Gendered Pronouns in the Classroom- Monday 8/24 4-5pm in Gävle Room 1

Last spring, the college community asserted that it will be inclusive of people of all genders. Since this affirmation, members of the campus community have requested professional development about the basic ideas in this discussion ("What is the difference between sex and gender?") as well as techniques for being inclusive ("How can I avoid misgendering a student or respond when others do?"). In this session, we will share foundational vocabulary, develop strategies for inclusion around gendered pronouns, and hold a Q&A with a couple of students about …

Critical Whiteness Studies For Academic Librarianship: Problems And Possibilities, Gina Schlesselman-Tarango

Does critical whiteness studies have anything to offer to interrogations of race and racism in academic librarianship? This presentation provides an introduction to critical whiteness studies, outlining its origins, major questions, and debates. LIS scholarship that has incorporated elements of this framework will be highlighted, followed by a discussion of the criticisms of and contradictions within critical whiteness studies. The presenter will conclude by suggesting strategies for addressing these limitations while remaining committed to exposing whiteness and white supremacy at work in academic librarianship.

Everyone in the class volunteers with a different nonprofit organization in the Waterville area working with them as assistant grant writers. The class, operating like the board of a granting foundation, reviews organizations' grant applications, makes funding decisions, and allocates one or more grants totaling ,000. We chose to work with the Augusta Food Bank to run a Kids Packs program where food is given to kids who are unable to get an adequate amount of food over the weekend and vacations.

Hip Fractures In Central Maine: A Retrospective Study Of Hip Fracture Patients Treated At Mainegeneral Medical Center, James Johnston, Kali Stevens

Maine has one of the oldest populations in the United States, and improving hip fracture care and secondary prevention of osteoporotic fractures are important public health goals. This study is a baseline description of hip fracture patient demographics, outcomes, and rates of secondary prevention at a mid-sized community hospital in central Maine. It included 374 hip fracture patients (who were at least 50 years old) admitted to MaineGeneral Medical Center with acute femoral neck, intertrochanteric, or subtrochanteric fractures between 2011 and 2013. The study revealed that MaineGeneral meets or exceeds standards for surgical care of hip fracture patients, but has …

Suicide is such a big problem in the older adult population. Many of older adults deal with isolation, depression, and financial instability. When a person has all of these factors playing against them it is more likely they commit suicide. The purpose of this study was to bring awareness to the older population on how serious suicide really is. Thirty older adults participated in this study, the age range for these older adults were sixty-five to seventy-four, seventy-five to eighty four, and eighty-five and up. California, the eighth largest economy in the world, has nearly one million residents that lack daily access to clean drinking water, yet it recently became the first state in the US to declare water a human right through the passage of 2013 Assembly Bill 685. The majority of water quality violations take place in the rural San Joaquin Valley in unincorporated, low-income communities, which have difficulties accessing clean, drinking water due to issues including quality, affordability, and physical availability. The presenters will describe the findings of a mixed-methods research study designed to explore students’ perspectives of skills and knowledge gained through engaging with older adults with physical and/or cognitive limitations living in a continuing care retirement community (CCRC). Participants in the study included students enrolled as juniors and seniors in a baccalaureate nursing program. Community partnerships with several CCRCs provided the opportunities for students to interact with elders. During the service-learning course, students developed and implemented evidence-based health promotion activities directed towards enhancing the elders’ cognitive, physical, and psychosocial functioning.
