A Critique Of ‘Liberal Peace’ And ‘Conflict Resolution’: A Critical Peace Alternative, Nicos Trimikliniotis Apr 2015

A Critique Of ‘Liberal Peace’ And ‘Conflict Resolution’: A Critical Peace Alternative, Nicos Trimikliniotis

Nicos Trimikliniotis

This paper critiques the notions of peace, peace-building, which often goes together with state-building, development and transitional justice, are connected to the liberal peace model. It proposes that alternative readings are required that to allow reconceptualising of peace and better route in a dynamic and conflict-based reading of society. The critique of liberal peace can pave the way for reading the dialectics peace/war and ethnic conflict/reconciliation in deeply divided societies suffering from ethnic-related violence. It critiques Conflict Resolution (CR) approaches and considers how a sociological reading can enrich, restructure and reconceptualise of peace-in-society in terms of critical peace. Unlike those …

Gauging And Engaging Deviance 1600–2000, Nicos Trimikliniotis, Ari Sitas, Wiebke Keim, Sumangala Damodaran, Faisal Garba

Nicos Trimikliniotis

Gauging and Engaging Deviance is at once a creative and challenging work. It is not just a critique of the sociological canon, but an imaginative reconstruction that is generous to all nooks and crannies of the planet. It is also a memorial to modernity’s victims, whether they were perceived to be deviant or not. Its broad historical range, its geographical spread, and its attention to race and power create a conceptual grammar through which we can speak of the key challenges, traumas and violence of the contemporary period. Through its pages the Maroon and the Pirate meet Don Quixote, the …

Incorporating A Class Analysis Within The National Question: Rethinking Ethnicity, Class And Nationalism In Cyprus, Umut Bozkurt, Nicos Trimikliniotis Dec 2013

Incorporating A Class Analysis Within The National Question: Rethinking Ethnicity, Class And Nationalism In Cyprus, Umut Bozkurt, Nicos Trimikliniotis

Nicos Trimikliniotis

This article has two main aims. Firstly, it aims to challenge the widespread narrative in Cyprus studies that presents ethnic identities as historically inevitable and natural. Rather, identities need to be conceptualized as socially constructed. The second aim of this article is to problematize the argument that ethnic or national groups are homogenous actors. It underlines the need to deconstruct these supposedly unitary actors by making use of a class-based conceptualization of the state. By using such a conceptualization, the article will focus on the period between 1878 and 1974. It will start with a concrete analysis of the class …

Nicos Trimikliniotis

This is a book review of a splendid book by Fouskas and Dimoulas. The shifts the story from the micro to the macro, from geopolitics to the economy, and from class to political protagonists. Overall, this greatly adds to the book’s depth of analysis and the shifting is successful as the authors integrate and synthesise their text by presenting the whole book as a constant shifting game. The book unfolded like a novel with a vast amount of empirical data – economic and sociological. The crisis in Greece, or better, the crisis of Europeanism and global financialization as experienced in …

Can We Learn From Comparing Violent Conflicts And Reconciliation Processes? For A Sociology Of Conflict And Reconciliation Going Beyond Sociology, Nicos Trimikliniotis Dec 2013

Can We Learn From Comparing Violent Conflicts And Reconciliation Processes? For A Sociology Of Conflict And Reconciliation Going Beyond Sociology, Nicos Trimikliniotis

Nicos Trimikliniotis

This paper examines the potential for a sociology of ethnic conflict and reconciliation in ethnic divided societies. It provides the basic framework to address barriers and conceptual difficulties in connecting knowledge across disciplines and paradigms, bridging the knowledge gap from the fact that the study of conflict is often detached from the study reconciliation processes. It critiques conflict resolution and liberal peace models with their Eurocentric biases and envisions a multidisciplinary approach to the subject. It proposes a sociology of conflict/reconciliation that is global, contextual, universal and particular to treat violent conflicts and reconciliation processes as distinct dynamic modes within …

Nicos Trimikliniotis

The Embodiment Of Tolerance In Discourses And Practices Addressing Cultural Diversity In Schools, The Case Of Cyprus, Nicos Trimikliniotis, Corina Demetriou, Elena Papamichael Oct 2012

