Implementing Behavior Analysis And Intervention For Individuals With Cognitive Impairments In Skilled Nursing Facilities: Summary Of Results, Janet S. Hahn, Jonathan C. Baker, Sandra Wagner, Andrea Perez, Minyoung Kim, Sydney Bulock

Center for Gerontology Reports and Publications

Summary of Purpose

The purpose of the project was to provide behavioral consultation and services to aging persons with cognitive impairment at skilled nursing facilities in Michigan. The goal was to use empirically supported non-pharmacological approaches to reduce behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD; wandering, agitation, disruptive vocalizations, etc.) and help slow down or remediate lost skills, reduce the use of medication to manage BPSD, to improve staff knowledge and abilities, and to develop modules that can be adopted and used by other skilled nursing facilities. The project was led by Dr. Janet Hahn, a social gerontologist with extensive experience …

Black Women As Scapegoats: The Mass Incarceration Of Black Men And The Social Stigma Of The Welfare Queen, Keiondra J. Grace, Olivia M. Mclaughlin Apr 2017

Black Women As Scapegoats: The Mass Incarceration Of Black Men And The Social Stigma Of The Welfare Queen, Keiondra J. Grace, Olivia M. Mclaughlin

Research and Creative Activities Poster Day

In popular and academic discourse, African American women are regarded as the source of all social ills within the inner-city. This has become increasingly true in the era of mass incarceration, resultant of the War on Drugs. While Black men are portrayed as violent criminals, Black women are portrayed as the drug addicted, welfare queens they left behind. This trend can be explained, in part, by the actions of politicians and researchers who appear to remain ignorant to the importance of recognizing social structures such as gender, race, and class. We argue that Black single mothers, some of the most …

The Digital Watchmakers: Playing With The Sacred In Video Games, Anthony Langley Apr 2016

The Digital Watchmakers: Playing With The Sacred In Video Games, Anthony Langley

Research and Creative Activities Poster Day

With video games establishing itself as a multi-billion dollar industry, academia as a whole has been slowly looking at the medium as an object of study. The field of religious studies has also begun to take notice of it. At face value, this is a great a way to observe concepts of religiosity in a fairly new medium. In spite of this, the same questions are being asked. The first is how are the narrative of games depicting religious motifs? Secondly, what can we learn through the social interactions of people within a digital space about religion? Finally, how are …

Can You Help Me Now? The Effects Of Cell Phone Use On Social Capital Formation, Simon Purdy Apr 2016

Can You Help Me Now? The Effects Of Cell Phone Use On Social Capital Formation, Simon Purdy

Research and Creative Activities Poster Day

Cell phones are the most widely spread communication technology in the modern day. Previous research into the effects of cell phone use has primarily focused on the individual-level, such as texting while driving, leaving a gap in our understanding of the technology’s effects on larger social processes. One such process that cell phones may affect is social capital, or the networks of assistance which exist in our lives, along with the associated norms of trust and reciprocity therein (Putnam, 2000). Recent trends in both social capital and the development and use of cell phones suggests that there may be negative …

Labor And Vulnerability Among Pastoralists In Northern Kenya, Bilinda Straight Apr 2014

Labor And Vulnerability Among Pastoralists In Northern Kenya, Bilinda Straight

Faculty Research and Creative Activities Award (FRACAA)

The research preliminarily examines the embodied implications of a vulnerable relationship –Samburu grandparents and their young caregivers in the context of contemporary intercommunity violence, globalization, and resource scarcity. While children are recognized caregivers of adults in numerous contexts cross-culturally, including in developed nations like the U.S. and Britain, research on this issue is scant within anthropology and recent in other fields such as geography, medicine, and public health, where it has developed primarily since the 1990s.

Community-Based Recommendations For The Kalamazoo County Elder Abuse Prevention Task Force, Janet S. Hahn, Jeana Brown Apr 2014

Community-Based Recommendations For The Kalamazoo County Elder Abuse Prevention Task Force, Janet S. Hahn, Jeana Brown

Center for Gerontology Reports and Publications

Kalamazoo County Elder Abuse Task Force,

A Western Michigan University gerontology class created a project which was composed of interviews with those who are in contact with vulnerable older adults, led by Janet S. Hahn, Ph.D. The students created a questionnaire based on occupation, knowledge and training on elder abuse, and if the professional had ever witnessed elder abuse personally without giving any identifiers.

The interviewees were recruited through the students’ personal contacts or willing participants from the Kalamazoo Area Professionals Focused on Aging organization. The interviews were geared at gaining recommendations from those in the field and also any …

"There Is No Substitute For Victory" - Remembrances Of World War Ii, Janet S. Hahn Ph.D.

Center for Gerontology Reports and Publications

From the Forward

The WMU students in the Spring 2013 Issues in Aging: Service Learning Course learned from people who lived through World War II. Over the course of the semester, students moved from discomfort when calling strangers for interviews to expressing passion for finding the best ways to share the stories and lessons learned. Students strengthened their communication and planning skills and focused on learning more about an earlier generation. Students were moved by the memories of deep sacrifices and loss. They were amazed by the frugal lifestyle required during the World War II Era, and were honored to …

Beyond The Belly: An Appraisal Of Middle Eastern Dance (Aka Belly Dance) As Leisure, Angela M. Moe Jan 2012

Beyond The Belly: An Appraisal Of Middle Eastern Dance (Aka Belly Dance) As Leisure, Angela M. Moe

Sociology Faculty Publications

Middle Eastern dance (aka belly dance) is an ancient and expressive form of movement, associated with feminine and community-based celebration and ritual. However, it is also thought of as erotic, seductive, and titillating. Despite stereotypes, belly dance appeals to contemporary women as leisure. This paper examines the intrigue with belly dance in the United States, specifically why women practice this dance form and what their involvement suggests about the gendered nature of leisure, and the need thereof, in women's lives. It also considers the possibility that belly dance may be a feminist form of leisure. Based on participant observation, journal …

When Personal Dreams Derail, Rural Cameroonian Women Aspire For Their Children, Akuri John, Susan Weinger, Barbara Barton Nov 2009

When Personal Dreams Derail, Rural Cameroonian Women Aspire For Their Children, Akuri John, Susan Weinger, Barbara Barton

Social Work Faculty Publications

Data gathered from a convenience sample of 36 women who reside in rural villages lying on the outskirts of Buea, Cameroon is not consistent with the "culture of poverty" proposition which states that personal characteristics of the poor tie them to a life of poverty. These findings run counter to an assumed "culture of poverty" in which persons do not hold career aspirations and socialize their children with attitudes that assure the generational transmission of poverty. Respondents, as a case vignette illustrates, conveyed that besides marriage they had wanted a career in order to achieve a living wage. After their …
