"So, Are We Good?" The Emerging Sensitive New Man Movement In The Boys' Club Of Stand-Up Comedy, Stephen Kohlmann Dec 2014

"So, Are We Good?" The Emerging Sensitive New Man Movement In The Boys' Club Of Stand-Up Comedy, Stephen Kohlmann

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis discusses the emerging new man comedic persona in contemporary stand-up comedy. The new man comedian eschews the hypermasculine and heteronormative traits that were common among male stand-up comedians during the boom era (1980s-1990s). The new trend of a feminized and feminist comedic persona will be analyzed through case studies of two comedians: Louis C.K. and Marc Maron. Their comedic personae transcend their on-stage comedic routines and are augmented through transmedia texts. In the case of Louis C.K., he challenges the audience's perception of his persona through his semi-autobiographical and sometimes surrealistic television series, Louie. Maron's comedic persona is …

Complex Network Analysis For Scientific Collaboration Prediction And Biological Hypothesis Generation, Qing Zhang Aug 2014

Complex Network Analysis For Scientific Collaboration Prediction And Biological Hypothesis Generation, Qing Zhang

Theses and Dissertations

With the rapid development of digitalized literature, more and more knowledge has been discovered by computational approaches. This thesis addresses the problem of link prediction in co-authorship networks and protein--protein interaction networks derived from the literature. These networks (and most other types of networks) are growing over time and we assume that a machine can learn from past link creations by examining the network status at the time of their creation. Our goal is to create a computationally efficient approach to recommend new links for a node in a network (e.g., new collaborations in co-authorship networks and new interactions in …

An Examination Of The Relationship Between Levels Of Food Security And Depression, Erica K. Svojse Aug 2014

An Examination Of The Relationship Between Levels Of Food Security And Depression, Erica K. Svojse

Theses and Dissertations

Prior research has identified a variety of common correlates between food security and depression but oftentimes the data used in these analyses are not representative of the US or do not consider multiple categorical levels of the focal variables. Using data from the 2009-2010 National Health and Nutrition Examination (NHANES), this study sought to examine the relationship between four levels of food security - full, marginal, low and very low - and depression. The findings indicate low and very low food security are significantly related to an increased risk of depression, while marginal food security is not significantly different from …

Traducción Y Subversión: Traduciendo La Voz Femenina. Una Nueva Interpretación De La Poesía Traducida De Adrienne Rich, Leticia De La Paz De Dios May 2014

Traducción Y Subversión: Traduciendo La Voz Femenina. Una Nueva Interpretación De La Poesía Traducida De Adrienne Rich, Leticia De La Paz De Dios

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis intends to prove how close politics and poetics are in Adrienne Rich's works, to the point that they often become indistinguishable. When this overlap occurs, while the author makes the intentions of her work and her language explicit within her works, essays or public speeches/declarations in English (as she defends her creation of a language for women), some of the translations of her work into Spanish find problematic to follow the intentions present in the English. This thesis explores the reasons for that and concludes that, due to some characteristics of Spanish morphology, such as genderization, the translation …

Black Lazarus: Conjure Book, Melissa Anne Morrow May 2014

Black Lazarus: Conjure Book, Melissa Anne Morrow

Theses and Dissertations

Black Lazarus: Conjure Book is a hybrid-genre collection of poems (including lyric, narrative, graphic, prose, and combinations of these four forms) uttered in the voices of fictitious personas based on the participants pictured in, the historical circumstances surrounding, and one inscribed artifact of a postcard depicting the lynching of Allen Brooks in Dallas, Texas on March 3, 1910. The theoretical scaffold for the manuscript is "triangulation," a method used by qualitative researchers to validate their studies by exploring research issues from multiple perspectives. Triangulation is also a mapmaking method used to verify the position of waypoints by measuring them against …

Globalization, Cosmopolitanism, And The New Generations: Growing Up With Global Ties, Mehdi Nejatbakhsh May 2014

Globalization, Cosmopolitanism, And The New Generations: Growing Up With Global Ties, Mehdi Nejatbakhsh

Theses and Dissertations

There is a notion that the rapid globalization of the recent decades results in more cosmopolitan outlooks among the people, specifically the new generations, around the world. Indeed, the new generations could become the agents for a generational change in that direction. Using the data from World Values Survey (WVS) along with blogs analysis and interviewing, this study asks whether or not the new generations are becoming more cosmopolitan. The results show that the new generations are more cosmopolitan in number, but more importantly, there is a qualitative difference between newer and older generations. The new generations' cosmopolitan experiences are …