The Embodiment Of Tolerance In Discourses And Practices Addressing Cultural Diversity In Schools, The Case Of Cyprus, Nicos Trimikliniotis, Corina Demetriou, Elena Papamichael

Nicos Trimikliniotis

The report examines the processes, methods and Practices of the Cypriot educational system as the

embodiment of tolerance in discourses and practices addressing cultural diversity in schools. These are

mediated by the perceptions of policy makers, the convictions of stakeholders involved in the processes and abilities of and tools made available to educationalists. In examining the nature of the educational system and particularly the way in which the system treats its minoritised individuals and groups, the philosophy which emerges is that of viewing diversity as a disadvantage and a deficiency that needs to be ‘treated’, against a backdrop of essentialising …

Nicos Trimikliniotis

For A Sociology Of Reconciliation And Conflict: An Ascending Ethic Of Reconciliation?, Nicos Trimikliniotis Sep 2011

For A Sociology Of Reconciliation And Conflict: An Ascending Ethic Of Reconciliation?, Nicos Trimikliniotis

Nicos Trimikliniotis

The paper discusses 'the ethic of reconciliation' by Ari Sitas by exploring the potential for synthesizing a number of alternative formulations in terms of structures of thought, political, ideological and social movements, which have the potential of uniting as a global force for change. Is there a logic of convergence towards an ‘ethic of reconciliation’?

Traps And Pitfalls In Comparatively Analysing Reconciliation – A Critical Epistemological Contribution And A Research Agenda, Nicos Trimikliniotis, Wiebke Kiem May 2011

Traps And Pitfalls In Comparatively Analysing Reconciliation – A Critical Epistemological Contribution And A Research Agenda, Nicos Trimikliniotis, Wiebke Kiem

Nicos Trimikliniotis

This paper is a contribution to ongoing debate around comparative perspectives on reconciliation processes. For social researchers and activists alike, possibilities to draw parallels and make comparisons between conflicts and reconciliation processes in different historical, cultural and socio-economic settings are crucial – for adequate social scientific analysis as well as for appropriate political agency. While we find a huge body of literature around philosophical and methodological issues in international comparative endeavours, in recent times little has been said on the broader epistemological underpinnings of the debate. In how far are concrete social experiences and social knowledge derived thereof at all …

Labour Integration Of Migrant Workers In Cyprus: A Critical Appraisal, Nicos Trimikliniotis, Corina Demetriou Dec 2010

Labour Integration Of Migrant Workers In Cyprus: A Critical Appraisal, Nicos Trimikliniotis, Corina Demetriou

Nicos Trimikliniotis

This paper maps and evaluates the area of migrant labour integration in Cyprus. This is is not an easy task as the issue of integration has for years been a non-starter. Until the end of 2010, when the first national action plan on integration was adopted, the policy framework could only be schematically imagined. It concludes that Integration requires a serious change in the whole way in which migrants are perceived and are structurally located in society. In particular, it requires a radical reform of the current immigration model which needs to shift from the short-term temporary model to a …

Nicos Trimikliniotis

Racist And Related Hate Crimes In Cyprus [By Nicos Trimikliniotis & Corina Demetriou], Nicos Trimikliniotis Aug 2010

Racist And Related Hate Crimes In Cyprus [By Nicos Trimikliniotis & Corina Demetriou], Nicos Trimikliniotis

Nicos Trimikliniotis

[1]. Recording racist crime is a rather new area for Cyprus, which started in 2005 with the police creating a rather basic mechanism for recording racial incidents. The relevant police unit is however understaffed and overloaded with other mandates, to the effect that little recording is done of racist crime and even less processing of the data collected. There is no tradition in Cyprus in collecting data on other hate crimes and no information as to its extent; also special hate crimes such as anti-Semitism or islamophobia are engrossed within racially motivated crime and are not afforded separate treatment.

Polarisations In The World-System, Nicos Trimikliniotis Apr 2010

Polarisations In The World-System, Nicos Trimikliniotis

Nicos Trimikliniotis

The project led by Immanuel Wallerstein’s which is re-examining various aspects/dimensions of polarisations over the last 500 years is a fascinating and ambitious project: ten aspects of the transformations/trends over this long period were chosen in order to examine how matters have been transformed during this time in the core, semi-periphery and periphery of the world-system. The broad themes are the following: wealth; deruralization; urbanization; state power; citizenship’; enterprises; ecology; gender; cultural practices and deviance. Not all papers are so far at the same level of advancement but they will promise to be so in a year’s time.

