-sport-as-diplomacy, the diplomatic representation, communication and negotiation between non-state actors that take place as a result of ongoing international sporting competition.

By increasing understanding of the rôles of sport in diplomacy and diplomacy in sport, the paper seeks to promote the adoption of …

The focus of this study was to capture the perceptions of Black male student athletes and student support services providers as they pertained to access, use, and delivery of services. Another focus of this study was to identify ways in which Black male student athletes and student support services providers could help to improve delivery of those services. Participants for this study included three Black …

Understanding Teenage Poker Gambling: Policy And Consumer Behaviour Implications, Sudhir Kale, Natalina Zlatevska

Sudhir H. Kale

Gambling on poker has become a very popular activity among teenagers worldwide. However, to date, research exploring the consumer behavior of teenage poker players and contrasting poker players’ profile and personality with other gamblers is scarce. Our research addresses this gap and analyzes data from 2,000 15-19 year-olds to better understand the demographic and psychological correlates of poker gambling. Our analysis suggests that poker players are more impulsive and sensation-seeking driven than other teenage gamblers, and they also possess more distorted gambling-related cognitions. There is a greater prevalence of problem gambling among poker players compared to those gamblers who do …

This paper forms part of a panel presentation and discussion that re-evaluates the Summit Series from a more critical perspective than the nostalgic rhetoric of the recent, 2012, 40th anniversary of the event. This part of the panel presentation will examine this question: What factors have served to enshrine the Series to the Mythic and Mono-mythic Levels? Evidence utilized includes game-films from the series; the collective rhetoric of secondary sources such as 27 Days in Sept, Face Off at the Summit, Hockey Nite in Moscow, The Days Canada Stood Still, Hockey Showdown, and Shooting for Glory; film analysis such as …

Screech Owls: The Familia Of Roy Macgregor’S Narratives On Hockey, Don Morrow

Donald Morrow

Roy MacGregor is perhaps the most prolific of Canadian writers to use hockey as the subtext and text for his writing. His most well-known work, The Home Team: Fathers, Sons, and Hockey, succinctly, is an intimate portrait of the father-son bond in and through the game of hockey. More sweeping in national scope and significance of hockey is Home Game: Hockey and Life in Canada which MacGregor co-authored with hockey legend Ken Dryden. Least well known, though acclaimed by academics to be one of the very best novels on sport, is The Last Season. The latter is a poignant description …
