Welfare Reform A Success?, Laura Stivers Nov 1999

Welfare Reform A Success?, Laura Stivers

Laura Stivers

Work your way out of poverty." This is the message women on welfare are receiving today. The philosophy is to end government's role and let people take care of themselves.

One way to limit government's role is by cutting welfare services. 1996 "welfare reform" tightened eligibility requirements, limited the number of years that individuals can receive welfare, and instituted work requirements. This shift to emphasizing work might be good. According to the new book, No Shame in My Game by Katherine Newman, poor people prefer working for low wages to being on welfare. High value is accorded the Protestant …

The Social Uses Of Advertising, Mark Ritson, Richard Elliott Nov 1999

The Social Uses Of Advertising, Mark Ritson, Richard Elliott

Mark Ritson

Advertising research has focused exclusively on the solitary subject at the expense of understanding the role that advertising plays within the social contexts of group interaction. We develop a number of explanations for this omission before describing the results of an ethnographic study of advertising's contribution to the everyday interactions of adolescent informants at a number of English high schools. The study reveals a series of new, socially related advertising-audience behaviors. Specifically, advertising meanings are shown to possess social uses relating to textual experience, interpretation, evaluation, ritual use, and metaphor. The theoretical and managerial implications of these social uses are …

Purification Et Propriétés Physico-Chimiques Des Enzymes De Curculigo Pilosa, Gladiolus Klattianus Et Boscia Senegalensis Catalysant L'Hydrolyse Des Polysaccharides (Amidon Et Béta-Glucanes), Mamoudou H. Dicko Prof.

Pr. Mamoudou H. DICKO, PhD

The objective of this study was the research of novel and inexpensive sources of polysaccharides degrading enzymes such as amylases and glucanases from local plants in order to justify their biotechnological applications. The isolation of two l3-amylases and an endo-1,3-ß-D-glucanase was reached using common protein purification methods such as buffer extraction, ammonium sulfate fractionation, ionexchange and gel filtration chromatographies. The methods used were simple and easily reproducible, suggesting the possibilfty of large-scale production. ln the crude extract of Curculigo pilosa tuber, only ß-amylase was detected as starch degrading enzyme and its activity was approximately 282 Uig of fresh material. The …

Women, Work, And Wages, Laura Stivers Mar 1999

Women, Work, And Wages, Laura Stivers

Laura Stivers

We know women earn 74 cents for every dollar men earn, but why?

Start with the reality that 80 percent of U.S. workers do routine production or service work, like answering phones or selling clothes, and their paychecks have shrunk. The other 20 percent of workers use advanced technology or make decisions about money, like engineers or stockbrokers, and their pay has increased. Yes, most women are in the first category.

A Coalfield Tapestry: Weaving The Socioeconomic Fabric Of Women's Lives, Ann M. Oberhauser, Anne-Marie Turnage Mar 1999

A Coalfield Tapestry: Weaving The Socioeconomic Fabric Of Women's Lives, Ann M. Oberhauser, Anne-Marie Turnage

Ann Oberhauser

Throughout the coalfields of central Appalachia, working-class people are engaging in alternative means of economic survival. For many, the region's endemic poverty is now worsening as tremendous job losses in coal mining diminish the historic source of employment for working -class men. In order to secure the necessities of life for themselves and their families, working-class women are not only entering the paid labor force but also turning to unregulated forms of income generation that lie outside the formal, wage-earning economy.

The Limits Of Cultural Pluralism: An Israeli Perspective, Raphael Cohen-Almagor Jan 1999

The Limits Of Cultural Pluralism: An Israeli Perspective, Raphael Cohen-Almagor

raphael cohen-almagor

The primary aims of this paper are (a) to examine the importance of cultural norms and what part they play in requiring us to tolerate others out of respect, and (b) to formulate some guidelines designed to prescribe boundaries to liberty and tolerance conducive to safeguard the rights of individuals and, in turn, democracy. I argue that a liberal democracy can interfere in the business of its sub-cultures when some cultural norms subvert the basic principles upon which a liberal society is founded. Here I address, inter alia, the issues of female circumcision, murder for family honour, and blood feuds. …

A Plan For The Abolition Of Slavery, Consistently With The Interests Of All Parties Concerned (London, 1828), C. S. Monaco Jan 1999

A Plan For The Abolition Of Slavery, Consistently With The Interests Of All Parties Concerned (London, 1828), C. S. Monaco

C. S. Monaco

Published anonymously during the resurgence of the antislavery campaign in Britain, Moses E. Levy's pamphlet, "A Plan for the Abolition of Slavery," stands without parallel. The appearance of this publication in 1828 London, established Levy as the first and only Jewish abolitionist author amid a plethora of mostly Evangelical stalwarts. The scope and magnitude of Levy's ideas exceeded the more modest attempts by a small cohort of Jewish antislavery advocates who appeared much later in the United States. The entire pamphlet is reproduced here and, for the first time, extensive annotations by C. S. Monaco places this work into historical …

What Has Happened To The U.S. Labor Movement? Union Decline And Renewal, Dan Clawson, Mary Ann Clawson Jan 1999

What Has Happened To The U.S. Labor Movement? Union Decline And Renewal, Dan Clawson, Mary Ann Clawson

Dan Clawson

For many years, US trade unions declined in union density, organizing capacity, level of strike activity, and political effectiveness. Labor’s decline is variously attributed to demographic factors, inaction by unions themselves, the state and legal system, globalization, neoliberalism, and the employer offensive that ended a labor-capital accord. The AFL-CIO New Voice leadership elected in 1995, headed by John Sweeney, seeks to reverse these trends and transform the labor movement. Innovative organizing, emphasizing the use of rank-and-file intensive tactics, substantially increases union success; variants include union building, immigrant organizing, feminist approaches, and industry-wide non-National Labor Relations Board (or nonboard) organizing. The …

