This paper explores the potential role of the Gadaa/Siqqee system of Oromo democracy in the development of a democratic multinational liberation movement of the colonized nations within the Ethiopian Empire in order to dismantle the Tigrayan-led Ethiopian terrorist government and replace it with a sovereign multinational democratic state in the Horn of Africa based on the principles of indigenous democracy. Separation of the Sudan into the Republic of Sudan (North) and the Republic of Southern Sudan (South) was globally extolled as the long-lasting solution to one of the longest civil wars in post-Colonial Africa. However, recent developments in Sudan: continued clashes between north and south, crises in the contested areas and tribal civil wars have uncovered that: separation without addressing the principal root causes of the conflicts is not the panacea to prone and protracted civil wars. Taking a historical analysis framework, the paper attempts to tackle issues of causes, opportunities and challenges for peace in Sudan.

This article tries to explain why Taiwan’s labor regime has fallen into a low wage environment. A review of literature shows that existing studies consider only the elements of state, capital, labor, or the social environment to explain the low wage within different historical stages. But the literature to date could not answer the question as for why Taiwan’s labor wage did not increase with economic growth after 2000s. In this context, floodplains are frequently susceptible to such bad practices, these areas being also exposed to stronger floods. The paper aims to calculate the potential waste taken from these areas in order to assess a quantitative impact of these bad practices.

This study aims to explore the motivations of twenty Portuguese individuals to create and maintain blogs. We interviewed ten women and ten men, who provided us with a very personal and unique vision of this type of social interaction. Results showed that the twenty Portuguese bloggers are ordinary people, who use their blog not only to keep an account of their personal lives online but also to communicate with others by sharing and expressing their opinions on a wide range of topics. While work units continue to play an important role in shaping employees’ economic rewards in urban China, the way organizational affiliations affect social stratification has undergone a subtle transformation and the distinctive boundaries among work units have been redrawn. Analysis of the data from the Chinese General Social Survey (2005) shows that the boundaries exist mainly between government agencies/public institutions and enterprises: workers in the former sector enjoyed significantly higher income as well as more fringe benefits than their counterparts in the latter sector. Why are most capitalist enterprises of any size organized as authoritarian bureaucracies rather than incorporating genuine employee participation that would give the workers real authority? Even firms with employee participation programs leave virtually all decision-making power in the hands of management. The standard answer is that hierarchy is more economically efficient than any sort of genuine participation, so that participatory firms would be less productive and lose out to more traditional competitors. Participatory development is now widely accepted in principle. In practice, however, institutional obstacles, resource constraints and perceived capacity weaknesses conspire to undermine genuine community participation in project design, implementation and evaluation. The question is no longer whether communities should participate in development initiatives, but how. In this paper I draw on recent exploratory research in Timor-Leste to discuss the potential of structured 3D model building as a tool for promoting substantive community engagement in development projects.

This phenomenon not only affected the breadwinner model which were shaped by the welfare regime, but also caused the consequence of baby bust and ageing population. This paper explores the major consequences of the expansion of the European-dominated capitalist world system, colonial terrorism, and continued subjugation for indigenous Americans, Australians, and Afri- cans between the late fifteenth and nineteenth centuries. Western powers as well as most of the descen- dants of European colonialists in Europe, the Americas, Australia, and in Africa and their regional and local collaborators deny or forget or minimize the crimes committed against indigenous peoples and claim that their ancestors spread modernity and civilization around the world.

This chapter juxtaposes interviews of advertising practitioners with scenes from the AMC drama Mad Men to suggest that the show, set in the 1960’s, helps explain how the twin specters of sexism and racism continue to haunt the industry today. While contemporary forms of discrimination may seem less explicit when compared to Mad Men, tacit rules still allow hiring on the basis "fit," familiarity, and even friendship. Civic engagement programs have become prevalent in higher education in many regions of the world. Interest in engagement has increased at a time when Caribbean countries are strengthening the regional integration movement in response to the demands of globalization. Based on a cross-national assessment, this article describes the manifestations of civic engagement in Caribbean universities and proposes an agenda for institutionalizing the practice. The civic engagement agenda is applicable to higher education institutions elsewhere.
