Learning Showcase 2016: A Celebration of Discovery, Transformation and Success
Gender norms and implicit biases work together across institutions, time, and people to contract or expand opportunity for women and girls in central Ohio - yet women are not the only ones at risk. Gender norms and implicit biases have material and drastic implications for the welfare of families and of larger society. In this report, we sought to understand what gives rise to the assumptions, associations, and expectations we place on women and men; how they are perpetuated through out interactions with relationships with each other; and how they impact and influence the lives of women and girls. Learning Showcase 2016: A Celebration of Discovery, Transformation and Success
Infant mortality is the passing of a child before his/her first birthday. With the fifth highest infant mortality rate in the United States, infant mortality is increasingly becoming a larger and more detrimental problem, especially in South Linden, Ohio. Out of every one thousand children in South Linden, 20.3 of them will not make it to their first birthday. However, despite the staggering statistics, many are not aware of the issue, and counter infant mortality, including those who live in South Linden. Thus, Music for Prosperity was created to address the lack of awareness to address the lack of awareness …

Learning Showcase 2016: A Celebration of Discovery, Transformation and Success
CRP produces data visualizations, called DataBytes, on a monthly basis. DataBytes provide a snapshot of a topic of importance to our community, region, or state today. The topics cover a wide range of social and economic issues such as student debt, carbon footprint, food security, child care, etc. DataBytes can be lighthearted, as in our April Fool's DataBytes, or introduce our audience to a serious but relevant issue, such as our Distracted Driving DataByte. These sharable graphics are great conversation starters, but also serve as resources to interesting or important local information.

Learning Showcase 2016: A Celebration of Discovery, Transformation and Success
Almost one-quarter of the U.S. college students are also parents. Many student parents are single parents, grew up in households with limited financials resources, or are the first in their families to attend college. Stable, quality, affordable housing is a critical foundation for student parents to be successful but there are limited housing options for this student subgroup. Supporting high-quality early learning opportunities for children of student parents is also a priority based on evidence from two-generation approaches to breaking the cycle of poverty.

Making Research Matter: Democratizing Science And Other Lofty Goals, Richelle Winkler
Distinguished Lecture Series
Dr. Richelle Winkler gave the inaugural Michigan Tech Research Forum Distinguished Lecture in October 2016. She discussed Making Research Matter: Democratizing Science and Other Lofty Goals.
Professor Hugh Gorman nominated Winkler, an associate professor of sociology and demography, for “community engaged scholarship" that extends across the Michigan Tech campus.
Examples of Winkler's projects include examining the feasibility—social and technical—of using mine water for geothermal heating systems in Calumet and examining the social, economic, and technical aspects of improving recycling in Houghton County. Both projects involve students and community members, and both have a real impact in the communities.

This is Old Dominion University's 17th annual State of the Region report. While it represents the work of many people connected in various ways to the university, the report does not constitute an official viewpoint of Old Dominion or it's president, John R. Broderick. The report maintains the goal of stimulating thought and discussion that ultimately will make Hampton Roads an even better place to live. We are proud of our region's many successes, but realize that it is possible to improve our performance. In order to do so, we must have accurate information about "where we are" and a …

Dogs & Society: Anglo-American Sociological Perspectives (1865-1934), Michael R. Hill, Mary Jo Deegan
Zea E-Books Collection
HUMANS AND DOGS have a long, wonderful and sometimes problematic association. At a personal level, dogs have been integral to our lives, and our parents’ lives, for as long as the two of us can remember. As sociologists, we also recognize that dogs are important at the macro level. Here, we introduce a selection of early sociological arguments about dogs and their social relationships with humankind. Our interest in developing this book began when we encountered the delightful essays on dogs by Charlotte Perkins Gilman and Annie Marion MacLean — two insightful Anglo-American sociologists who present opposing sympathies regarding the …

Architecture Of Diversity: Using The Lens And Language Of Space To Examine Racialized Experiences Of Students Of Color On College Campuses, Michelle Samura
Education Faculty Books and Book Chapters
"[A]n examination of racial diversity in higher education requires serious consideration of space... [A] spatial perspective offers a lens for locating and examining processes of racialization. And a spatial approach also provides a language participants and researchers can use to talk about the discreet ways race still operates in everyday interactions, including subtle forms of racism that are overlooked or ignored because race is often understood by students to matter less today. Essentially, a spatial approach sheds light on race relations and racial structures in tangible campus environments."
