This article focuses on the wide variety of channels through which the process of knowledge transfer occurs. The overall objective is to show the complexity of relationships between researchers and firms in a university system, and to identify some specific factors that influence such interactions. Our case study involves a face-to-face survey of 765 heads of research teams in a regional system to contrast the multiple forms of university–industry collaborative linkages. Drawing on the exploitation of a data set developed for the purpose, we show that for a majority of universities the thrust of their collaborative experiences is devoted to …

This article analyzes the main features of the sociological perspective on innovation. The main goal is to specify the concepts and analytical tools commonly used by sociologists that can be useful for the study of the innovation processes. The strategy of the paper starts by specifying the object of study, the influences from other specialties inside and outside the sociological field and the research topics related to innovation that attract the attention of sociologists. This paper sets out a conceptual framework for the analysis of the role played by higher education establishments in urban-renewal initiatives. It is based on an integrated analysis of the uses of the university both as promoters of business innovation and in terms of their civic and social outcomes. This is combined with the dimensions habitually considered in urban regeneration strategies. The paper is organised so as to consider the possible effects of universities’ resources along four axes: physical infrastructure, human resources, governance and social intervention, and economic development. Este artículo ofrece un marco conceptual sobre el rol que juegan las organizaciones de educación superior en las iniciativas de regeneración de entornos urbanos. Para ello se realiza un análisis integrado de los usos de la universidad tanto en su vertiente de promoción de la innovación empresarial como en su vertiente cívica y social. Ello se combina con las dimensiones consideradas habitualmente en las estrategias de regeneración urbana. This article examines the complexity of the links between industry and universities in a peripheral region from the perspective of the firms. It focuses specifically on the diversity of situations in which these university-industry interactions occur. A survey of 737 firms in Andalusia is used for the analysis, reflecting a variety of innovative profiles. The analysis identifies the importance of a wide range of relationships, determines how they are structured and draws a profile of firms according to their links with universities. The results show the multiple channels by which a university system can contribute to firm innovation. They also …

Studies of innovation are giving increasing attention to the relationships that businesses maintain with different participants in the innovation process. It is generally assumed that interaction with other businesses, universities and government organizations can generate knowledge that will improve the ability to innovate. However, there is little evidence of the specific roles that businesses assign to partners with regard to the provision of knowledge for innovation activities. The aim of this paper is twofold. On the one hand, it offers a systematic analysis of the data available regarding Spanish scientists’ dissemination activities; on the other, it seeks to shed light on their behaviour and motivations. To do this, we consider the context of Spanish society and the conditions affecting the work and professional promotion of scientists. We present evidence from two surveys of CSIC researchers and of participants in Spain’s main science fair, with the caveat that the data were obtained in a methodologically favourable scenario. What are the implications of the fact that the most important positions in science policy are held by credentialed and experienced researchers? We propose that appointing scientists to high-level responsibilities in R&D systems have some side effects for both policy making and for the organizational arrangements in S&T organizations that rely on public funding. Stratification mechanisms in the governance of science create a kind of hybrid career between research and science policy. This article studies professional careers between research and positions of responsibility in the governance of science. The process by which researchers are recruited in science policy organizations is studied as well as the conditioning social mechanisms which intervene in the subsequent development of their careers. 65 professional life stories of researchers that have held management, policy making and political positions in the Spanish R&D system between 1975 and 2007 have been employed. Studies of university–industry collaboration remain subject to important limitations due to the shortage of empirical data and a lack of consistency in that obtained to date. This article puts into practice a set of universities Third Mission indicators in a regional innovation system. Selected indicators previously compiled from literature were reorganized and pre-tested. We have undertaken two face-to-face surveys of 737 firms and 765 heads of research teams, respectively. The results test the validation of indicators and provide a complex map of university–industry linkages as well as some observations on the flexibility needed to address this issue.

Las encuestas de innovación a empresas son un instrumento habitual para el análisis y diagnóstico de los recursos y actividades de I+D e innovación en el tejido productivo. Las pautas metodológicas y, en especial, las definiciones de los conceptos que se emplean en este tipo de encuestas suelen recogerse en manuales dirigidos a facilitar comparaciones internacionales, tales como el denominado Manual de Oslo de la OCDE (1992, 1997 y 2005). This paper examines knowledge resulting from applied sociology, namely from sociological research oriented towards resolving practical problems rather than providing new contributions to our understanding of social phenomena. Departing from James Coleman’s analytical distinction between ‘the world of discipline’ and ‘the world of action’, I draw a conceptual framework which depicts the main dimensions of typical organizational arrangements for doing basic and applied sociological work. Secondly, I analyze applied sociology as a set of social and political conditions where research is produced. Este artículo realiza un análisis de las encuestas sociales entendidas como tecnología social. Las encuestas no son exactamente una ciencia. Son tecnologías que aúnan un conjunto de conocimientos procedentes de varias disciplinas con un objetivo práctico. Para ello se requieren formas organizativas que articulan recursos materiales y humanos para producir un resultado aceptable en un periodo de tiempo y con unos recursos limitados. What factors affect the organizational models of the large national public research centers? How does organizational change affect the nature of the scientific activities they perform?
