In the context of increased managerialism as well as reduced resources in social services organisation employers want students ‘properly prepared’ for practice (Frost, Höjer & Campanini, 2013). However research has suggested that there are differences in the way knowledge is understood and used between educational institutions and the workplace. A successful transition from being a student to a qualified practitioner is “fundamental to becoming a competent practitioner” (Seah, Mackenzie and Gamble, 2011, p.104). The behaviour of the practice teacher on students’ placements is essential to students’ learning experience. Yet as supervision is complex and multi-faceted so can the role of the practice teacher be. Using a Q methodological approach participants were asked to rank thirty-one statements which could be considered part of the role of the practice teacher in relation to how important they judgement them to be to the practice teacher’s role. This book examines shifts in the conceptualisation and government of childhood in the West from the early modern period to the present. The book deals with three key time-periods, examining changes in conceptions of childhood and child-rearing between the sixteenth and late eighteenth century; between the late eighteenth century and the mid/late twentieth century and the period from the late twentieth century to the present. The aim of the study was to explore the views and experiences of students in a Social Science department in an institute of higher education. All undergraduate students were surveyed using a structured questionnaire. 258 valid questionnaire were returned and analysed to ascertain students’ opinions on the purpose of assessment, how prepared they felt for assessments, their experiences and views of formative feedback and their reactions to grades. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the promotion and tenure experiences of women faculty who carry out community-engaged scholarship. Purposive sampling of women faculty members nationwide who received national recognition for their work as community-engaged scholars was conducted. In depth semi-structured interviews, personal written scholarship narratives, written personal promotion and tenure narratives and other written documents provide the oral and written data analyzed in this study. This paper critically analyzes – in a qualitative, exploratory way – a diversity training programme designed by Mr. Marshall Plummer, the former Vice President of the Navajo Nation, called ‘Working with Navajos.’ My research query is whether the training programme is consistent with theoretical models for developing intercultural sensitivity, particularly M.J. This paper is an exploratory study of the holiday practices of an increasingly important segment of the Irish tourism market: gay men. Studies show that gay men are, in many respects, desirable tourists: they tend to be more highly educated, have greater disposable incomes and a higher propensity to travel than non-gay people. Yet there has been relatively little research – and virtually none in an Irish context – concerning gay male holiday motivations, destination choice and behaviours. The aim of this research project was to develop a model of understanding, coping with and preventing work-related stress in social care organizations. The research was framed conceptually in a model of organizational stress developed and adapted from Beehr’s (1998) integrative model of organizational stress. The title of the thesis is ‘What are four-year-olds doing at school? Reconciling current knowledge about learning in young children with early educational pedagogy.’ The study addresses the question of four-year-olds at school on two levels. On the one hand, the study describes what four-year-olds are doing at school. Using data from the IEA Preprimary Project1 the thesis provides information on parental and teacher expectations for 203 four-year-olds and presents details of the observed behaviour of the children and their teachers in school.
