A New Index For Comparing The Diversity Of Population Inflows And Population Stocks, George Galster, Tatiana Homonoff

Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Research Publications

The paper introduces a new “diversification index” (DIV), which compares the composition of the current or recent population inflow and the composition of pre-existing population stock, with positive (negative) values signifying a process generating more (less) diversity in the stock. Higher absolute values for DIV signify larger differences in the composition of the inflows and the pre-existing stocks of population. The paper defines DIV, discusses its properties, and calculates it for several hypothetical cases as a way of …

The purpose of the present study was to examine the relationships among critical sport psychosocial perceptions of fathers (N=84), mothers (N=84), and daughters (N=84) in the same family (N=252). Athlete participants were young female soccer players ranging in age from 9 to 14 years. A canonical correlation analysis revealed a significant overall multivariate relationship (Wilks's λ = .485, p<.0001) and one significant function emerged (Rc = .64). The loadings suggested that athlete's perceptions of both mother and father created task involving and worry conducive climates all contributed to the multivariate relationship, predicting athlete's perceived competence, sport friendship …

Kathy led the group in a short meditation. She asked that we: “Accept ourselves in the present moment, just the way we are. Then we can experience that flame of love within us. Then we are able to extend love and blessings to others. Celebrate what makes us unique. Embrace all of it. Honor yourself. Do not judge yourself. Through awareness we will do things differently, if need be. Let go of the past. Feel your heart expanding. Let go of that which does not serve you. As you inhale, think: I accept myself completely. As you exhale, think: I …

Income Diversity Within Neighborhoods And Very Low-Income Families, George C. Galster, Jason C. Booza, Jackie M. Cutsinger

Sociology Faculty Research Publications

The past decades have witnessed increasing concern over the family ills engendered by neighborhoods inhabited overwhelmingly by families with limited resources. This study focuses on a different sort of residential context—neighborhoods with substantial income mixing—and the extent to which very low-income (VLI) families—those earning less than 50 percent of the area median income (AMI)—live in them. The study’s primary units of analysis are the 100 largest metropolitan areas in the United States, according to the 2000 Census, and the secondary units of analysis are census tracts. The study specifies six mutually exclusive income groups based on the ratios relative to …