Gauging Deviance: Capitalist Modernity, Deviance And Human Progress, Nicos Trimikliniotis

Nicos Trimikliniotis

This is a paper which consists of extracts from a draft paper co-authored by Ari Sitas, Sumangala Damodaran, Wiebke Keim and Nicos Trimikliniotis. The draft is 81 pages long but I have included here only a 7 page long document. It will take at least two forms: a short part 6000 words for the book edited by Immanuel Wallerstein in Polarisations in the World-system and a full-fledged co-authored book. The cluster Gauging the Cycles of Deviance is headed by Ari Sitas for the proposes of the project on Polarisations led by Immanuel Wallerstein: the idea us to re-examine various aspects/dimensions …

This is an interview with Ana Esther Ceceña, researcher/professor in geopolitics, National Autonomous University of México, Director of the Geopolitics Latinamerican Observatory, in Lisbon, Portugal. She presented her paper for the Project on Polarisation in the last 500 years led by Immanuel Wallerstein, where she examines ecology, indigenous peoples and movements in March 2010.

Communiqué For Elders On Reconciliation, Reunification And Peace In Cyprus: An Inter-Communal Civic Initiative, Nicos Trimikliniotis Nov 2009

Communiqué For Elders On Reconciliation, Reunification And Peace In Cyprus: An Inter-Communal Civic Initiative, Nicos Trimikliniotis

Nicos Trimikliniotis

The visit of Elders in December 2009 is coinciding with a critical moment in the negotiation process, which is gradually entering into its final crucial phase. The two leaders appear determined to move forward with a settlement, despite the inherent difficulties; the Elders’ visit can assist the process by encouraging the leaders to show courage and boldness so as to press on with an agreement as soon as possible. Unlike in 2004, where both process and outcome were in the end delegitimized as ‘externally imposed’ and ‘not properly balanced’, this time the process is entirely owned and controlled by the …

Preventing Racism, Xenophobia And Related Intolerance In Sport Across The European Union - Raxen Thematic Study On Cyprus, Nicos Trimikliniotis Sep 2009

Preventing Racism, Xenophobia And Related Intolerance In Sport Across The European Union - Raxen Thematic Study On Cyprus, Nicos Trimikliniotis

Nicos Trimikliniotis

This is a staudy on racism in sport in Cyprus, part of the the RAXEN Network.

There is no comprehensive study, nor is there any systematic system of recording racist incidents and discriminatory practices in sport in Cyprus. To collect the necessary evidence for the purposes of this report the NFP relied on various secondary sources (books, media reports). Additionally, the report draws on interviews as well as extensive information gathering from the persons interviewed (see interview list). There is however some ‘concrete’ evidence in the form of specialised body reports and sanctions against particular clubs imposed by the tribunal …

Exceptions, Soft Borders And Free Movement For Workers, Nicos Trimikliniotis Sep 2009

Exceptions, Soft Borders And Free Movement For Workers, Nicos Trimikliniotis

Nicos Trimikliniotis

This chapter deals with issues of exceptions, soft borders and free movement for workers as illustrated in the Case of Cyprus. The chapter attempts to unravel some exceptional considerations aiming to restrict free movement for workers essentially on the grounds political and economic conditions that fall outside the edges of the law. The ECJ has repeatedly ruled that the scope of exceptions, derogations, issues relating to the territorial scope of treaties as well as various public policy and security considerations restricting free movement, are severely limited by the operation of the fundamental principles of the EU acquis. On the other …

13 Nationality And Citizenship In Cyprus Since 1945: Communal Citizenship, Gendered Nationality And The Adventures Of A Post-Colonial Subject In A Divided Country, Nicos Trimikliniotis

Nicos Trimikliniotis

This paper examines the issues relating to citizenship and nationality in Cyprus since 1945 from the colonial times to independence. It examines the historical context and evolution of citizenship in Cyprus and then it analyses the legal aspects of the modes of acquisition and loss of citizenship. Finally it looks at the current debates and the challenges of gender equality, migration, Europeanisation and reunification.