Negotiating New Asian American Masculinities: Attitudes And Gender Expectations, Peter Chua, Diane Fujino Jan 1999

Negotiating New Asian American Masculinities: Attitudes And Gender Expectations, Peter Chua, Diane Fujino

Peter Chua

The article examines how Asian-American men construct their own masculinities. Changes in Asian-American heterosexual masculinity are of great interest within the Asia-American communities and to the general public. Historically this racialized masculinity was both hypermasculanized and desexualized as a way to limit economic and racial opportunities in the U.S. While these dichotomous ideas about Asian-American masculinities are still pervasive new articulations of what it means to be male, straight, and Asian American are affecting different Asian-American communities and interpersonal relationships at home and in workplaces. Issues of Asian- American masculinities are brought up in relation to interracial dating and marriage, …

Making Aluminum In The Rainforest: The Social Impact Of Globalization In The Brazilian Amazon, Paul Ciccantell Dec 1998

Making Aluminum In The Rainforest: The Social Impact Of Globalization In The Brazilian Amazon, Paul Ciccantell

Paul Ciccantell

A great deal of recent attention in the social science literature has focused on the process of globalization, the increasing economic and social integration of all regions of the world. The development of the capitalist world economy over the last five hundred years has been tied to and dependent upon the incorporation of socially and geographically remote regions and ecosystems into the world economy.1 A major driving force behind this process of incorporation has been increasing demand for raw materials to fuel industrialization and feed growing populations in the core nations.2 This process of raw materials-based incorporation is shaped by …

The Alliance Party Of Northern Ireland And Power Sharing In A Divided Society, Allan Leonard Dec 1998

The Alliance Party Of Northern Ireland And Power Sharing In A Divided Society, Allan Leonard

Allan Leonard

The government of Northern Ireland from 1920 to 1972 represented a one-party government, or more appropriately, a segmental majority of unionism; Nationalist parties were perpetually unable to, as well as restricted from, achieving control of government. Political processes since then have been to compel Unionists to share power with others. There is more than one way to apply power sharing, with consociational (Lijphart 1977) or integrative (Horowitz 1985; 1991) elements. The result can be a more or less integrated society (Sisk 1996).

My thesis is that with the achievement of the 1998 Agreement, Alliance’s pursuit of a Northern Ireland-integrative power …

Transitional Adaptation: A Neoweberian Theory Of Ecologically-Based Social Change, Sherrie Steiner Dec 1998

Transitional Adaptation: A Neoweberian Theory Of Ecologically-Based Social Change, Sherrie Steiner

Sherrie M Steiner

This theory presents an explanation for why the transition to sustainability posits distinctive challenges to social change toward sustainability. Civilization collapse is most vulnerable during the transition process toward sustainability due to increasing environmental fluctuations from environmental degradation. Collaborative relations between civic volunteers and governing bodies is considered as an important factor for adapting to these increasing fluctuations.

Boycott!: Louise Imogen Guiney And The American Protective Association, Patricia Fanning Dec 1998

Boycott!: Louise Imogen Guiney And The American Protective Association, Patricia Fanning

Patricia J. Fanning

Irish-American poet and author Louise Imogen Guiney endured anti-Catholic discrimination in Boston during the 1890’s. Well known to contemporary Bostonians as both a writer and the daughter of an Irish Roman Catholic Civil War officer, Guiney was appointed postmaster in Auburndale in January 1894. She initially liked the job’s duties, pay, and stability. However, many residents of Auburndale, including those associated with the anti-Catholic American Protective Association, boycotted the post office by not buying stamps there. As a result, in October 1894 her salary was cut. Guiney’s friends subsequently led a counterattack that resulted in stamp purchases coming to Auburndale …

Economic Ascent And The Global Environment: World-Systems Theory And The New Historical Materialism, Paul Ciccantell, Stephen Bunker Dec 1998

Economic Ascent And The Global Environment: World-Systems Theory And The New Historical Materialism, Paul Ciccantell, Stephen Bunker

Paul Ciccantell

The manipulation and reorganization of the relationship between nature and society is the most complex task confronting any ascendant economy. Gaining secure, inexpensive access to the huge volume of raw materials building blocks of capitalist industrial production requires economic, political, technical, and organizational innovations that restructure both existing social relationships (e.g. core-periphery relations) and the characteristics of the nature-society nexus (e.g. what raw materials are extracted where and by whom). The strategies of states and firms in ascendant economies to accomplish this task create what we term "generative sectors": leading economic sectors that are simultaneously key centers of capital accumulation, …

Lives In Motion: Composing Circles Of Self And Community In Japan. Edited By Susan Orpett Long, Susan Long Dec 1998

Lives In Motion: Composing Circles Of Self And Community In Japan. Edited By Susan Orpett Long, Susan Long

Susan O Long

From the deathbed to the commuter railway station, from the marriage market to the fish market, from the baseball field to the grave, this volume explores the diversity of contemporary Japanese society by studying how people "compose" their families, their communities, and their own identities. Challenging fixed boundaries characteristic of institutional analysis, these essays comprise an anthropology of real people who age, who play, and whose lives speak to ours even over chasms of cultural differences and misunderstandings. The contributors are historians, sociologists, and anthropologists of Japan who engage these ideas in their research and who have been inspired over …