The Cypriot Roma And The Failure Of Education:Anti-Discrimination And Multiculturalism As A Post-Accession Challenge, Nicos Trimikliniotis Dec 2008

The Cypriot Roma And The Failure Of Education:Anti-Discrimination And Multiculturalism As A Post-Accession Challenge, Nicos Trimikliniotis

Nicos Trimikliniotis

This covers the period prior to 2008. At its outset, this study explores the general context of the Roma in Cyprus and their identity as Cypriot citizens, their legal classification, cultural identity and population concentration. It then examines the legal framework within which the Roma of Cyprus are educated by describing the provisions regarding access to education, as well as recent legislation transposing the anti-discrimination acquis. According to the Constitution of the Cyprus Republic, the vast majority of Roma are classified as belonging to the ‘Turkish community’ without a minority rights status and as such their access to education in …

Annan V: Rethinking The Viability Of The Constitutional Arrangement And Its Future Importance, Nicos Trimikliniotis Dec 2008

Annan V: Rethinking The Viability Of The Constitutional Arrangement And Its Future Importance, Nicos Trimikliniotis

Nicos Trimikliniotis

This chapter argues that despite the post-colonial Zurich-London legacy and the flaws contained in the final version of the Annan Plan its central pillars provided the basis for a viable, workable and fair constitutional arrangement for both Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots. The plan’s philosophy is in line with human rights conventions, UN resolutions, the EU Acquis and the High Level agreements of 1977 and 1979. It defines ‘a bizonal bicommunal federation with a single sovereignty, international personality and citizenship’. The alternative – the indefinite continuation of de facto partition, or a de jure partition, or a ‘return’ to a …

New Female Migration And Integration Related Policies In Cyprus [Co-Authored With Mihaela Fulias Souroulla], Nicos Trimikliniotis

Nicos Trimikliniotis

This chapter is a state of the art on the national context of Cyprus on the subject of integration and migration of mifgrant women. This is a rather problematic venture given that the literature available on the subject is mostly ‘international’ and as such we are forced to erect artificial ‘national’ or ‘state boundaries’ in order to confine the ambit of our work. Secondly, there is an inherent contextual problem relating to the de facto division of the country in which we are faced with the fact that Cyprus is a bi-communal and bilingual country, but due to budgetary reasons …

The Use And Abuse Of Undeclared And Unprotected Labour: Migration, Europeanisation And The Role Of Trade Unions, Nicos Trimikliniotis Dec 2008

The Use And Abuse Of Undeclared And Unprotected Labour: Migration, Europeanisation And The Role Of Trade Unions, Nicos Trimikliniotis

Nicos Trimikliniotis

This paper considers the processes, the mechanisms and the social agency involved in what is a widespread phenomenon in Europe and the globe. The paper draws on experiences and knowledge from across Europe and beyond to illustrate the use and abuse of undeclared labour, particularly undocumented migrant labour within the process of European integration in order to consider ways to tackle it.

Globalisation And Migrant Labour In A 'Rainbow Nation': A Fortress South, Nicos Trimikliniotis Sep 2008

Globalisation And Migrant Labour In A 'Rainbow Nation': A Fortress South, Nicos Trimikliniotis

Nicos Trimikliniotis

Outside southern Africa little attention has been given to the lively debates, particularly within South Africa, about migration, economic integration, racism/xenophobia and exclusion. After the collapse of apartheid the Southern African Development Community (sadc) developed initiatives on regional co-operation on population movement in a far-reaching 1995 Draft Protocol on Free Movement. However, the post-apartheid South African state was concerned solely with free trade and, with the support of other regional players, managed to halt the Protocol. The processes of neoliberal regional integration, socioeconomic transformations, poverty and inequality, as well as the political turmoil in countries of the sub-Saharan region, have …

Nicos Trimikliniotis

[In Greek] This paper is an attempt at approaching the issue of truth and reconciliation in Cyprus in a way that draws upon both the international as well as the local struggles and traditions, in an effort to critically integrate the knowledge, experiences and allow for reflectivity. What follows is a brief sketch of a more extensive paper which reflects upon the means, goals and ultimate objectives in a manner that is open-ended and non-exhaustive to contribute towards a debate on a subject that has not received its due attention . The paper draws upon some of the debates over …
